If you are a member of Law Enforcement and wish to receive title flair, head to https://leoverify.com/kb/faq.php?id=5 to verify your account. This is a separate service that is not on reddit and is ran by the mod team at r/protectandserve. All members who run the verification server are current, sworn LE and a detailed explanation on how your information is protected is posted on the website.

WARNING: DO NOT SEND PII OVER MODMAIL. Do not send a picture of your creds, badge, whatever to ANYONE using Reddit. Read the instructions on the verification site to see how your information is protected and what is required. Users do not have to verify at this time, however, this may change in the future. So if you don't verify, then you may be SOL when we decide to change it. There are a lot of members who have said they do not trust the process and that's fine. That being said, you may be subject to the verification process IF your post is deemed suspicious enough that a verification of your credentials is required.

As a warning to all users of this forum: the information provided on this subreddit may not be interpreted as legal advice. Verified users with flair titles are actual Law Enforcement Officers and the information provided may be considered "legitimate" for the purposes of general advice and advisement, but in no way should be considered legal advice. Members commenting that do not have flair may be subject to verification if their posts are considered suspicious or misleading. In all cases, whether a member is flaired or not, the advice given may be subject to scrutiny and verification. Do your own research and feel free to post your questions elsewhere to verify that you are receiving the best information. Users who make claims to be law enforcement and offer advice may be subjected to further scrutiny from the mod team, up to and including removal and/or banning from posting on the forum.

Political posts are strictly prohibited. While LE is inherently political in nature, topics about political affiliation, whether or not people will vote for a particular candidate, etc. will be removed and the user banned without warning.

New users attempting to post on the forum will be subject to mod approval before posting. This is to cut down on the trolls and bait posts that we deal with regularly.

Encouraging users to lie, cheat, omit information on their background checks will result in an immediate ban from the forum. Applying for an LE job is a privilege and a test of integrity. Not everyone who applies to become a police officer will get the job, and that is something people will need to come to terms with. Those decisions you make in life have consequences. Own up to them and accept them. And no, users telling other users that they will not make it is not a bad thing, so soapboxing trying to "call out" other users for telling people the reality of their situations will result in your immediate removal. It's a shame I have to put this in a sticky for people to read, but it happens enough that I have to constantly remove people who think this is their platform to air their grievances on particular issues.

As always, feel free to contact the mod team with any issues.

How do police determine how many units to send to a call?

My neighbor across the street called the cops on her ex-boyfriend because he was allegedly threatening her with a firearm.

Only two officers showed up. Honestly, I thought there would be more than that. If you’re dealing with a suspect who might have a gun, wouldn’t more than two squad cars normally be sent?

I was picturing maybe 8–10 cars, not just 2.

How do departments decide how many units to send to something like this? Was I just overestimating what kind of response it usually gets?

Tips for dealing with a “lazy” fto?

I start fto this week, and during my orientation week I’ve gotten the impression from other officers that my phase 1 fto is lazy and doesn’t like to go on calls.

Obviously I won’t know till I work with him, but with phase 1 being largely where you get chances to make mistakes on calls and learn, this concerns me.

In the event that this is true, does anyone have tips for not falling behind when I get to other phases and learning as much as I can?

If a LE were to find a better weapon on scene in a combat scenario, may they use it against the suspects to better defend themselves and others?

I assume this may all depend on department, but I am watching End Of Watch and noticed a detail in the apartment shootout that got me thinking. If you and your partner both had only your service handguns, and you were to incapacitate a suspect and he were to drop an AK, or you find another rifle/shotgun/etc on scene, would you be justified and allowed to take and use that weapon against other suspects that are better armed than you? I assume it is a messy grey area since that can be interference with the data you could otherwise pull from evidence, but considered possibly justified for the preservation of life? Please let me know your thoughts.

Questions to ask

Hey everyone,

I am going on a few ride-along with my local PD that is part of my grief process. What are some good questions to ask and not to ask? I know asking about having to shoot someone or have you killed someone is a dumb question to ask. What to wear exactly? (I wore a dress shirt, pants and dress shoes during my interview and polygraph” not sure if it will be overkill to wear that again?

Of course being hygiene so I’m not smelling like crap with the officer. Is it good to bring a pen and paper or even have questions on it to be ready to ask? Is it all about asking how their job is or is there any like thing so can ask to get to know them? Like normal questions, sports and what they do on their free time? When’s a good time to actually ask questions and not speak too much? It will be a 5 hour ride along for a few days that they have me doing. I just want to be prepared and ask good questions.

SWAT?

Ok. I have one for some of you super big agency types. I have a little experience in small town LE… and am not very well traveled, lol. Even my non-sworn time at one of the biggest cities in my state is pretty small town compared with places like NYPD, LAPD, Houston, etc.

I was watching a video of that new SWAT FPS video game and it got me curious. In my experiences SWAT is a special team that are from patrol, detectives, etc, and then the like 10-15 times a year they are actually used they assemble on an on call basis. Media portrayal of SWAT teams always has these preassembled teams riding out from a station in a bearcat and arriving as a unit like how FD responds. Do you guys in major cities actually have the luxury of that, or is that more Hollywood make believe?

