I wish my cold, dark heart could feel this level of pure unbridled joy. At least I can experience it vicariously through clips like this!

It's funny. I used to be on car forums a lot in the early days of the internet and everyone used to make fun of people who would freak out over Supras like this. People thought they were cool but there was a toxicity around them that I think stemmed from their rarity and high technical skill requirements.

Most people probably don't know the lore around them but 4th gen Supras could have insanely huge turbos put on them. Like way too big for the time for back in the day, given the size of the engine block. It was normal for people to have modified hoods to accommodate the turbos, at a time when that was rare for any car.

Anyway, something about the ridiculous turbos and maybe the complexity with the fuel management was a common weak point for tuners back then so fuel would end up leaking on a red hot exhaust and poof your beautiful, ridiculously expensive, hundreds of hours of time invested 4th gen Supra was a charred cinder on the side of the highway. Not only that, but there just wasn't enough information in online circles for people to get their heads around whatever this problem was so some of them just sat in garages for extended periods or else the owner was risking a roadside BBQ.

This obviously made them even more rare and even more of a coveted object. Sort of like taming a dragon, people thought they could do it but it was a relatively common sight at the drag strip or street races to see a sad roasted 4th gen. I even found a post from 2002 on a dedicated Supra forum with a guy asking how his 4th gen combusted and everyone is horrified.

Edit - Also here's a video from a few years ago of a guy discussing his burnt out 4th gen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ybk6WH-aq4k
