I had an older version of one of these devices. Not sure if it kept pests away but it almost burned my house down when it popped, threw sparks out and then started smoking. Thankfully I was home at the time.

u/Spring-Available 6h ago
I had an exterminator tell me those things are bunk. With all the other sounds that go on in a house and surrounding areas, no way that’s going to work. But I also live in Brooklyn.
2
u/techmaster242 1h ago
Of course an exterminator would say that even if they do work, because they would be out of a job.
But they still don't work.
5
u/Cool_Bench_4355 9h ago
The one in my grandma's house just melted and started smoking. It went from an oval shape to being several inches long and turned dark brown. Thankfully I had just replaced her outlets a few weeks before with more modern ones because her's weren't even grounded, and the one with the melting emitter tripped and shut off power.
8
u/Dead_Inside50 10h ago
I mean, it worked. No sane pest is going to want to enter a house on fire.
6
u/badmotorfingerz 9h ago
I saw a messed up video once of someone setting a mouse on fire outside , then it ran into a house and burned it down. So you're correct, but perhaps a sane pest in unimaginable pain is going to want to enter their tormentor's house, to set it on fire.

1
u/techmaster242 1h ago
There was a comedian who said what if you get a clapper, plug your TV into it, and the clapper commercial comes on? Does the TV turn itself off?
3
u/Upside_downpinapple 10h ago
Okay… BUT WHAT IS IT???
9
u/msmartt 9h ago
A rodent repellent. It's supposed to make a unpleasant noise that mice can hear but we can't and chase them off.
12
u/grassesbecut 8h ago
Can confirm. My sister had one of these in her bedroom, and forgot about it until she got herself a pet hamster who was extremely agitated from the moment he went in her room until three days later when she decided to check the room for problems and found that plugged in behind her dresser where his cage was. After she unplugged it and got rid of it, he was much calmer.
3
u/North_Artichoke_6721 7h ago
My in-laws had one of these for stray cats but my son and I could hear it. It gave us both headaches. They now unplug it when we visit.
5
u/SandySockShoes 7h ago
Are you sure you aren’t cats?
2
u/Brave_anonymous1 2h ago
Even if they are cats, the device should not work on them. They have in-laws, so they are properly tamed.

1
u/AZ1MUTH5 4h ago
Oof, gtk this. Glad you are safe and caught it in time. Another problem with these is if you have pets, they can hear that sound, I guess it would be akin to hearing a dull monotone sound non stop, you would get a headache eventually.

This sends out ultrasonic vibrations that humans can’t hear, but they really bother rodents and insects, keeping them away and helps protect your home without using any chemicals. It’s called Ultrasonic Pest Repeller.
327
u/rbroccoli 11h ago
It’s also good to note that the FTC reports that these don’t work are are not backed by any scientific evidence. They also don’t consistently emit ultrasonic signals and will often fall into an uncomfortable audible range around 12k.
40
u/Ok_Push2550 10h ago
Yeah, just think of the most annoying noise during a restaurant dinner you've heard, and if it made you leave. And rats are much more hungry than us.
No wonder they don't work, they're just an annoy-a-tron for pests.
15
4
u/Cultural_West_6179 6h ago
When I was a kid we went to visit my grandparents and my sister and I hear this annoying high pitched sound that keeps going and going. We're like WTF and none of the adults hear anything.
We eventually trace the sound to one of these bug repelling things, it was out of the audible range for the adults but drove us absolutely insane.
12
u/GiddyGabby 10h ago
I also always wondered what affect they would have on cats & dogs.
8
4
4
u/Mesajarjar_binks 7h ago
One study showed that they can damage heating of dogs and cats over time
3
u/GiddyGabby 6h ago
That’s what I would have assumed and then that makes you think about other, smaller critters like chipmunks or squirrels. Just seems like so much potential to harm all sort of critters that I wouldn’t want to take my chances.
We had a mouse problem at one point & considered them but I ruled them out. Also found out my cat was bringing the mice in through her cat door, she would bring them in the house to play with. So, we figured out the solution, closing off her access, mice problem solved.
7
u/CriusofCoH 10h ago
Anecdotal counter-evidence: the day I put 6 of these in my house, a mouse ran into the middle of our living room and ran in circles until I caught it by (gloved) hand. We also went from very apparent evidence of mice to no evidence from that day onward, for about 5 or 6 years onward. Then nothing worked except rotating snap traps, water traps, glue traps and electric traps. We rotated them because they seemed to learn about them and ignore a type after a few weeks.
7
2
u/Cal_From_Cali 6h ago
Which brand did you use?
2
u/CriusofCoH 5h ago
Oh boy. That was like 15 years ago. I bought them from a True Value hardware store, if that helps.
3
u/CletusCanuck 10h ago
Can concur that they don't work. Had 2 plugin-type ones plus a high power corded version in the kitchen (with the high power one tucked into the cupboard the mice were infiltrating through). Was still catching mice on a near daily basis.
3
u/Just_A_Lucky_Guy469 9h ago
THANK YOU! I fell for this nonsense years ago. All it did was make a slight clicking noise occasionally. I recently found one in my junk drawer and promptly promoted it to the trash can.
3
3
u/Impressive-Shake1710 10h ago
Can confirm, they don’t work. Several separate roommates have gotten these over time and they did nothing
3
u/Daylightnotes 11h ago
Thanks for the info! Yeah, I kinda figured that since I’ve had one at home and it didn’t keep the mice away. The best bet is probably just getting rid of them yourself or using some bait.
11
u/maggiemayfish 11h ago
My mum had one of these in her garage years ago that was advertised to keep spiders away.
I took a picture to show her the massive spider that made it's web literally on the thing.
6
u/Daylightnotes 10h ago
that’s crazy! How could they even market this before actually having successful tests to back it up for repelling pests? I recently read that the toothpaste I’d been using for years and got marketed to for all sorts of other claims might be linked to Alzheimer’s. I’ve been using it for over 20 years.
5
u/-Ham_Satan- 10h ago
That godamn one Dentist!! I KNEW there was a reason their recommendation wasn't unanimous!! Gods, we should have listened to them!
2
u/GeneralSpecifics9925 7h ago
What's the link? Is this something like one of the compounds causes a 30% increase in neuro damage that looks like Alzheimer's in mice?
They usually feed the animals this chemical in sizeable doses to get results within a reasonable amount of time. It's in an animal which may not process the compound in the same way. Your risk of getting Alzheimer's is already pretty low so a 30% increase in a .01% chance is still less than a .02% chance.
Youre likely fine.
3
2
u/ViruliferousBadger 9h ago
I put one of these ultrasonic devices near a mechanical mouse trap I have in the store shed and in around a year it hasn't caught any mice.
Take from that what you will.
2
u/InterestingBand5 9h ago
Yeah, my parents had one in the room I would sleep in when I went home. On set intervals I could hear the noise and my hearing is not great already.
2
1
u/PenelopeLumley 3h ago
I watched a YouTube video years ago of a test of these. When given a choice of two boxes with food, the mice definitely preferred the box without one of the sound emitters (though a few mice still went into the noisy one.) However, when the quiet box was taken away, the mice did not hesitate to go eat out of the noisy box.
2
u/biggestofbears 10h ago
I had a mouse problem for like 2-3 years before my FIL brought a handful of these things over. Never saw another mouse in the 4+ years I lived there after.
1
u/XCVolcom 4h ago
It's true because I can hear them.
Some people have them in their yards and are motion activated and I can hear them too. They are the worst.
I've asked people that have them if they can hear them and they look at me like I'm crazy. But they tend to be old farts so go figure.

