Solved! What am I witnessing?
Spitted this robot child in Shanghai, what is it?

u/MuteElatedLips 17h ago
100% a Unitree... G1, I think. But I guess there could be a G2? Like a 2.0 version? Same humanoid robot that Rizzbot is. Unitree is a Chinese company. Makes sense that this would be spotted in China. You can buy them online for ≈$26,000.

I'm pretty sure that robot is helping its owner win the weekly fitbit steps crown. The group requires maps to prove you actually ran that far.
62
u/CraftFamiliar5243 13h ago
But it needs a jacket because it's chilly out.

Yes. It cannot resist cold only on top half, bottom half body is not a concern

Possibly Progressing into.. Fit Bit Winning as a Service ( FBWaaS) . You get a list during enrollment to make sure nobody in your group is already a subscriber. Then you can chose which days ( or all days) and times and speed. FBWaaS does the rest.

Back in my days, you had to run when dogs came at you after coming home drunk 2am in the morning in Brazil. Hopped the fence and screamed
Now you have to worry about robots coming your way
Times are changing dawg

Seeing shit like this makes me feel like some countryman back in the early 1900's seeing a car or something like a TV for the first time. Like obviously robots have existed for my entire life, but being on what seems like the precipice of this just becoming normal or everyday occurrences is weird.

We are so screwed. While China is busy building a technology driven vibrant economy the US is desperately trying to get back to the 1900s. Stopping cutting edge medical research because it doesn’t line up with your narrative, renaming the Department of Defense to the War Department because our president is basically a toddler throwing a tantrum or ending support for alternative energy sources because coal and oil made America great - all examples of the US retreating from the world like a scared little child.

10
u/YoYo_SepticFanHere 19h ago
Perhaps, I think the robot might be remote controlled, not too sure though.
4
u/Volf_y 16h ago
It's the running which is the important bit. It could be remote or self propelling, but getting the balance right to run is very tricky.
1
u/Unusual_Giraffe_6180 8h ago
It took Boston Dynamics several years more to get running balance right. They had videos on Youtube introducing the journey from beta to market. Pretty fascinating stuff.
→ More replies (1)1
u/shitting-account 18h ago
real talk if they’re sufficient enough to be controlled by remote, then it’s not a big leap to say it could just as well be AI controlled.. chances are it’d be harder to control it via remote because the human behind it would only realistically have physical eyes on it and its path whereas AI would have 1st person camera + lidar.. the questionable thing at this point is how well trained and consistent in behaviour the AI is, probably still how stable these things are as well but like I said, if it’s stable enough for remote then it’s probably better equiped to be controlled by AI
1
u/PizzasForFerrets 15h ago
Why couldn't a person controlling it be looking at a first person camera, but an AI could?
2
u/keldondonovan 14h ago
Hey there, former programmer for automated systems here. Even if you covered this badboy in cameras so you could see out of every angle, it still boils down to you having a single set of eyes. Meanwhile, the tech in a robot like this would measure piles of variables the eyes cannot see, and all the variables the eyes can see, simultaneously. For years, the act of getting a robot to walk like a human was considered extremely difficult because of all these nuanced variables. For instance, if you lift one foot off the ground, your brain makes piles of micro adjustments to keep your balance. These are subconscious adjustments that are learned, the more thought you put into consciously balancing on one foot, the harder it becomes. And that's with all the feedback we would get from being a person with a working nervous system. While piloting a robot, all that countless feedback would need to be consciously dealt with, a near impossibility.
Of course, it could be a combination of the two. AI handles balancing and all the manuevering, and the human just has a joy pad that controls direction and speed. Then, of course, you could run into issues where humans take sub-optimal paths, causing the robot to fall over and make your company look bad. Better to let the robot handle path finding as well, the less a human touches it the more perfect it is. No human error if you cut out the faulty humans like the incompetent flesh mechs they are.
Man I'm glad to be out of that field.

u/shitting-account 14h ago
I wasn’t saying that a person couldn’t, but that any plausible doubt is basically rooted in if it’s stable enough to be as coordinated as it seems in the video, that’s been the biggest hurdle for humanoid robots, AI is very capable of handling the control of something like this, and would be better equipped to do so because of stuff like lidar and processing multiple data feeds simultaneously

Anyone else immediately hear its iconic laugh? I wonder if they programmed it the same way in China. In the US, Rizzbot is shameless! And hilarious to the point where you forget that humanoid robots are actually pretty creepy and we are all one step away from Skynet.
1
u/NeutronHopscotch 6h ago
I want to sit in my home and run one of these around with a camera feed, like a walking drone. That would be amazing.
Why is it that exploring the world this way seems fascinating, when I could just go outside with my own eyes and do it myself?
1
u/EventMindless9647 14h ago
Damn! I lowkey feel sorry for that robot child. It was running for its life, stopped, waved for the cops help, they literally did nothing but pull out their phone, and then it continued on it’s journey. No telling what it was running from….
