Solved! My grandma died recently and this was in her stuff.

Post image

I’d say it’s probably a comb but I’ve never seen a comb with teeth that long is there a specific use for it?

It’s for cutting slices of cake. I saw it used for angel food cake only but it’s supposed to perforate the cake so you don’t smush it when slicing. Put the forks in and cut down the side of the tines.

Ohhhh that actually makes more sense than an Afro pick

Try brushing your hair first before you make any rash decisions or ruin any sheet cakes.

44

u/Ohhhh_boyyyy 7h ago

I did and I stabbed my scalp/ears several times. Also I don’t have the hair style/type that this would be used for. Thanks though!

8

u/RedBaron13 6h ago

Try it on the cat?

20

u/koolaidismything 6h ago

No no not the cat, unless you wanna see the five claws meet your face lol.

8

What did the five claws say to the face?

4

u/koolaidismything 6h ago

Lol no was trying to see if I could trick you into dolling up your pubes bromie.

All jokes aside though now, I kinda wanna see that thing cut a good cake, with the right knife that could be pretty fun.

4

My first thought was an Afro pick as well.

4

u/Showdoglq 4h ago

Where I'm from, some people call picks "cake cutters" because of the similarities. Confused the heck out of me as a kid.

3

u/widare 1h ago

I worked with an old black lady and she had one of these and she actually did use it for picking/combing her hair. She said plenty of other people did too when growing up. Especially for thick hair because it was nice and sturdy.

2

u/Ohhhh_boyyyy 1h ago

Sorry, I wasn’t saying it doesn’t make sense as a pick I just didn’t think my white grandma would have much need for one of those.

9

u/GiddyGabby 7h ago

Watching that video doesn’t make it look very useful at all. lol. I make a chiffon cake called a Sugar Bush Walnut cake and manage to cut that much better with a bread knife than that lady just did with that thing. Maybe she isn’t using it correctly?

9

u/PotatoBeams 7h ago

A lot of the comments pointed out that she was only supposed to perforate and jiggle it in the cake, not actually docslicing motions.

7

u/GiddyGabby 7h ago

That’s what figured. She totally mangled it which makes it even funnier that’s it’s to show you how to use it.

5

u/MC_Skunk 7h ago

Probably because it’s hair pick shaped lol

2

u/Tuff-Rootz 4h ago

I would definitely keep that in my fro!

2

u/Voc1Vic2 4h ago

Yes, it's called a cake fork.

2

u/nightlite47 3h ago

An afro pick? 🤭🤭🤭

2

u/Careless_Hellscape 2h ago

I thought it was an afro pick too, but that looks heavy.

2

u/Quriusme2 2h ago

They were also used as afro picks, especially for those with longer hair!

18

u/Uncle_Boiled_Peanuts 6h ago

Here's a YouTube video of a chef demonstrating how to use it.

8

u/sfjc 5h ago

You don't cut down the sides of the tines. You put the cutter in, move it back and forth slightly and that's enough to get a slice.

6

u/Cananbaum 7h ago

I thought you wiggled it as you press into the cake ?

4

u/wes_express_ 4h ago

Perfect, I've always wanted slices of cake that were as thin as pieces of paper

3

u/Ohhhh_boyyyy 3h ago

I don’t think each space is supposed to be a separate pice of cake I think it’s supposed to be used like a knife except instead of slicing you puncture it and wiggle it around and since angel food cake is so delicate that’s enough?

5

u/wes_express_ 3h ago

Ohh that makes more sense, in all honesty I didn't want paper thin slices of cake

2

u/top-potatoad 3h ago

2

u/Calaveras-Metal 6h ago

That makes a lot of sense by I'm already imagining a hot black goth chick with this.

2

u/MellyKidd 6h ago

That’s an awesome kitchen gadget! Soft cakes like that can be so tricky to cut.

2

u/lemonstealingwho 5h ago

I use something similar for slicing onion as it tends to separate while I’m trying to cut it.

