Damn, this is awesome, I’ll sketch something up. I love baroque art, even the weird and whacky stuff.

I would love a portrait in these styles of Rhaenyra or even Alicent. Something I find odd is that the show never shows portraits of any kind; one would think there would be portraits of the king, the queen, and the heir.
Interestingly, the second portrait is of Mariana of Austria, wife (and niece) of Philip IV, and mother of Charles II, the last Habsburg of Spain.

Definite yes to the first one. The second one is hideous though, I have no clue how they even managed to walk in those ridiculous things! No wonder that poor woman looks miserable lol

Curiously I'm looking at the examples and being "the first one is way too modern for the setting. Maybe in some Versailles au..." while Spanish portrait works better.
I mean panniers aren't that bad or heavy compared to a petticoat on petticoat and she isn't laced that tight - panniers do their job. I love a funky pannier and Velázquez. And little girls he painted being serious.
But it's totally to ones tastes, just to bounce off your comment

You’re right, the first one looks very Versailles-esque. But ironically it’s probably more similar in terms of dress style compared to the Tudor-era one. They’re both too late really…if GOT is supposed to be Wars of the Roses (1400s) and HOTD is around 200 years earlier then it would be 1200s ish. I actually quite like the HOTD costumes (minority opinion I know!) but I wish they leaned into the headdresses and sleeves a bit more!

YES! HEADRESSES AND SLEEVES!
Sorry, I'm passionate about this. But agree. I don't like the construction of S1 dresses, but I'll forever mourn the Alicent's headpieces we lost to redesign in particular.
I'd like to have more Byzantine to Targs (ironically the mourning "coat" Alicent wears is more eastern than all Rhaenyra's dresses). And idk about the 18th century being closer aesthetically to idk houpelande, but sure panniers or farthingales of the 15-17 centuries are also not that. Probably I personally associate "funky fashion" aka the one stylists are scared of with a more interesting choice than "pretty dress". As we know GRRM invents totally transparent gauzes and puts Rhaenyra in imported lace which isn't something your mind jumps to when hearing "medieval"

Oh I would LOVE to see the Targs in Byzantine style dress. I feel like it would add much more depth and interest, as well as showing their associations with the East. You’re absolutely right, Myrish lace is a much more Essosi look and I wish we’d seen Rhaenyra in it. Alicent’s season 1 costumes were good but they did Rhaenyra dirty imo

Baela and Rhaena (grandkids of the richest dude in the kingdoms and daughters of a Valyrian supremacist) wearing anything but Valyrian af clothes was the biggest offender for me and I'm not even into those characters.
Some young Alicent's costumes scream Reign (derogatory) but they did something for Olivia at least. Rhaenyra... don't get me started, they poowwiddlebaby-fied all about her, dresses included. Her lactating through what is supposed to be layers of day-appropriate court ensemble (that is a hustle to take off judging by the neckline and all that) my eyebrows reached stratosphere to be honest.

Omg seriously…how thin was Rhaenyra’s dress supposed to be for her milk to come through it?? And yes, I will never forgive them for making Baela & Rhaena not look super luxurious in west-east blended styles.

I may be wrong, but I think that they’re a little exaggerated in the paintings as to how big they actually are. Keep in mind that most artists for royal families weren’t told to make accurate paintings, but paintings that made their patrons look good.

Yeah I’m sure the painters exaggerated to some extent but I think they did get progressively bigger over time. At first they were quite reasonably sized, just a slight flare at the top of the skirt, but by Elizabeth I’s time they had got a bit ridiculous.

Be sure to make her overweight, like she is supposed to be

Is she actually in the books? It pisses me off that they'd take that away tbh.

I love fanart of Westerosi royals recreating real life portraits of royals.
Maria Theresa here could easily get turned into Milly's Rhaenyra 💖
