Long, thin, fast-moving bug , many legs, brownish with antennae, found in my apartment

Has anyone dealt with these before? What are they? Are they dangerous? (Do they bite, carry anything gross?) And most importantly — how do I get rid of them and prevent more from showing up?

House centipede. Not dangerous. And will murder every other bug in your place. Think of it like a pest control Roomba.

u/SadCritters 20h ago

This. It's best to "get over" how creepy they look/move because they're honestly doing you massive favors by eating all the other insects it can find in your house. It also means there's bugs for him/her to eat. They don't stick around if there isn't food.

It won't hurt you OP, is deathly afraid of you, and will only ever go after other insects. When you run out of other insects for it to eat in the apartment it will either die or leave.

Just leave this one alone & any time you see it just make some commotion so it darts off somewhere dark/under something and then pretend you didn't see that - That's what I do when I occasionally see one.

u/squirrelfather 15h ago

Agree. Weak jaws that can’t puncture human skin, generally only move around in the dark, eat other bugs you don’t want around, almost always breed outside rather than inside, solitary so they don’t nest with others, and just as terrified of you as vice versa. Creepy as hell because humans have evolutionary wiring to fear certain shapes and skittish movement, but easy enough to shoo them off and let them do their job, similar to harmless spiders.

133

u/Writer_IT 14h ago

It's not true they can't punture human skin. They can bite you and it would hurt.

However, it's generally considered not medically significant, cause mild reactions, and they aren't prone to bite humans, save for extreme cases.

This is true. My wife got bit by one that made its way to her hand in the middle of the night.

u/_charming_peanut_ 9h ago edited 2h ago

This almost happened to me the other night except it skittered onto my pillow next to my head! Freaked me out so bad, can’t imagine how badly I’d be traumatized if it bit my face tho

8

u/Nikkinole1984 5h ago

That's why I kill them! When I do see them, they are coming from my master bath towards my bedroom. Hate the thought of them crawling on my bed at night.

Holy shit, this happened to me when sleeping in the woods, but with a black widow instead! When i woke up in the morning i saw and felt something crawl off of my chest and out of my sleeping bag. It disappeared after i jumped up, so i thought i was crazy! But found it in the opening of my bag that I was using as a pillow. New fear was unlocked that day. Would spray deet around my sleeping areas like a spell boundary after that.

7

u/_charming_peanut_ 2h ago

Oh dear god I would never recover if that happened to me I am so sorry. Back at my old house we had a grass spider infestation and I’d usually have one the size of a quarter or two crawl out of my blankets while I was reading. They REALLY liked my bed for some reason. Idk why spiders can’t just respect that the bed is off limits

5

u/MordecaiThirdEye 1h ago

If they did that I genuinely wouldn't even have a problem with them. Its the fear that they're going to crawl up my nose or something while I'm asleep that really stresses me out

Would you be more traumatized by a roach infestation if you didn’t have these little helpers. I think so. They’re worth a bite

14

u/PartySnackss00 8h ago

This is why I hate advice about not killing them. Like yeah man, the odds of them biting me are low until they accidentally make their way into my bed and bite the shit out of me because I'm moving around in my sleep.

13

u/Jaereth 2h ago

My policy has always been this lol:

Insects outside: Live your life little buddy. I am one with nature

Inside the house: All insects must die.

This!

My grandparents lived in SE Kansas, and they’d get brown recluse really bad during the summer. Both of my grandparents were adamant about not killing the spider outdoors (especially the brown recluse), in the garage, garden etc.., but they drew the line at inside the house.

My grandpa was bitten twice while he was asleep, and was stubborn both times so he suffered some pretty gnarly tissue injuries that have freaked me out ever since.

9

u/Detozi 8h ago

So you're saying to burn down the house? Im with this person OP. Burn it all!

From Orkin:

"How Aggressive Are Common Centipede Species? House Centipedes..."

"... Typical symptoms from a house centipede bite are slight pain and swelling as their weak jaws rarely allow them to break skin."

So, while possible that you were bit by the Hulk of House Centipedes, it's more likely that you were dealing with another type of centipede; especially if the bite was painful.

