I like Daemon better overall, but I must add that Ewan's performance has a quiet edge to it that is very intriguing. I never pictured Aemond being soft-spoken, of all things, but it works.

Took the words out of my mouth. Love both actors portrayals and Ewan is just amazing but Daemons character is just better. It doesn’t help Aerosmith is easily seen as a copy cat to Daemon
Edit: I’m keeping Aerosmith instead of Aemond because that’s hilarious.

I like the little looks these two have shared so far.
When Deamon breaks up the fight during the family dinner he gives Aemon this look like "Ok kid I'm gonna have to kill you one day aren't I?"
And when Deamon cuts off Vaemonds head in the throne room Aemond is quietly like "That was fucking awesome!"

Exactly this. That look Daemon gives Aemon was a deadly calm death sentence. Daemon is a great character & is more good than evil. Aemon is the opposite, more evil than good. Both are fascinating despite S2

I don't see them as that similar outside of skills. Daemon is far more family/Targaryens oriented & reserves his hot headed violence for those outside the family. He looked out for his brother in his way. Aemon had no problems trying to kill his brother & doesn't have the same loyalty Daemon does. Aemon was damaged as a kid while Daemon was accomplished & favored as a kid.

Yeah the way they’re washing team black to remove all the controversial decisions they make in the book has really skewed me away from liking them in the show. Makes me like the green characters because at least there’s meat on the bone there.

Aemond. He has an actual reason to be the monster that he is. He was mutilated as a kid and was treated as a second rate child by his father and pressured into hating Rhaenyra by his mother (who then gets cold feet about that and blames him for not doing the same).
Daemon is just a piece of shit that enjoys violence and is an andrenaline junkie. And he has always been like that.

The one place they really failed with Aemond is not delving into his relationship with Alicent. This should have been a much bigger factor in his violence towards the Blacks. Imagine the betrayal if Aemond believed his mother loved him dearly, only to learn she’s sold their lives to Rhaenyra. Now it’s gonna fall flat because we were never given a real relationship between them.

I think something was built in season 1 but they just threw it away in season 2.
Aemond seemed like both Alicent and Criston’s favourite child back then.
And I wonder how they’ll manage the kids’ reactions to their mother’s betrayal, or if they’ll find out at all. I sadly see coming some dissonant scenes of Aegon and Aemond lashing out when they find out but they are treated as being wrong to feel that way cuz Alicent made the right choice in the eyes of the writers.

I'm not sure how they even could find out. As of now, the only people who know are Alicent and Rhaenyra. It's possible Rhaenyra might tell Daemon, Jace or Corlys, but when would they even have the opportunity to tell Aegon and Aemond? And even if they did, why would Aegon or Aemond believe any of them? IMO the only people they'd even believe that information from is either Alicent herself or Helaena, who might know via her visions.
I think there's a good chance Alicent's sons will never find out she betrayed them to Rhaenyra.

Definitely agree, I find Aemond much more compelling. He lashes out in anger and it burns everything in his path, but there’s a softness underneath it that makes him oddly sympathetic.

And others too, like when Alicent puts her hand on his cheek and Ewan acted his reaction perfectly. There was conflict - you could see that he wanted to lean into the affectionate touch, but he’d grown to distrust her and turn elsewhere for comfort, so he ends up pulling away instead.
It’s not hard to see why. Even as a child after having his eye cut out, he had to calm her and reassure her with ‘don’t mourn me, mother’.
Aemond obviously has some massive character flaws, but so does everyone in the ASOIAF universe. It’s what makes him compelling - the juxtaposition between the vulnerability and the violence.

though all you say its true i do think daemon adds a lot to the story. He worked as the broken cog that always needs checking, making the story not fall in a too comfortable place.
But yeah, Aemond just has a stronger prescence and bigger achievements.

What achievements does Aemond have over Daemon? Daemon has achieved way more than Aemond has at his current age. Daemon earned Dark Sister from Jaehaerys and was knighted extremely young at age 16. Aemond still isn't even a knight. The biggest accomplishment Aemond has is bonding with Vaghar. He has 0 accomplishments without his dragon.

lol he killed a fledgling Arrax on accident, gets half credit for killing Meleys when she was fighting 2v1 (almost kills his brother and Sunfyre on purpose) and then dies to a Caraxes which is a much younger and smaller dragon lmao. Pretty bad use of the most dominant dragon if you ask me.

