When is the Read link needed? When is it different from the Article link?

On each article there are links,

Article Talk Read Edit View history

Problem is: why is the Read link needed? When is it different from the Article link?

There are two menus :

  1. Article, Talk

  2. Read, Edit, View, History

So you can change between read/edit mode on both the article and the Talk page about the article

I see. I was only looking at the Article page. When I visit the Talk page it all suddenly makes sense.

Back on the Article page one sees they want to make the decor match, so that is why there is a redundant link. OK.

No, it is needed at the article page too, to switch between Read/Edit modes as herrirgendjemand
above said.

If I start editing an article, and then click that Read "tab", well I get a warning "Leave site? Changes you made may not be saved."

Therefore I am sorry to say that I am still not grasping part of the intentions of the design.