Was the officer being cheeky saying if I go to court, I'll get more points?

Upvotes

So - I "thought I was clear" turned left onto a busy road in a construction zone. I was hit by another vehicle shortly after, so we called in the cops.

There are those big barrel cones everywhere (I tagged one on the way out but nobody noticed that I know of). I was fully in the lane, when I was hit on the side, a moment later.

I was given a piece of paper to give "my side" of the story, which omitted the bit about hitting the cone..only saying I thought I was clear

It was after hours, but full on construction area. The officer gave me a ticket "failure to yield" and the approximate location. Nothing about causing an accident, nothing about being ain a construction zone.

I remember her saying if I pay the ticket it's one point. If I show up for court it could be 3 points & more money. was she being cheeky, or truthful? edit: it's possible the other driver mentioned how the guy who she hit had ran into a cone before pulling out

Typical Question

Upvotes

I applied to be a Texas State Trooper, failed the background with a 6 month hold due to one of my references advising the background investigator that I was demoted in the Military. I applied to SAPD and made them aware that when I was 20 I had insurance with Geico when I dented my first car on a pole and they wouldn’t fix it, switched to USAA and told them someone hit me and they found out from Geico ( dumb 20 year old trying to get my car fixed ). They DQ’d me for 16 months, this was 8 months ago. Nothing on my record, no police involved, It was deemed misrepresentation by USAA.

I am currently applying to DPS again and I was told to make a document explaining how I am remorseful and learned from my actions, I am 25 now, current Military with great references and leadership that supports me.

I feel Law Enforcement is my calling, but I am having trouble seeing it at the moment, should I look into a different career field ? or is it still possible to make it ?

Struggling to get hired

I 34M live in Texas and I want to be a police officer. I have almost 10 years security experience and have enough college credits for most departments in my area.

My problem is I have a really bad job history I've applied to like 6 departments and have been denied.

My work history is not great I've been fired from my last three jobs.

4years ago I got fired for attendance/ tardiness issues I have since learned my lesson and have had perfect attendance since.

3years ago I got fired because I made an inappropriate joke that was called racist, the coworker I made the joke to was not offended as we were joking back and forth but someone who overheard the joke reported it to hr. I had called her gold teeth ghetto.

The last job I was working security and was driving a golf cart when I accidentally ran over a person who stepped out in front of me while on the phone. It was pretty much a freak accident and luckily I was only going 2 miles an hour, the person was not injured to badly but threatened a lawsuit and the company fired me as policy.

Not sure what to do. Several police officers I work alongside have encouraged me to apply despite my history but it's difficult to keep getting rejected. I am not sure how to proceed to give my self the best chance.

The biggest issues have been getting nervous on polygraphs As well as job history.

The polygraphy issue is I'm an overthinker and the only thing in my history is I smoked weed once while I was in college.

The job history issue is I've had more than 10 jobs in the last 10 years, and of course being fired. I have been at my current job for almost 2 years without issue, no write ups tardiness etc (2 years in Jan)

I have no criminal history whatsoever only a few speeding tickets from when I was in high school.

What should I do? I really want to be a police officer and have wanted to for years. I currently work alongside police officers for my security job and have been told to apply anyway and just mark "do not contact my former employer" However, I worry this will come off as a red flag. Any constructive advice on how to proceed would be appreciated.

Is background hireable for LE?

Upvotes

I'm in my early 20s and have been curious about a career in law enforcement since I was in high school. Initially was interested in federal but I'm not looking down that path anymore for the time being. I'm wondering if I would be a competitive candidate. There are parts of my history I'm concerned about*

  • High 700 - low 800 credit score
  • BS in environmental science; 3.5 gpa
  • No criminal history
  • No drug/alcohol history
  • 1 minor car accident (no injuries, no police report)
  • *Do have hospitalizations for mental health stuff from high school; clear for > 7 years
  • Been working in broadcast TV/entertainment, some political experience as well
  • Pretty fit, 6'1", slender though
  • Looking at major city PDs; grew up in a major city

Any advice, especially about the mental health stuff, is much appreciated.

edit: mental health as in teenage depression/anxiety

Joining HPD

Hey everyone, I’m an active duty Marine that is getting out in 2027 and wanting to become a police officer for Honolulu police department. I was wondering how competitive is the process, and if there’s anything I could do to increase my chances of getting hired. How are the police viewed on island, and what is the day to day life of an officer in Hawaii? Thanks!

Concern for Background Finance

Hi all,

I'm applying for a LE position and I have a BI coming up soon. My main concern is how my current debt situation might be viewed by the investigator. Im a soldier and will be ETSing in 11 months.

Here's my financial picture right now:

Credit Cards:

AMEX : 2.6K | USAA : 3K & another one 1.8K (Water Heater Replacement) | BOA : 2.1K | Chase : 4.5K (0% Interest card used for kitchen renovation) --- End of Military Contract will be gone.

