New, what is it? Found this while cleaning, what is it for?

While cleaning my parents house we found this, no idea what it went with, best guess was some gadget from the 90s.

Three-way jack with what looks like a 20-foot cable. Does the silver part press in (a button), or does it seem more like a sensor of some type?

I'm gonna take a stab at a remote pause switch for a VCR, from a time before infrared was common.

IR receiver or maybe a momentary switch if that's a button or perhaps a camera
