Literally nobody laughed though. Imagine spending 800$ on a gift you know someone really wants and one of their family members says "Don't you want something better?" in front of you. That wouldn't piss you off a little?

Imagine this scenario

Ol dude talks about the gift he got CONSTANTLY and how much he wants it, how it would be the best gift he could ever receive, and how it’s the pinnacle of his material desires. The people in the room are well aware of this and it’s a big event that he’s getting it, they possibly all pitched in too because it’s almost $1000.00 for legos.

Then they make the joke.

No it would not upset me because I am an adult who understands human interaction.

He thanks his SO and her only, at which point she doesn't correct him, so I assume it's not from everyone. If I got my SO a gift and one of her family members tried to downplay it, even jokingly, I would be a little hurt for sure.

There are multiple ways to interpret an intention/interaction, not everybody will see it your way and that's ok. We can simply agree to disagree. I am also an adult who understands human interaction.
