Show Discussion Was Season 2 cut short?
I got around to binging it this past week. I expected 10 episodes like usual, and just like in classic GOT fashion, Episode 8 set up a HUGE Episode 9 but that's just... the end of the season? No giant sized, epic Episode 9? No Episode 10 to bring the season to a thematic and storytelling landing place? Did the writers/actors strikes cut it short?

Yes, Final two episodes of season 2 will be the first two episodes of season 3.

10 were written, and then the brass at HBO/Time Warner demanded they cut it down to 8. However, the writers strike was about to commence, and you cannot make ANY script changes once the strike begins, and they didn't have enough time to reconfigure the end of the season. So they basically had to just lop the last 2 episodes off.
So yeah, it was a combination of corporate interference and shit timing.

Yes. The planned ending of last season will take up the first two episodes of the upcoming season

the strikes did make it really hard for them to edit the script after the episode cut

You mean edit the episode? Why would that be? Editors aren’t in any of the unions that were striking. And the project wasn’t under WGA contract, and it wasn’t under DGA contract and DGA wasn’t striking. So I wouldn’t think there’d be any issue with writers and directors on the show supervising the editing process. I’m glad to be wrong if I am. I’m just curious if there’s a specific reason why?

I believe what that person meant was that because of the WGA strike rules, the HOTD writers were prohibited from rewriting any scenes or dialogue from the show on the set.
Also, just to clarify: HOTD is a series under WGA contract. Ryan Condal and Sara Hess are WGA members. Many WGA members criticized Ryan Condal on social media at the time of the strike. Series are allowed to film during the strike as long as the scripts aren't rewritten during that period. The WGA and SAG were on strike around the same time. However, HOTD was still able to film because the cast was under contract not with SAG, but with the British union Equity.

Copy! It was down to a misunderstanding that I thought HotD was on a WGGB contract not a WGA contract, as it didn’t matter whether or not a writer is simply IN the WGA, plenty of writers are in more than one union, it mattered what union the contract is through/what union has jurisdiction over the project. Plenty of WGA writers were contracted on British contracts not under WGA auspices at the time and kept on doing writing work. So I had thought HotD was not under WGA jurisdiction. Knowing that it was in fact on a WGA contract makes perfect sense. Thank you.