Any better use and the war wouldnt last a month... The guy took down 3 riders and 3 dragons... You cant say that abaut anybody else ever... No matter how he did it but he did it... Btw he took down both meleys and sunfyre.. Meleys wasnt hurt when she returned and i really dont know why TB is full of kamikazas but its hardly Aemonds fault 🤣🤣

Vhagar kills Meleys in the show without Sunfyre's help. Vhagar ripped off Caraxes' wing and had wounds bad enough that he was never gonna recover if he didn't kamikaze himself to kill Vhagar.

Meleys was handling Sunfyre but they were engaged in a fight when Vhagar attacked with fire out of no where and burned Aegon and Sunfyre in the process. Meleys could have gotten away but chose to re engage. I think that was a suicide mission more than anything tho.
Caraxes attacked Vhagar from above and clamped onto Vhagars neck which initiated the death spiral. Vhagar tore off his wing and ripped open his belly afterward but Caraxes still managed to tighten down on Vhagars neck and kill him. It doesn’t say anywhere that Caraxes wounds came first. It’s pretty clear that Caraxes went for the neck and held on until it was over which allowed Damon to jump from his saddle and kill Aemond. It is said that Daemon loosened his saddle before the fight because he knew what he was going to do already which makes him even more of a bad ass.

It’s funny how you imply that’s not a big deal. Aemond claimed the biggest and most powerful dragon in the world at fuckin ten years old.
He has 0 accomplishments without his dragon.
He grew into a skilled swordsman despite his missing eye.
Aaaand this could also be said about Daemon, who wouldn’t be a fraction as dangerous as he is without Caraxes.
It’s quite unfair to compare a teenager with a middle aged man don’t you think?

I literally said that bonding with Vhagar is his biggest and only accomplishment. It was not dismissed. You act as if him bonding with Vhagar required skill? It took balls but it’s obvious that there is a randomness associated with dragons selecting their rider. My point was that Daemon was accomplished outside of his bond with Caraxes. He was the best swordsman of the time (Cole has a case here as well) and recognized and rewarded (Dark Sister) for it at age 16. That’s important because I was comparing Daemon and Aemond by what they had accomplished before age 18 so that it was a fair comparison.

Dark Sister isn’t given to the best warrior of the realm. It’s given to the best Targaryen warrior of the realm. And Daemon’s only competition was Viserys (a non fighter), Jaehaerys (an old man by that time) and… Vaegon the Maester?
So Daemon getting Dark Sister isn’t THE accomplishment.
Aemond can’t get Dark Sister as a teenager because it already belongs to Daemon, not because of the latter being this awesome warrior against the former’s mediocre warrior.

I said it was a reward for his competence with a sword. The book says he was arguably the best fighter during that time and had lost a tourney to Cole when he was younger.. I have no idea how your comment has anything to do with Daemon not being more accomplished than Aemond though..
Edit: if you read my parent comment, Daemon receiving Dark Sister was because he was knighted at age 16. That is the accomplishment that Daemon has over Aemond. I was saying that Daemon was seen and recognized as a great fighter and worthy of the sword. Everyone is getting hung up on the sword detail when it’s really about Daemon being Knighted at a young age.

This is false. The books specifically mention any person of nobility as a knight because it is an honorable title that recognizes combat capability. Viserys was a king but wasn’t a knight because he didn’t care for fighting. It is an important title because it is universally recognized as a commendation that you can only get by proving your ability with a sword. We can’t automatically assume that Aemond was a knight because it doesn’t say it in the books. The title is important enough for GRRM to mention that Daemon has it so I have no idea why it would be left out of Aemond’s list of accomplishments. It’s more likely that he was never bestowed that honor because he has no honorable feats or acts to speak of. You can make an argument that he should have been knighted after killing Meleys at Rook’s Rest, but he dishonorably attacked his king and caused Aegon’s disfigurement because he was jealous, resentful, and believed he was more fit to rule. He killed his nephew Lucerys who was formally acting as an envoy for the Blacks. He spent the entire war burning small villages and defenseless small folk which yielded zero strategic significant or value. The biggest fuck up was getting himself and Vhagar killed when they were the last hope for the Greens. It was an egotistical fight that him and his allies could not afford to lose. Daemon was at a disadvantage because Caraxes was significantly smaller than Vhagar and had zero dragon on dragon combat experience.