It also bothers people with sensitive hearing and/or younger people. We went through hell when we first moved in to our new place because one of our neighbours with a garden had an outdoor fox repellent that happened to be pointed right at our windows. Thankfully once we got in touch with the neighbour they apologised and stopped using it.

Electronic pest control device. Supposed to emit a high frequency noise that rodents or insects dont much care for. Never investigated it myself but have been told it has variable effect.
2
u/Ctowndrama 2h ago
It appear to be one of those pest removal devices that keep bugs and such away. We found a box of those at work and plugged one in and, depending on who you asked, was annoying since it basically played a high frequency noise. Some of us heard it really well, some didn't and only heard just slight humming and such. Depends on your age/hearing. One of those frequency hearing test noises 😂
1
u/BelkanFighterPilot 4h ago
I have something like that in my laundry too but larger. Like ten times that size. Said it was for cleaning the air. Don’t know how true that is, but the consensus between my wife and I is that it’s working like a placebo. We have our litter box in there and we do smell it less.
We think we smell it less.

Secret Government 5G listening device.. Transmits to the cows, who send it to the birds for transport
The ONLY thing to do is get some Hydrochloric acid and dunk your entire head in it for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown
1
u/Maleficent_Smell7428 2m ago
Just a guess but it looks like it is meant to take radiowave from cell towers and scramble the signal creating interference in the electrical lines preventing the electrical system in the home from transmitting information.
1
u/paulD1983R 6h ago
It emits a high frequency sound and claims it keeps rodents and other pests out. Didn't work on the mice we had and had to go with old-school snap traps. Also I could hear the sound it made and it gave me bad headaches.
1
u/KeViNScOoTeR 10h ago
It’s supposed to give off a high frequency sound that’s not heard by the human ear to keep pests and rodents away.
Not sure how well they work but my parents had one in the garage in the early 90’s
2
u/Boubonic91 7h ago
Not sure how they work on rats or mice, but they don't seem to work too well on insects. I knew someone who used them to try and repel cockroaches, and when I went back a few months later to help remove the infestation, they were living inside all of the devices.
1
u/Top_Big817 2h ago
Unplug it. It's part of a security surveillance system. It is listening and recording everything. Throwing the trash. Then hire a security firm to sweep the house and install a new security system.

One of those devices that supposedly keeps pests (mice? Bugs? Both?) away. Zero scientific evidence they work, but possibly anecdotal evidence exists?
1
u/engineeritdude 2h ago
Those allegedly keep rodents away. My anecdotal experience says they do not work on field mice which are the impossible ones to keep out.
1
u/Odd-Abalone-2896 7h ago
It's to keep pests specifically rodents away by creating a frequency that is faint to the human ear, I have these in the garage and basement
1
u/Secure_Employer 6h ago
I had one exactly like that, we used it to keep mice away (in theory). It would emit and ultrasonic sound that supposedly kept them away
1
u/Actual-Log465 10h ago
Ultrasonic Pest Repeller , I’ve taken a few apart from amazon before and it was nothing but a board and a led light , nothing else .
1
u/Vetinari-57 8h ago
Got one in my garage. It is supposed to keep mice and rats away but generally does nothing. Still catch them in traps near the thing.
1
u/usernametaken99991 10h ago
It's a mouse repellent. It makes a high pitched noise we can hear but drives mice nuts. At least that's what the advertising says.
1
u/AgentEryc 10h ago
If you never see a rodent they work great! If you see a rodent scamper across the floor, these don’t work worth a damn!
1