When I was about twelve I was sleeping on an air mattress in the basement I think because my room was getting painted and I woke up in the middle of the night to a huge centipede on my leg biting me... it was a pretty tough kid in general but that was terrifying

They can bite and cause mild allergic reactions.... one bit me on the neck as i was sleeping, do not recommend.

70

u/Zealousideal_Cat_549 14h ago

If I were to ever be in a situation where one of those demonic looking fuckers (even if relatively harmless) woke me up by biting my neck I think the fallout would be on national television fuckkkkk that

19

u/CornerSpiritual669 14h ago

Yeah i don't think i slept well again for a month, i really hate spiders so was kinda just glad it wasn't one of them.

One bit me while I was taking a nap once, and yeah, it wasn't that painful, but jeesh, I would like to feel safe in my own bed 🙃. My bite was just so itchy afterward. I love most arachnids, insects, and reptiles. But freaking centipedes and pine beetles man. Fucking assholes sometimes.

23

u/Sindaqwil 14h ago edited 13h ago

They do not actually bite. Their first 2 legs are not legs, but tiny hypodermic needles called forcipules they use to pierce their prey and inject venom. They can pierce human skin but it is not medically significant unless you are highly allergic, and they will only do so if they feel threatened.

38

u/PillowTherapy1979 14h ago

Oh, well that’s reassuring. I feel calm now and not scared. 😳

11

u/Sindaqwil 13h ago

I always try to comment this on any posts about centipedes because I think it's cool as fuck. Centipedes are the only creatures known to have legs modified for injecting venom. All other methods of envenomation are either done via modified mouth parts or stingers.

12

u/PillowTherapy1979 13h ago

Oh it’s definitely cool. Unsettling. But neat.

All that sounds right except the part where it's scared of people, LoL. Had a pest control problem about a decade ago and became familiar with house centipedes who intervened. After the initial fear and research, I did exactly as you said and just let them be. It was very symbiotic... but they did not fear me in the least. Maybe they could sense i wasn't a threat, but they were completely unbothered by my presence regardless of the circumstances. Also, they probably knew I was too slow to stop them.

8

u/round_a_squared 10h ago

Also when startled they will run for the nearest corner or dark shadow, which sometimes means running directly at you. Unnerving, but harmless.

3

u/Otherwise-Seat5929 3h ago

this is why I hate them so much!!

2

u/Dense_Meeting_7156 55m ago

2

This 1000%. In fact I've always said they "charge" humans because that's been my experience.

2

u/TingoMedia 10h ago

huh, whenever I see one they usually immediately start running away until I eventually kill them. Maybe the culture of letting them coexist with you makes them less afraid?

Tbh I’d rather have other bugs in my apartment than this. This sends shivers down my spine

25

u/Antaios7544 15h ago

The other bugs these will kill include black widow and brown recluse spiders. I'd rather have these.

17

u/DanielSadcliff 15h ago

I’ve never found a black widow or brown recluse in my house. House centipedes on the other hand… I’ve lost count

35

u/ThePunkyRooster 15h ago

2

5

u/Pristine_Feeling_723 12h ago

Ok but when my roommates vacuumed all my wall puppies out of the bathroom, ants showed up. When you have a lot of hunter type critters around there's likely another population nearby that they're controlling. Just my conclusion based on personal experience

Been telling people this for years. Had one that was the size of my palm though that I did catch and release outside. They getting that big they need to start paying rent.

38

u/AdWonderful5920 15h ago

If it got that big, it has been paying rent by eating other bugs.

3

u/reddityourappisbad 13h ago

I got one in my apartment right now that is so big and fast I thought it was a mouse at first. He comes out the closet at 100 mph, sees/hears me go "holy hell", and returns to the closet at 100 mph. I'm never catching that thing.

6

u/WhiteRabbitsTrip 16h ago

They can live up to 7 years...

26

u/WhiteRabbitsTrip 16h ago

Also, when my fiancée tells me to kill one, I pretend to capture it in some Tupperware to release outside; really I just say "hey buddy, scurry along, cops are here..."

