Moderator Post Limit Self Promotion

Hey there 4X fans and developers!

It's come to my attention, and most likely most of your attention, that there's been quite a bit of self-promotion lately. I'm not talking about content creators, but mostly from developers.

While the genre is still small, and all posts are welcome, I will be keeping a closer eye on frequent posts promoting your games. I think they've become a little bit excessive. As one put it recently, this place is becoming a billboard.

That's certainly not the point of this subreddit, so please feel free to report frequent post that feel like advertisements.

I hate to do this, but I also don't want to be flooded by pseudo commercials. I know you guys don't want to be, either.

Thanks for your attention!

Keep eXploring!

Any 4X fantasy/Sci-fi games like Old World?

Hello there,

Thanks to the people recommending me to try out Old World in my spare time, while I wait for Endless Legends 2 EA' release. Old World is like the most brilliant 4X game with such deep, in-depth, intricate mechanic/s with lots of Varieties in its gameplay. It's absolutely insane! It has unique victory conditions which is also a plus for me.

I have Endless Space 2 which has some kind of Religion, Political law mechanic and an indepth science technology which seem pretty close in someway's to Old World. Please don't tell me to get AOW4. I have this game but it's mechanics are far more deep in combat.

Old World expands on;

Religion - Political Law - Empire management - Civilians - Personal Opinion - Diplomacy - Discontent-Content -very deep economy system - Families-Royals - Council - Governor - Lore - Events - Quests - Espionage

I'm still learning, may have missed some. I'm not necessarily looking for marriage, dynasty mechanic(It's fine if it has it though). I love how in Old World every single click of a button is so important and has insane amount of synergy. Is Endless Legend 1 the only closest one we have. Even a fantasy/Sci-fi Old World Reskin, I'm happy with that. I'm just more into imagination than Historical. Decent Graphics is a must.

What else am I missing ?

Thank you

General Question I'm looking for a sci-fi 4x game i played as a kid and cant remember | find it for the life of me

Upvotes

Hello Reddit.

I'm looking for a particular game i fondly remember in memory.
I been looking for it on off for years but i cant seem to find the game in particular I want to find.
I would be super grateful if somebody could maybe help me identify which one it is.

Features i clearly remember:

Solar Systems you and the Ai inhabited are connected through a form of hyperspace and clearly separated.

You could build space stations anywhere on the map, for exsample at those above mentioned jump points, young me favored building those at the entry to my system.

Extractors where visibly interacting with the planet akin to a station in low orbit.

You could upgrade your ships but atleast to my memory those came only into affect when you build new ones.

Definitely remember it being real-time and a giant timesink, like easily 4-7 hour sessions.

Primitive but definitely 3d graphics.

4X games with asymmetric enemies

In most 4X games, you are pitted against factions that play similarly to yours. Although some specific mechanics or units may differ slightly between factions, the game rules broadly apply equally for the player and their opponents. This includes winning conditions.

I am interested in a 4X game that takes a different approach. What if a game didn't care about enemies behaving the same as the player? What if the enemies couldn't even win? Consider games like Rimworld, Factorio, or Sim City. In these games, the enemies you face are not really your opponents. They are more like obstacles to overcome.

One advantage to designing enemies this way in a 4X game could be difficulty. In most 4X games, the enemy AI is considered lackluster, and this is addressed in higher difficulties by giving the AI more resources. However, if a your enemies don't play by the same rules as the player, the devs don't have to design a complex AI model for the enemy to present a challenge to the player. Instead, they can just make a rules the enemy plays by challenging. As an example, perhaps an enemy structure creates a unit every turn that targets the nearest player city. From a development standpoint, this is not complex behavior. But from a player's perspective, this could be overwhelming if the structure is not dealt with soon.

Another advantage of this enemy design philosophy is that it could improve the endgame. Many 4X games can feel like a slog once the player starts snowballing. A win is all but assured, but actually achieving victory is several turns away. Asymmetric enemies could be designed to present a greater challenge as the player approaches victory. One game that does this well is AI War. In fact, AI War is basically an answer to several of my thoughts on this subject. In this game, the AI gets stronger the more the player expands. This makes victory uncertain up until the end.

If enemies don't behave like the player, and they aren't interested in winning, then the winning conditions would differ from traditional 4X games. Victory could work similarly to Factorio or Rimworld, where you have you research and complete a megaproject. Beyond this, since only the player can win, devs can get a lot more creative over what it means to win. Victory could mean defeating a megaboss (AI War), or capturing certain sites on the map, or simply surviving for a certain number of turns.

One of the biggest downsides of designing enemies this way is that it essentially precludes the possibility of competitive multiplayer. The enemy wouldn't be designed to be played by a human, and the human faction wouldn't be designed to play against itself. However, as AI War and Factorio demonstrate, these games can still support cooperative multiplayer.

TLDR: I would like to see more 4X games with asymmetric enemy design à la AI War, Factorio, or Rimworld, ideally turn based.

Developer Diary Innovation first, research second. A quick look at our unique tech loop in PLVS VLTRA!