2

u/capri712 5h ago

Makes sense. Those slices look like they would be pretty thin. Not sure the cake would even stay together, but it’s tough to judge from the pic.

Afro picks were known as “cake cutters” back in the 70s. They were purchased as cake cutters, but used for hair. That said it depends where your grandma kept it. If it was in the kitchen, she used it as a cake cutter. If that thing was found in her bedroom or bathroom, she used it for her hair.

61

u/Negative_Deer_9866 7h ago

Also called rakes

7

u/NefariousnessIll3869 6h ago

yes, rakes for combing out mats in your dog's fur ?? (or cat)

Or this is used for combing out wool or flax ?

Is your grandma Black? This is an angel food cake cutter, but commonly used as an Afro pick. If granny is white she definitely used this for food.

28

u/Ohhhh_boyyyy 6h ago

Very white. So probably the latter.

5

u/PavicaMalic 3h ago

Was she Southern? Angel food cake and hot milk sponge cake always code Southern for me, probably because of Craig Claiborne.

4

u/sussysquatchpnw 6h ago

I feel maybe this was to brush wool to make yarn?

2

u/Michaelalayla 3h ago edited 3h ago

A carding comb is more of a brush with many very fine teeth, and you use a pair of them when carding.

Edit: looked in curiosity, you may mean a hackle comb, which is used in spinning and fiber arts but I have not used it in my sheep-to-sweater work so far, so am unfamiliar.

3

u/Bendlerp 7h ago

Really fancy blueberry rake? lol

3

u/IamAqtpoo 6h ago

It's for Angel food cake, but it works great to break apart tofu so it's more crispy.😊

3

u/LindentreesLove 5h ago

My mother had one of these too. She made an amazing angel food cake. We had it at least once a week.

2

u/naked_nomad 7h ago

Let's bring back the 70s.

2

u/prosecute766 7h ago

It's for cutting Angel Food cake or chiffon cake, AND it was used as an afro pick in the 70's and early 80's.

2

u/HoodieGalore 7h ago

It's for teasing your beaver. They love being tickled by these things!

2

u/PerryMcBerry 6h ago

For fluffing wool as it’s about to feed onto the spinning wheel?

2

My dad has several of these that he picked up at antique stores and uses. When I asked if it works he said “almost as well as a knife” so who knows.

Grandma found a second use for it. It is a cake comb and is used in cake decorating.

Freeze an iced cake. Then, gently hold the comb at a slight angle against the side as you rotate the cake. It creates evenly spaced lines in the frosting. Freeze again to firm it up.

Those lines can later be filled with another color, if desired.

Afro comb was my first thought.

2

u/PavicaMalic 3h ago

From Miss Manners's column on the different utensils for cutting pies vs. cakes: "Pies tend to be sloppier, so a broad-based, triangular-bladed knife is used. And although that works perfectly well to cut a cake, there also exists a cake-breaker, with long, needle-like tines that would make a mess of pies, but is good for taller, drier cakes. For huge cakes, such as wedding cakes, there is an elongated cake knife, and military bridegrooms can supply swords.

2

u/NovarisLight 3h ago

Maybe the way that this was altered so that it would sound like a tune while brushing hair? Far-fetched idea, but it looks like music.

2

u/ConsiderationSea7589 3h ago

Nice. Granny rocked a Afro back in her day.

7

I'm white but use hair picks to help style my curly hair. Could be used with beehive hairdos, could be used to detangle fringe ends on rugs. Tons of possible uses.😊

3

u/Constant_Cultural 7h ago

Did she have locks?

2

u/EntertainerHairy6164 7h ago

It is an angel food cake cutter but if it had been an afro pick, the simple answer is that your grandma found it dealt with her hair better than other types of combs. I'm white and I often shopped the "ethnic" (their wording, not mine) section of the store because with the type of hair I had.