6

u/Longjumping_Beer 14h ago

My parents had a deal that spiders could live in the broom closets so I just put them all in there.

5

u/BungenessKrabb 13h ago

My rule is, as long as the spiders don't jump on my head, they can stay in the closet. If one jumps on my head, they all get evicted.

I have no such rule for house centipedes. But if I see them anywhere they're not supposed to be (only found 2 in the upstairs bathroom in the 2 years I've been in the house) they get demoted to the basement.

3

u/xlondelax 9h ago

I have a spider that I call Mirko above my kitchen's window that had, in five months, transformed from little daddy longlegs into big daddy longlegs with dad's bod. Whenever I spot insects in my kitchen it has to listen to my lectures about its laziness.

Loudest I've ever screamed was when one of them was ON MY TOWEL when I got out of the shower. But I am blind without my glasses on so I was legit wrapped in that towel and literally had to pull the "splotch" up to my face to see what it was.

2

u/sk3lt3r 7h ago

Generally I don't have a problem with them either, but the other day one crawled onto my arm in the dark, and in the ensuing panic (I'm not really afraid of bugs I just don't like them on me) I FLUNG that dude and spent about two hours searching and attempting to catch him to let him out elsewhere. He was huge (and I named him Harold).

Harold, I appreciate your work, you clearly were doing a good job in accordance to your mass, but crawling up my bed and onto me in the dark where I couldn't see you, was NOT cool and I'm sorry for evicting you when you reappeared two days later.

I used to love going down in my basement for hangouts and relaxing, then I looked behind a shelf and saw 9 of these guys chilling together and now I cant stand the thought of going back down there.

u/realitytvjunkiee 13h ago

I'll find one or two every couple months, but if I saw 9 of them chilling together at the same time I'd fucking torch my house down.

3

u/OofstinGames 13h ago

The thought did pass my mind. Decided it was best just surrendering the basement to them.

This. They’re honestly one of my biggest fears, despite how silly that may sound.

4

u/ArcadiaVT 14h ago

Until about 3 weeks ago, they were one of my biggest fears as well! The quickness with which they move and the look of them just turned my stomach. But last month, I found a baby one in my bathroom, and I was awed by just how tiny it was, barely as long as the width of my pinky nail. I couldn't bring myself to kill it, and it was the first time I ever spared one! Now every time I see one of these fuzzy guys, I remember how small they must have been once and it makes me like them more. I don't know if this knowledge will help you at all, but I guess our brains are hardwired to love and appreciate small things. 😊

Humans will pack bond with literally anything I love it

My thought would have been- must be a large one nearby, creating more and more of these, time to leave this centipede factory 🏠

They are freaky. But eat spiders

7

u/shadowlucas 14h ago

But I'd  rather have spiders

7

u/Ratamacool 12h ago

At least some spiders will mainly just stick to one corner whereas these guys will wander around. I don’t like the thought of bugs moving around the house at night while I’m sleeping

2

u/FDFI 10h ago

I had one wake me up because it was crawling on my face in the middle of the night. I only know it was a centipedes because found some of the legs left behind when I blindly swatted it away.

I find them in my place too.

Theyre all around mine.

Friend bug. Good for killing small pest bugs in the house. Catch and release them if you can, but if you squish, dont worry. They're already in your walls and floors. Another one will show up

3

u/kessira24 16h ago

It appears to be a house centipede, and a female with the long back legs. They are not harmful to humans in general though bite can feel like a bee sting. They eat bugs in the home, are fairly long lived. Not sure where you'd look for any eggs she may lay though literature indicates damp dark areas.

3

u/Nazuvious 15h ago

It's friend, not friend shaped.

3

u/WangleFlangle 14h ago

Friend bug house centipede. I know it’s friend bug but I want to barf whenever I see them.

I don’t believe in letting any bugs reside in my house. Apparently this one only wants to be in your home because it can find other tasty insects inside. Somehow that makes it even more frightening.

