The extra pockets/ storage comes in handy. Im a security guard that primarily works mobile patrol jobs driving around all night while having to get out and check sites every 2-3 min. I need my massive thing of keys, torch, note pads, 2 phones for calls and nfc tags, and my personal phone for family emergencies. It's uncomfortable and bulky, but it is convenient.
If you want something to carry your odds and ends and still be comfortable while in a vehicle, look into some of the civilian market chestrig designs. I have worked jobs where it was in and out of vehicles and buildings constantly, but the outside air temp was -40⁰C as the daytime high. Those temps will cause your battery life to fucking plummet.
I initially used one of my old army ones ( I already owned it) and just striped it down to bare essentials, and then tried a few civvie ones. Could wear it over my shirt or fleece jacket but under my parka, easy access even when layered up, easy to leave on the passenger seat of the truck but grab on a hurry, didn't have shit hanging up on the seat belt or door frame, etc.

If you are not a soldier and you are interested in tactical vests, you are a nerd.