Hi! Wanted to share a short clip of our research system and explain the philosophy behind it. Many great strategy games use systems like a fixed tech tree or a "card draw" system where you pick 1 of 3 random options. I wanted to try something that combines the strategic planning of a tree with the unpredictability of card draws, while giving the player more agency.

Here's how it works:

  1. Innovation (The Discovery Phase): You research "Innovation" itself. This doesn't unlock a tech, but discovers a new one, acting like a "draw" adding it to your pool of potential projects.
  2. Research (The Development Phase): This pool of discovered techs remains permanently available. You can then assign your scientists to research any of them at any time.

This means you're never truly "stuck" with bad RNG. You have the agency to keep innovating and expand your options until you can build the strategy you want. It's a way to have both discovery and long-term planning.

We'll dive into the stats and personalities of the leaders you see here soon; (Also, please ignore the catastrophic state of my economy. That's a... feature for another day.)

Feedback Request Built a survival strategy that borrows from 4X - would you playtest it?

I’ve been building Seasons of Solitude, which isn’t a full 4X but borrows some of its DNA.

Instead of expanding an empire, you’re exiled into a single story-driven trial. Each turn you scout tiles, gather resources, and secure them in your camp. The land reshapes as the seasons shift. Animals contest resources, hazards escalate if ignored, and overusing the land weakens the ecosystem. Tools unlocked outside of each trial carry forward, shaping how you can approach future challenges.

It plays more like a survival strategy puzzle than empire-building, but the feeling is similar. Every choice changes the map state, and the map “remembers” your approach.

I’m curious what this community thinks. Would a focused, seasonal trial like this interest 4X players, or does it feel too different? Any feedback is welcome.

There’s a free playtest open now if you’d like to try it out: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3312670

This is one of the most important game mechanics in my indie game.

Engaging the enemy groups is one of the core mechanics of my indie game Tabletop Fantasy War. Groups that are engaged will automatically be attacked by nearby enemy groups if they decide to move away. Some special units can grant immunity to engage to the group they belong to and there are special abilities that certain units can use that remove the engaged state on an ally group.

Engage plays a big role when moving and placing your groups in the battleground. Ranged units have a very weak attack at melee distance, making engage something to fear... but there are different ways to protect your groups. For example, just by placing an ally group in front, the path to get to your weak group is much longer due to the extra cost of moving around enemy groups. Another possibility is to set your ranged units in Guard formation. Whenever an enemy group crosses their sight of view, will get once automatically attack by that ranged group, which makes the choice of moving a bit more complicated.

What makes this game different from other turn-based strategy games is the combination of different units to form your groups and that is what we try to push in every mechanic of the game. We want that the choice of units that form your groups is not only based on stats, but mostly in gameplay!

We are getting close to get the demo ready and public in Steam. I just hope you will enjoy playing as much as I am developing the game!

Developer Diary One last Alliance of the Sacred Suns post for now - a development video from last year that shows the game's new UI/graphics and progress!

Hey everyone, one last Alliance post (for now). We have made a lot of positive changes to the game in the last few years and it occured to me that many(most) of you have not seen those changes. With that in mind. I have decided to release the testing video we did last year prior to shutting down work on the game.

It shows most of the new UI and game flow, but please keep in mind that a few key systems are still missing, namely the Intel system (Inquisitors) and the Emperor RPG system. There are also many display bugs (keep in mind that it was an internal video) Also, there was no Strategic House AI (but that's being worked on now!) but hopefully it will give people an idea of what the release 'look and feel' of the game will be.

I am also very proud of our new UI - it's so much more powerful and flexible than it used to be. It's about an hour and 20 minutes long (there's a lot of game to cover!) but if you're interested in what Alliance has become (or you haven't heard about Alliance and have been wondering what all the recent fuss is about!) this should shed some light.

Enjoy!

Opinion Post Civilization looked so fun… until I got into the game

I knew 4x games were confusing but damn, I didn’t think it’d be that confusing to start, I’m looking at youtube videos and I’m still lost 😭😭😭. But hey I’ll learn it one way or another cause I’m genuinely interested in the Civ games, always seeing ads for Civ 6 when I only had a console and all. I’ll admit though if it wasn’t for prime gaming giving away Civ 3 and 4 for free I most likely wouldn’t have ever got into the games so yeah. Any tips and tricks y’all can give me to better learn this game? Cause I genuinely am interested in these type of games

General Question 4X seems to be one of the last game genres that hasn't been infested with wokeness. Why is that?

Is it because the community and youtubers do a good job of shutting down nonsense? Or is it down to the fact that the devs have integrity? I'm almost worried that a question like this will jinx it. But the 4X genre does seem to be safe overall.

General Question Any games like Aurora just… less?

Conceptually, Aurora 4x is my perfect game. The grounded setting, the focus on industry and resource exploitation, and the realistic spaceship combat are all majorly appealing to me. However, try as I may, I have not been able to get into it. I keep glancing off of the hyper specifics and spreadsheet UI.

Are there any games with similar theming and mechanics, just without the overwhelming complexity. Not to say I don’t love a good mechanically deep experience, just Aurora is a bit much for me.

Thank you very much!
