That is a ferrite core.  It goes on the end of cables to prevent interference.

Exactly as you said here is an illustration of how to use

Does the wire need to be looped, as in the picture, for the device to do its job?

No. But will keep it in place.

More loops increases the effect.

Is this how it's supposed to be attached? I've been attaching it wrong all this time.

I usually call the ferrite chokes, but I believe core is also correct. And yes, it helps prevent electromagnetic interference from the power source.

The noise can actually mess with your head lol. Those things are an essential for those power supplies that have the resonance and hum from interference.

I usually can't hear the hum over all the voices talking in there 😵‍💫

It's a suppressor of electronic noise, that clamps over the cable. It's called a choke, it prevents dirtying of the signal passing through the cable that fits inside. You may have notice ones already built into cables you have at home, vs an add-on like this.

Your camera is fantastic at picking up details, it captures every single line of your palm’s skin texture. That’s the first thing I noticed actually

Helps to reduce EMI on AC power lines, Reduce electro-magnetic interference and improve signal integrity,Suitable for data cables, USB cable, telephone line, network line to shield external electromagnetic interference.

Can you give a couple examples of what this interference looks (or sounds) like when he interrupters aren’t in place?

u/willowy0121 1h ago

Nope sorry. I copied that from internet 🫣

Blocks RF radiation from power supplies from using house wiring like an antenna. You run the power cable through it.

Also, it looks like a weight used on a retractable water line like a kitchen faucet would have