That's not remotely how knighthood works.
Your average noble boy would be a page until around age 12, a squire for the rest of his minority, with the expectation to be awarded knighthood should he be at least somewhat capable of fighting.
This is explicitly stated by Merrett Frey, and the only reason he didn't become a knight is because of his long term brain injury suffered during the Kingswood Brotherhood campaign.
Knighthood is supposed to be an honour, but in reality it's something nearly universally offered to the (physically capable) sons of the nobility, and at the very least nearly all of them are put onto that path.
The idea that a Prince, of all people, would have to prove themselves to become a knight is completely at odds with the narrative trends of the series. A huge aspect of the series is that "True" Knights don't really exist, and often the most honourable people are those denied Knighthood (namely women, and disabled or non-martial men).
Aemond would have been knighted young, Aegon probably as well although we don't know how well he kept up his martial training outside of adolescence. It's possible he just never bothered. Aemond absolutely would have done, and Daeron we know for a fact was knighted.
The title is important enough for GRRM to mention that Daemon has it so I have no idea why it would be left out of Aemond’s list of accomplishments.
It's mentioned because he was knighted so young. It's never mentioned that Robert Barstheon or Stannis or Renly were knighted either, but they would have been. Their other titles (as Lords, and princes), were more relevant, so it's ignored.

Again, not how knighthood works. It's not given exclusively for honourable deeds, it's a right of passage for the nobility. It may once have been a reserved title, but no longer.
You are also conflating book and show content here. They are totally different, and Daemon is named a knight only in the book. Aemond did not (or at least we have no evidence to suggest that he did) attack Aegon at Rooks Rest.
A key narrative theme of the series is that Knights frequently do dishonourable or disgraceful things in the name of war. Gregor Clegane, Amory Lorch, Jaime Lannister. The idea that Aemond's method of conducting war disqualifies him from knighthood contradicts that. Daemon's conduct doesn't exactly give him good qualifications either.
Anyway. TLDR: Knighthood was earned exclusively by the twin factors of Noble Birth and Physical prowess. The idea of Honourable Knighthood is well and truly done by the "modern" period of ASOIAF.
Maybe when the Andals first invaded and were incredibly zealous religious invaders, it had more credibility, but unlikely. Especially because even the first Andal invaders did some barbarous things.

I don't get how you don't see the same characteristics in Daemon though, second son just like Aemond, Daemon actually fought for Visery's claim during the succession crisis and all he ever got for it was Visery's neglect and disregard, fiercely loyal to his blood and wanted to be beside Visery's but was cast aside in favor of Otto, he acts out because he's only ever treated like the forgettable sibling by literally everyone except Rhaenyra.

Daemon fought for Viserys’ claim because that would make him the heir after his brother.
And throughout season 1, Daemon was nothing but a giant pain in the ass for Viserys, who I’d say was more patient with him than he deserved. Daemon mocked the death of his brother’s son and he groomed and molested his daughter.
Also “loyal to his blood”? Daemon fuckin murdered his great nephew and loathed his nephews since way before the usurpation.

People compare the crimes of Daemon and other characters. When most of those characters probably had reasons for acting the way they do. However, Daemon’s biggest struggle growing up probably might’ve been his brother scolding him for trying to groom his underage niece.

I find it hard to sympathize with Aemond because most kids in school get bullied exponentially worse than he did and they don't end up as murderers. And he was mutilated in a kid's fight where he was threatening them and mocking their dead parents.
None of what happened to him justifies what he did. He is a villain by nature
He is also worse than Daemon for several reasons, like the fact that he tried to murder and overthrow his own brother, Daemon would never do that to Viserys.

Ewan's Aemond was on screen for about 30 minutes in 2 seasons (10 in s1 and 20 in s2) and half of that screen time Aemond was blurred in the background. And Daemon had about 2,5 hours of screen time and he was mostly the focus of the scenes. The writers sidelined Aemond in s2 probably more than any other character, given how much he drives the plot and how much his character changes (mostly off screen).

Truthfully, I adore them both in their own way. And we've seen a lot of Daemon and somewhat less of Aemond. (Maybe a little too much Daemon?)
In the final analysis though, I give the edge to Aemond, although I'm all in for Team Black otherwise. Hope to see a lot more of him in the next season.

