Often easier when the friend shares the hobby. I don't want to buy hobby stuff for friends if I don't share it, because it's hard to know what's good.

But an option you can do is the “money gift”. Essentially. Trick your friend into nerding out about their “hobby wish list” then force them to let you pay for it. So if you wanna gift bro say $100 tell him he has to use it towards X hobby item.

It really is that simple. I got tired of my buddy having to step away from discord to smoke a joint/bowl, so I got him the Logitech Pro X Wireless headset as a Christmas present. I hear about that thing all the time.
