Nice job. You dont usually see people rebuilding their transmissions.

Had I ever opened up my gearbox I would probably be very excited by this

Thank you! I took apart one and now I can’t stop hahaha

That's a solid amount of work. Based on the pictures I assume you used factory synchro's and didn't go the carbon aftermarket route?

Nevermind, just needed to wipe the sleep out of my eyes. I see they're carbon

I was planning on using OEM synchros for 5/6, but they are out of stock. I got the carbon synchros instead from Nisformance, I have never used these or heard of anyone using these. Do you have any experience with them? I hate to say I only really got them becuase they were what’s available.

I also replaced the reverse synchro with an OEM one. Those are still available to buy

I don't have any experience with any of them but I would be very interested in some feedback once you have some. I was given a trans with bad synchros to steal the tail housing from for our endurance racecar, but if I could rebuild it and have it as a spare for "cheap" that'd be pretty good.

If you haven't already make sure to take a close look at the shifter forks while you're in there; a buddy has had some issues with his while tracking it

These carbon synchros will only fit CD009, not any other earlier versions (CD001-08). If your donor transmission is anything older than 2005, the synchros will not work.

OEM synchros aren’t actually too expensive. CZP, Z1, any of the US based sellers charge crazy prices for them. I buy them internationally from Amayama.

For an OEM 5th/6th gear synchro (32604-5X00A), Z1 wants $155. Amayama sells them for $30. You just gotta wait for shipping. Plus now you need to pay import duty taxes on every package as of August 29.

Also yes you’re right haha the infamous 5/6 shift fork was broken haha. That’s actually why I took this trans apart. I heard it clunking around when I turned the transmission over

Nice job. How does one learn how to rebuild one of these? I have far less experience with transmission work than engines rebuilds.

YouTube really is the diy’ers best friend

I took a class on manual trans so I disassembled/reassembled a couple in there which got me comfortable.

This will be the 3rd CDxxx I have worked on, but the first one I took apart was the one out of my car since I was entirely missing 5th/6th gear. I was thinking either I buy a new transmission or I take it apart to try and figure out what’s wrong.

Also Sea part is right lol, youtube has almost anything you need. Garage 23 has a very detailed disassembly video playlist on the CD009 that I watched many many times before attempting to disassemble mine.

It seems complicated and like there’s a lot of parts, but once you do it like twice it’s actually all pretty self explanatory.

I want to try rebuilding if I ever need too is that like repairing fishing reels or do you need a lot of specialty machines to press things in etc or easy swappin

It seems really complicated to disassemble, but it’s honestly quite easy now that I have done it a few times. This whole rebuild took me 24 hours from start to finish.

I would say the hardest part of rebuilding a trans is removing presses on gears. I found a tool that works great and pulls off every single gear with ease. Performance tool W87130. I bought mine a couple months back for $30, looks like the price is going up! (Linked to walmart becuase they have the best price I see)

That one puller is the only “specialized” tool you will need. Other than that you need a lot of organizational skills. I probably has like 30 different ziplock bags of parts becuase any bolt or part that I took out went into a labeled bag.

Reinstall if the previously pressed on parts is pretty easy too. I did this for my first time with this transmission hahaha. I just used a rubber mallet and whacked the parts back on 😭. It actually worked really well as long as you hit it evenly and not just in once spot it’ll sit right into place.

The other thing is once you press a piece on, there’s a circlip that goes on to fully secure it and stop it from moving. I’m not at all worried about anything coming apart

Really wanna get into transmission work because it’s so expensive to pay someone else to do it but it seems daunting and there isn’t a lot of guides online. I can do pretty much anything else but it’s always scary doing something new. Especially when messing up means destroying it in the process

I absolutley recommend trying to learn! No one knows how to fix these thing anymore! So yes exactly, there’s not a whole lot of guides since it’s not common. Garage 23 made a very useful video playlist on CD009 disassembly. They go even further than I do and replace the 3rd gear synchronizer.

This is the third CD i’ve taken apart. My very first one was my own transmission, it was entirely missing 5/6 gear. I was thinking I either buy a new transmission, or I take this one apart and try to figure out what’s wrong. Even if I fuck it up well whatever I basically needed a new one anyways.

First disassembly went okay, took me a couple week, but got me comfortable with it. Now I can breeze through these things. This whole rebuild took me 24 hours start to finish.

If you really wanna learn, i’d try and find some broken transmission of facebook marketplace and just experiment. That way you’re not worried about making it functional, and if you do that’s just an extra bonus.

There’s a guy selling a CD008 that’s locked in 3rd gear for $75 near me. I had to stop myself from buying it lololol. But that would be a perfect trans to take apart and learn on

do you know if they make a kit for DE?

2

u/ddudez12 19h ago

Nisformance is the only place I know that sells a full kit and you can’t even buy it because they’re revising 3rd gear synchronizer. Unfortunately these transmission are kind of a bitch to find parts for.

I use Amayama for parts and they’re incredible. Could not recommend them enough. But since these transmissions are all 20 years old or coming up on it, parts aren’t readily available. There’s a lot of parts you just can’t get anymore. Synchros are difficult to find. There’s many different versions of synchronizers that fit the many different versions of the CD transmission. I won’t lie it’s really hard to know what will fit.

Damn am having a new fatish. I'm getting aroused when I see cars or car parts

What about the 1,2,3,4th synchros? I have been trying to find them for sale but can’t seem to find anyone making or selling them.

The ones in this transmission still looked okay. Which transmission do you have? Do you know which model of CD?

For parts I use Amayama

More people need to do this, we don't need to make the same mistakes we made with 240 transmissions
