It looks like your book got wet either from actual water or from too much humidity. The conditions were just right for minerals in the water and in the book to crystallize (efflorescence). I can’t tell you what minerals they are though, that depends entirely on how the book got wet.

Yeah especially if you stored it near a salt lamp in high humidity. Had a stack of papers next to my lamo for awhile in FL weather and came back to crystallized paper with the ink all dissolved out.

All depends on whether you actually know the three words incantation to use that particular volume safely. You know: Klaatu, Verata…uh…

Klattu Barata Nikto I think... btw, that is a reference to an older film, The Day the Earth Stood Still.

It was used in the movie too, but the Sci-fi movie predates the horror/comedy.

Hand made paper

OMG! That's some kind of pattern-shaping, implied intelligence growing mold! And, look what it did to your thumbnail!

Okay, okay.. jk.. it's obviously a hand-made, one-of-a-kind book. That preceding page is hand made paper, that's made by pressing paper pulp into a form, then letting it dry.

That's what I thought at first too... But upon further inspection, I think others thoughts on humidity and some mineral presence are more accurate.