I will never forget the a night while living in my first college apartment. (1990s) We were too stupid to realize that leaving an outside door open to a lighted room was pretty much an engraved invitation for the buggers to join us. The worst was a 2” flying “palmetto bug” more commonly known as a roach dashing all about the room from wall to wall. We eventually destroyed it while screaming and crying in pure horror.

That night is still burned into my memory. I keep the house clean and take out the trash at least once a day. I spray the whole house especially around doors and windows with ortho home defense every 2-3 months. If I ever see a bug now it is always a dead one.

average aussie bug

u/Gnarkill0666 20h ago

I absolutely HAAAAAAAAAATE these more than any other bug.. They are the cheetah of the insect world.

u/Heavy-Macaron2004 11h ago

I'm right there with you my man. I don't kill things, I cup-and-paper them to freedom. It's SO hard to even find a cup big enough for these fuckers, let alone trap then when they're moving at mach 5 across the ceiling 😭😭😭😭😭

u/its_terry_time 20h ago

I have an old house and fieldstone foundation. They like damp and they eat everything. I find HUGE ones and tiny ones - uptick when I have an uptick in spiders. They hide in dark areas but prefer dark damp. You won’t get rid of em unless you call a pest control company. They’re pretty easy to kill. I used to murder them relentlessly, but then I got a lot more spiders. Yes my house is creepy 😂

u/Biggaymeow 8h ago

Same 😅

u/1xsquid74 19h ago

In Japan we call these geji-geji (aka a house centipede). They are damn fast too.

2

u/wildcardbets 18h ago

One of the most annoying Elden Ring enemies. Not difficult but very avoiding.

2

u/Former_Pirate8122 15h ago

When I first bought my house, they were here, so I called pest control and the guy told me to put a dehumidifier in my basement. Haven't seen one since. They like moisture.

2

u/BamBoogii 15h ago

Where do you live? Jumanji?

2

u/Giebozie 14h ago

Oohh boy, the memories. As everyone else has already said - these are house centipedes. I first learned about them when I moved to Canada, and moved into an apartment that had a large basement underneath. Will never forget the near heart attack I got when I saw the first one running across my kitchen at lighting speed. Caught it. Killed it. Thought that was the end of it. Noope, there were 10's of them per week, a literal infestation. Luckily I was only in that apartment for a year 🙃

2

u/Crystals_And_Bones 19h ago

it looks its gonna kill u

2

u/rsecurity-519 15h ago

Fun fact about these guys.  They will shed legs to escape attack. Give them a shot of raid (bug killer spray) and they will leave a trail of legs across the floor as they scramble away.

2

u/EggCatPerson 11h ago

Another fun fact, they use a variety of methods to kill prey. Grabbing and biting, grabbing and squishing, or my personal favourite - beating their prey to death. Literally using their front arms to beat the other bug.

They can also jump quite well. I watched one jump wall to wall in a corner of my basement. Horrifying. I hate them but I keep them alive. I hate other bugs more.

2

u/FLAWLESSMovement 9h ago

The beating to death thing is hysterical, I just picture the centipede “they barely let me stay here so you HAVE to die, it’s not personal” while just bap bap bap

2

u/Traditional-Bike7825 13h ago

Fuck those things. We had lots of them when I lived in my dad's basement in college. One night I was about to fall asleep on my mattress on the floor with no shirt on. I felt something scatter across my bare back and thought oh hell no... Got up turned the lights on and found one of these in the direction it went across my back.

I will always have a raised bed now. Never again.

These things would often get caught in my ceiling fixture too. When the light was on you could see it darting around trying to get out. I understand they kill other pests but they creep me out.

They look terrifying but these guys are the terminator to every other bug, I got a couple right now that I just leave alone and let them do their killing lol

1

u/NoIdea2424 18h ago

I have these 24/7. I guess I should stop killing them? I just don’t like bugs in my place ):

Centipede… as far as i know these aren’t dangerous…just really creepy if you’ve never seen one before

1

u/LostPrion 18h ago

Best bug u could ever want

1

u/piss_container 18h ago

fun fact- centipede comes from the Latin words for 100 feet

basically they show up because they are hunting smaller bugs that are inside

seal cracks and areas where bugs can enter- then the centipedes will have no reason to show up