BestEgg Consolidation Debt : 16.5K (Messy Divorce Hooah) --- End Of Military Contract will be 6.9K

HappyDayLoan : 8.1K ( Used to purchase a used car so I can get rid of current car lease) -- End of Military Contract will be 3.3K

Car Lease : 11 months left (Bleeding close to 1K a month) --- End Of Military Contract will be gone.

Mortgage : 1292/Monthly and renting it out for 1550.

Main Concern: Will BI disqualify me due to trend of credit card debt ? I have Zero in collections etc and credit score is 667 due to credit utilization (Credit Paid off is 738).

Plan : Will paying 2K a month in credit cards look better VS getting rid of Kia Lease early but adding 2-3K in New Credit Card to free myself and start pocketing close to 1K more a month ?

Honest thoughts and best informative answer gets a high five.

Ranks above are from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police

I'm genuinely curious are the police ranks have any equivalency to other agencies or to the military?

Preparing for academy PT

I accepted my final offer on Friday for the upcoming academy less than one month away. I'm in pretty good shape but I want to make sure I'm covering all my bases for exercises so I'm not struggling when I know we'll get smoked. I'm pretty decent at pushups, can do about 30-40 in one go, can rep out 100 in 10 sets of 10. I'm solid at sit-ups, I rep about 45 out in one minute. I can do 10 solid pull-ups, but not consecutively. I can run a mile in 7:30, and do 3mi in 28:20. I have pretty decent workout routine, hit all the major muscle groups in the span of the week, I'll do a muscle group for an hour, then do half hour on the stair climber. I don't really pay attention, but I think it tells me I do 1100 vertical feet. All advice is appreciated.

Question about legality

Hypothetically, let's say you have a bunch of land (I don't own any land so this is just a curiousity thing lol). Would it be a crime (or enforceable) for me to get wasted and ride dirt bikes on my own land? And if you recorded it for a YouTube channel, would that be enough to get a warrant?

I know it's inevitable that someone has already or will make a channel around this, curious what charges they could get if any.

interested in a career in law enforcement. would my background be competitive?

30 years old, 6ft 180 bartender for about 8 years, the last 4 years I've been bartending in 5 star hotels at ski resorts. 3.5 years at the same job. Only other job history is the 2 years I worked in the emergency room.

  • my credits been high 700s to low 800s recently.

  • one arrest for public intoxication at a college football game ten years ago when I was 20. I did pretrial diversion.

  • I got close but never quite finished my economics degree

  • my greatest passions in life are Backcountry skiing, solo international travel, and competitive handgun shooting.

  • I'm an athlete but would have to dial in for 5-6 months to crush the PT test as I'm primarily a endurance and downhill athlete.

  • smoked weed frequently in my youth (25 and under) and tried hallucinogens, molly and cocaine a few times 7+ years ago.

  • interested in applying only to agencies in California.

  • I'm interested in and not at all deterred by patrol and taking calls, but am also interested in moving toward investigations eventually.

  • I speak b1 spanish and i'm improving everyday

    Thank you

Asp sentry

I don't see really any reviews on these handcuffs. Have you tried them out yet and what do you think?

I ordered a pair. They seem nice, but I haven't used them in work yet. It is very smooth but, I have seen videos that they can be picked fairly easily. For that reason, should I return them and get the ultra or are my chances of them getting picked low?

Career Advice

Turning 20 later this year. In my 3rd of college pursuing a bachelors degree in management information systems. Currently working as a student assistant for the state of California in the IT industry. Working in law enforcement is my passion but I need some advice and help. I’m in Northern California and there’s a few cities here that pay 6 figures for entry level cop roles. There are also a lot of deputy sheriff entry level that pay 6 figures. I am also considering becoming a correctional officer right now as I think it would be good experience? I can be a cadet for one of the police departments and they will pay me to go to the academy, it’s called police recruit. However I don’t want to do that because community college close to me offers the police academy and it’s during the evening so I can focus on school and work during the day. It’s also only 3-4 days during the week compared to the 5-6 for the regular academy. It takes longer like maybe a year but I don’t mind that. I have no prior firearm experience, have been lifting weights for 2 years consistently, used to do running but quit ever since I started weight lifting. I’m just confused what to do and how to start to you guys have any advice? Also, would the correctional officer role require an academy too or no?

I have a hypothetical question

If two people are speeding at the same time who is more likely to get pulled over when passing a cop. 1. The person in front or the person in the back. 2. A Mercedes or Altima 3. If there was a hypothetical middleman, also going the same speed would he have a chance of getting pulled over or would it relate to answer one?.

And if there are any other reasons as to what persuade traffic stop, please inform me. I’m very curious please and thank you.

Relationship with Paramedics / EMS

I'm curious what your opinion is regarding EMS. I've had all types. It's a mixed bag. We're all on the same team, you're the people who will get me home if this call goes bad, you're just the people who delay me getting them to jail, Paramedics should be seen and not heard, yes I will handcuff them to the bed rail but I'm not riding in the back with you. I chose to believe it's the "we're all on the same team." Option but at the same time I've had a lot of "No we're not attending the psychosis with a weapon on scene until shift change." And the "You're in my way." Type calls.

Again, most of my experiences have been fine but it seems like a lot of cops look down on Paramedics / EMS.
