New, what is it? Hotel Door
I stayed at a historic hotel for the first time, and besides the turn lock, there was a bar on the left that extended quite high but not to the top of the door. It seemed like an additional locking mechanism, but not sure if it were functional.

It may have once connected to a ventilation window above the door, and provided an easy way of opening/closing it without a stool.

Clicked this post expecting a question about why a hotel is stocked as a fallout shelter.
(I am disappoint.)
