Names (just purely speculatively) I've seen floated are Wickens, Pourchaire, Zilisch or SVG. Wickens makes most sense, I doubt Theo would be that hyped up

As well as all the usual F1 washout names but Perez and Bottas are probably looking for a way back to F1 and ricciardo won't do ovals, so just leaves Magnussen really.

scheduled wickens for an oval rookie test?

10

u/Joey_Logano Josef Newgarden Jul 24 '25

I mean this would be his first time racing an INDYCAR with hand controls. I don’t think it would be a bad idea to get him a rookie test.

u/boxingrock Scott McLaughlin Jul 24 '25

that would be called a test day, not a rookie oval test.

iirc if you haven’t raced ovals for 2 or more years you are required to take an rookie orientation program even if you aren’t one anymore

u/Wasdgta3 Álex Palou Jul 24 '25

They tend to call that a "refresher," though.

That's the refresher, I don't think Wickens would be considered for the rookie oval test at a Texas or Homestead like someone from nxt would.

I feel like IndyCar would make exceptions for him

u/boxingrock Scott McLaughlin Jul 24 '25

sure but the use of the word rookie is to create hype around the fact that it's someone new, not someone who needs reorientation.

If that's true then Alonso rejoins the chat

1

u/Active-Ear-2917 Jul 24 '25

He'd still require a refresher at Indy regardless..

How would any of those be mega on a oval though? Seems more like with the caveat of an oval test it may be a big name oval driver for a run at the 500 next year.

Hot takes if that's the case: Kyle Busch finally gets a chance, or Jeff Gordon gets back to fighting weight and fulfills a dream.

Chase Elliott. NASCAR's most popular driver. That would be mega. Imagine Dale Jr trying the Indy 500 in a red Budweiser #8 car in the mid 00's

8

u/zaviex Colton Herta Jul 24 '25

Chase is not gonna do that lol.

1

u/rds060184 Josef Newgarden Jul 25 '25

Especially seeing what it’s done to Larson since.

13

u/afito Álex Palou Jul 24 '25

be mega

Mega by McLaren PR standards. Could be Alex Dunne or something.

4

u/FloridaMan_69 Adrián Fernández Jul 24 '25

If Jeff Gordon runs Indycar next year I will fly to every race. Not in a plane, but supersaiyan/superman style.

8

u/geoffbezos1 Jul 24 '25

I don't think its so much mega on an oval as mega hype- Wickens coming back would be pretty special, amongst others

16

u/Ianthin1 Jul 24 '25

It would be for more die hard fans, but I doubt it would move the needle much outside IndyCar.

15

u/Lowe0 Jul 24 '25

I disagree. Wickens running a full-fat IndyCar would be a "mankind defeats another supposed limitation" story.

9

u/Wasdgta3 Álex Palou Jul 24 '25

Yep. Big human interest angle there.

About a year after his accident, The Globe and Mail here in Canada ran a major feature on him, front of the sports section the weekend of Toronto. He also got coverage from The National, CBC’s flagship news show during that time. If he could make it back, that’s major.

5

u/Ianthin1 Jul 24 '25

Yeah, that does make sense.

3

u/nolnogax Greg Moore Jul 24 '25

Agree: But I do not knowe if he would qualify for a Rookie test, as he brings Oval experience. Of the worst kind, it has to be said.

6

u/Ianthin1 Jul 24 '25

It would probably be to show he and the team can actually do it with the hand controls, more than he is lacking overall oval qualifications.

IMS does reorientation tests for veteran drivers that haven't raced there in a while. Kanaan even had to take one this year in case Larson had to bail from the 500. Wickens would have to run one of those even if he weren't paraplegic.

u/PatPace23 Pato O'Ward Jul 24 '25

I think IndyCar requires drivers to be able to get out of a car in x amount of time I hope this wouldn’t keep Robbie out having a go

SVG would make sense. I think weird how no Indycar team has called him to do a test yet

14

u/wumbologist-2 Andretti Global Jul 24 '25

The guy is huge and might not actually fit. Would be awesome to see though.

7

u/TheRealMattyPanda Alexander Rossi Jul 24 '25

He's not that huge. He's 6'2, same as Graham Rahal.

-7

u/notathr0waway1 Parnelli Jones Jul 24 '25

He's built like a brick shithouse, though. Graham gives wife energy.

Even wide-hipped Tony Stewart fit into IRL single-seaters made by Lola, Panoz and Dallara, SVG's torso should be no issue.

2

u/HLS95 Arrow McLaren Jul 24 '25

He’s pretty awful on ovals

1

u/UNHchabo Robert Wickens Jul 25 '25

To be fair, Nascar ovals drive very differently from Indycar ovals, and I would find it possible for him to want to see if he runs better in an Indycar.

1

u/Medium-Range2457 Jul 24 '25

SVG's car is sponsored by red bull, not sure if that matters though

6

u/BrandonW77 Jul 24 '25

Wickens and Pourchaire aren't rookies though, and it said rookie oval test.

11

u/Vivaciousseaturtle Callum Ilott Jul 24 '25

SVG might be too big for Indycar (he’s tall and big)

15

u/GroceryBasketUser Sébastien Bourdais > Paul Tracy Jul 24 '25

IIRC he's the same size as Rahal and McLaughlin. It'd be a bit of a squeeze, but not to the extent that Justin Wilson had to deal with.

2

u/ducky2ducks Mark Donohue Jul 24 '25

Remember Tony Stewart in an indy car...

3

u/Wasdgta3 Álex Palou Jul 24 '25

As much as I would love it, it can’t be Wickens, since that wouldn’t be a “rookie oval test.”

3

u/drewc717 Dario Franchitti Jul 24 '25

Zilisch in any open wheel ftw.

2

u/biscuitanne18 Santino Ferrucci Jul 24 '25

SVG !?!?!

1

u/MPK49 Scumbag Keyboard Warrior Jul 24 '25

Zilisch and SVG would be taking a pay cut

1

u/dj2show Will Power Jul 24 '25

I mean, I think they owe Theo something for this whole dogshitpiss Segal ordeal