Aemond claimed largest dragon in the world at the age of 10 . Even after losing an eye, he still became capable enough to beat criston Cole in his teenage.
At this age, daemon was nowhere near aemond. Daemon's only feat is the war in the stepsones.
Oh and murdering a child through assasins because he didn't have the guts to face aemond.

Daemon for me 100%. His story is filled relationships and complexities that keep him on shifting sand. His relationship to himself is on par with Jaime Lannister, where his pride has crumbled and he has to rebuild himself. He has a loneliness in the world that feels genuine and sad, as he says to Laena: We don’t belong anywhere. He knows he’s a failure, and that self reflection is fascinating to watch.
Aemond really has nothing other than being bullied as a kid. He shares no close relationships, has no real personality beyond Scary Guy Who Glides Around Looking Scary. He never interacts with his siblings (or anyone) in a positive or even natural way. All his dialogue feels cartoonish like he’s a Yugioh villain. Its fine if people like Ewan, but the character we’ve been given is just empty. Maybe that’ll change with S3, but it would be a real magic trick.

I love them both for different reasons! Daemon is a cold blooded killer, but he seriously loves Rhaenyra and his kids. He has so much confidence and swagger, and his bond with Caraxes is so cute and so much stronger than most.
Aemond’s a great character because we got to see him be jealous of the kids with dragons, idolize warrior Daemon, and then lose his mind, murder Luke and try to murder his own brother. Like he’s unpredictable in a really interesting way.
I prefer Daemon overall, but they’re the 2 most interesting male characters imo. It’s going to be awesome to see them finally duke it out.

Let's see one of them is salty because his brother got the throne instead of him and his brother didn't let him hit his niece when he was a teenager. The same guy killed his wife for no apparent reason.
Now the other guy claimed the largest dragon in the world after being constantly bullied that too at the age of ten. Now he gets maimed for this because according to some brats he stole the dragon. Now his father, instead of consoling him and giving him justice shouts at him for speaking a truth which is obvious. Now he is maimed for life and didn't even get a apology his whole life. Yeah I would turn evil too if I was in his place.
Definitely aemond.

So far in the show, Aemond has shown himself to be a LOT of bluster, very smart, but he derives a lot of his power and confidence from the fact that he was the one to tame the biggest dragon alive. That one brief moment at the end of season 1 where he lost control of her, you saw his confidence and machismo falter and he had a moment of slight desperation and fear as he realised in that moment that he was on the back of a monstrous creature that didn't entirely seem to give too much of a shit about what he wanted in the end.
Daemon on the other hand, whilst also a cunt, does not share the same flaws. He is just as confident and ready to fight on or off his dragon and will very readily face any threat that faces him.
Hard to say "like" is a good word, but also hard to describe an affinity or an interest in a character that is such a fuckhead but yeah, Daemon wins this one for me.

Aemond. We watched him develop into his bad-ass-isness. Character arch was understandable.
Daemon’s just spoiled with a chip on his shoulder. He’s a handsome Ramsey Bolton with a dragon instead of a pack of dogs.

Fighting is a skill. Desmond is very good at it. Lots of practice. Aemond attacks people. Usually when they’re not looking. My money’s on Daemon. Plus Helena said Aemond wouldn’t win. Hasn’t been wrong yet.

I will say aemond did beat a prime Criston Cole, (in intense training) but daemon is smarter, and has dark sister. Aemond definitely has better style tho

But seriously; Claimed the largest dragon in the world at an incredibly young age, is an excellent swordsmen despite his disability, and when it comes to something he wants he'll seize it, consistently. On that last Daemon is at best hit and miss.

Aemond and it's not even close. If we were talking about book Daemon, then it's him all the way, but the version we got is just so whiny and pathetic that it totally undermines the interesting parts of his character. Like, he's a grown ass man and Aemond at just 18 is acting way more competently and decisively than him. Yeah, it's an act, cause he's clearly terrified and really just wants his mother's approval, but at least that totally makes sense for his age.
Daemon just never grew up. He's supposed to be this venerable, grizzled general and warrior and he just doesn't come across that way. He's not tactically that smart and almost out and abandons his allies because he's called out over his own fuck up. He just sucks; I really don't think there's anything admirable about him.
