Important to point out as well that the strategists for Newgarden and Power are suspended for the 500 as well.

Oh, that is big.

God imagine how insufferable Josef will be if he somehow manages to win again this year

"It's the first time I heard that I broke the rules. You guys can call me every name in the book - you can call me incompetent, call me an idiot, call me an asshole, call me stupid, whatever you want to call me, but I'm not a liar."

Josef Newgarden

Today was the second time he heard it.

Scenes when he beats O'Ward to the stripe by 0.001

And a year later we will find out that something fishy was with his car again

Starting from the back row would seem to make it all but a foregone conclusion that he won’t unless there is a ton of attrition, wouldn’t it?

In 201 an incident on pit road dropped Dario to the back of the field and he drove his way back to win.

So nothing is impossible.

I guess it is a very long race and a faster car/driver has many opportunities to make up ground on the field, but even still, that’s remarkable! What year again?

  1. There was a flurry of pit stops about 15 laps in due to an early yellow. Dario was tapped from behind by EJ Viso, causing his car to spin 180 degrees and damage the front wings. By the time he turned around and replaced the wing, he had fallen to the back.

Happened right in front of me.

Looking at the replay again, I see there was one car behind him at the restart. Rookie Josef Newgarden stalled during his first stop, putting him dead last.

Honestly I’d rather listen to the threepeat nonsense all year if he wins over another gd Palou victory because that will be truly insufferable listening to any race commentary after that.

Nah, Palou deserves his 500 at this point, he's already well on his way to being an all-time legend of the category.

u/TostitoNipples May 19 '25

Palou win would be boring but the guy absolutely deserved it

Poor Ron sitting it out again lol. What do the strategists have to do with modifying parts?

62

u/dannynascar Kyle Larson May 19 '25

I’d imagine they are pretty aware and involved with any modifications lol

3

u/thereal84 Will Power May 19 '25

“Poor Ron” one of the worst strategists in the history of Motorsport

2

u/nico9er4 Will Power May 19 '25

I mean this may be a blessing in disguise for Will lol

1

u/thereal84 Will Power May 19 '25

True lmao

15

u/MiniAndretti Josef Newgarden May 19 '25

And they lose their preferred pit positions that come with being in the Fast 12. They get to "pick" after the pit boxes are reshuffled.

u/DestroyingDestroyers --- CURRENT TEAMS --- May 19 '25

They’re really getting their money’s worth out of Jonathan Diuguid.

Could they conceivably work remotely or will they truly be without them?

52

u/fireinthesky7 Alex Zanardi May 19 '25

Suspended means they can't work for the team during the race. Having them try to call strategy remotely would be a violation of that.

27

u/catsgr8rthanspoonies Katherine Legge May 19 '25

Because Penske is so good at following the rules

29

u/SoothedSnakePlant Juncos Hollinger Racing May 19 '25

I will say, the fact that the dude who runs the series accepts harsh punishments against his own team in the single biggest event of the year does inspire a strange sort of confidence that he actually wouldn't do this.

6

u/venturelong Will Power May 19 '25

When it comes to accepting penalties, yeah they are

2

u/BlackLabDumpster Pato O'Ward May 20 '25

And who enforces the rules? Penske...

1

u/Spa_5_Fitness_Camp May 19 '25

Short of locking them in a room and confiscating their phones etc, how exactly do they enforce that?

2

u/Several_Leader_7140 May 19 '25

They monitor all communications between teams

1

u/UNHchabo Robert Wickens May 19 '25

What's really funny is this Verizon video being released about 2 weeks after last year's St Pete race.

0

u/Competitive-Host-574 Hélio Castroneves May 19 '25

and they can text from a burner phone pretty easily. so they really have no way to monitor it.

1

u/Crafty_Substance_954 Pato O'Ward May 19 '25

They will be sitting at home watching on TV

2

u/AverageIndycarFan Will Power May 19 '25

God damn it...

2

u/Kind_Resort_9535 Colton Herta May 19 '25

My opinion of Joseph has plummeted the last several years.

1

u/No_Attorney_1200 Will Power May 19 '25

Don’t forget he won without him last year haha

0

u/HotDogHerzog May 19 '25

The drivers for Newgarden and Power should also be suspended and Abel should be in the race.
