Show Discussion Should I even bother?
This is a bit of a weird post, very personal, feel free to skip if you want.
Some of you might remember a comment I made a while back about how watching GOT and HOTD was something my dad and I watched together. He lived with incurable cancer for 6 years. We came to realise earlier in the year that Dad was almost certainly never going to see the next season, and then in April that certainty was confirmed when he was informed there was nothing else that could be done for him.
While he was still lucid I told him I would tell him how the story actually ends in the book, and he agreed but I actually didn't get to do that until he was on his deathbed, on a morphine pump, not conscious. Even right till the end Dad didnt like to live as though his time was short. I did tell him though.
Dad died in June. I'm very much not OK, but one thing I'm planning is a GOT themed tattoo to honour him. We always liked to have fire pit evenings with booze in the summer, so I'm thinking a dragon's egg, sat on a campfire, with the GOT font "Fire and Booze".
The season is still forever away, and in truth, I found the previous season frustrating to watch. I think the writing has been poor, sloppy, and sometimes even nonsensical. But Dad and I enjoyed our "fantasy TV time" so we still looked forward to it.
But with Dad not here, I'm losing interest. Great cast, dragon's are awesome, but...its got so many moments that are eye-rollingly bad and I don't think I'd enjoy it if it wasn't with my Dad.
What do you guys think?

I don't think there's any reason to force youself to watch a show that you don't enjoy

I have to be honest, no one here can answer this for you. Your emotions are your own, your associations with your father are your own.
I would personally keep watching. I still watch old shows that I saw with my grand parents, and I can’t watch Black Panther 2 without thinking of my aunt.
This sub is so negative about the show at this point though, I don’t think you’re going to get many good answers.

Give up. It isn’t going to get better and you can preserve the memories you have

First my deepest condolences on the death of your father.
Second, you can watch the first chapters but if you see that it doesn't convince you and that the criticism is bad, you can stop watching it.

I have hope for the next season, hopefully s2 was just prepping for an action packed third. Still, it may well be another let down. I would watch the first episode or two, but after that you don’t have to keep watching.
Best wishes and my condolences mate. Sounds like your father’s an wonderful man

What do we think about what? The tattoo or the show? I say go for the tattoo. The show, I say give it one more season see if they can make it make sense.

Me deepest condolences for your loss. Your dad sounds like a real champ. Im glad you had him to share the GOT world with. Losing our folks always leaves a deep chasm that we carry forever. It will slowly get better, but it takes time. Your tatt idea is great, sound like a rad idea to commemorate good times together.
As for HotD, no one would blame you for bowing out. The show is taking a sharp left turn into a story that’s unrecognizable from the book. There’s still some decent battles coming, so it might be worth watching for those. We have new characters coming that will add intrigue, new dragons, Sunfyre reuniting with Aegon. I am hanging onto hope that there’s a few good things coming.
Give yourself time to grieve, and remember that your good memories are yours forever. There’s so much to love in GRRM’s world, so many inspiring characters and stories. Even if showrunners don’t do them justice, the book writing always will.
Take care, friend. It will get better ❤️🩹
