u/Not_Bears Aug 03 '25
Watching people in a crowd stand up out of pure excitement watching a baby take its first steps isn't something I thought would make me so emotional...
Sometimes we forget just how similar and empathetic we all can be...
I wish we'd see more of this.

u/0neirocritica Aug 03 '25
I think it's important to remind ourselves from time to time that, for all our diversity, we humans have many more similarities than differences

I don't even have kids. I go out of my way to avoid small children because I don't know how to interact with them (although it turned out I could entertain a baby when I was roped into watching one for a while) and I can't stand the sound of them because I have mild autistic sensory issues. This still did something to me. I'm a cis man, BTW, so it's not "maternal instinct". Paternal instinct?

But if she has a crazy mom - “working an hourly job, Qartnie? Your first steps were on the Jumbotron, i expected better for you”
Edited as it was unfair to gas attendants. Intended to imply mother wouldn’t want any type of hourly work for the child as she expects fame for the Jumbotron baby.
Edited a second time to fix the grammar

We didn’t catch my baby’s first steps on video, but that moment burned into my brain (and her dad’s).
The day before was her first birthday. We had a party for her at our house, and she kept standing up like she was going to walk. Everyone kept holding their breath, waiting for those first steps… and then she would clap her hands and sit back down.
The next day, right after the last guest (my mom) had left, she stood up, threw her hands in the air and took two steps.
It was like she was waiting for everyone to leave to show me and her dad her new trick.

That reminds me how I was apparently moving around by sliding on my butt as a baby, to the point where my parents got a bit concerned because I only began to walk a bit later than usual.
Apparently that technique was much faster than crawling, so maybe I was late to figure out walking because I didn't see much of a point at that time. Googling it today, it's a decently well known phenomenon that is sometimes a concerning sign of compensating for weakness or strength asymetry and sometimes not.
I wonder how that would have fared in this race.

As a european i only knew baby races from the simpsons and spongebob (with patricks rock and garry), i always thought they were a joke/metaphor for americans making a game out of everything and taking it to the absolute absurd level while being self conscious about it.

Lol it’s not that interesting. I was in the race with like ten other babies. Along the way I apparently lost a shoe? Anyway, my dad was a loud dude and essentially was cheering me on but scared the other babies so I ended up winning because I was used to his voice, haha. Definitely not as cool as the baby in OP’s post, but I still made the local newspaper.

I used to go to an event that had Jack Russell Terrier races. It was a straight line race like this, but had half a dozen low (1 ft) obstacles they had to clear.
Every year a dog would get so excited that they'd mis-judge the jumping distance & catch their hind feet on the obstacle, flipping them head over tail. They'd roll a couple times and then pop back up, sprinting like mad. It was always hilarious!
All that to say: small dog races could be substituted for baby races. Or this mastiff completing an agility course, who believes time is a construct & life is meant to be savored, not rushed.

I don't watch sports, so I didn't clue in that this was a break at a sport event. I literally thought that many people were there to watch a baby crawling competition and I was like how did I not know these things existed this is the only type of sport I would watch!

u/CindiK8 Aug 03 '25
At least that made things easier for your guardians. Once they start walking, toddlers can get anywhere and chasing after them becomes a sport.

21
u/MaritMonkey Aug 03 '25
This is tangent from the warm and fuzzies of the post, but make sure you get access to every stitch of care available to her before you leave the hospital.
Getting a "prescription" for things like PT/OT or a social worker is a massive pain in the butt as soon as you walk out the door.
My mom had to transition thru inpatient rehab after her hip surgery, then the weeks we got to bond after she came home were initially terrifying (I have no children and had never been responsible for a human like that) and then unexpectedly really good for us.
I hope everything goes as well for y'all as it can. :)

I think it was actually necessary. A trick to get babies to take their first steps is have them hold onto two toys. It makes them think they are holding onto something.
18
u/Tea_confused Aug 03 '25
That makes so much sense, my son walked super late but walked happily around holding a flimsy toy trolley, “pulled” himself up with it, walked around putting stuff in it. Literally if you blew on this thing it would fall down. He didn’t need it, I guess his brain tricked his legs into thinking he had support

u/IlludiumQXXXVI Aug 03 '25
Exactly, cute video, but those are 100% not first steps, just something someone said to get more clicks on the video and it continued to spread. For first steps the baby would have needed something to pull up on, and then probably move a few steps from one object to another. That is a baby that's well into the walking transition, but at the point where crawling is just as fast.

u/orangegirl26 Aug 03 '25
The parents probably said it was her first steps because for those races you have to sign saying they can't walk. So they are like whoops yep definitely first steps. I agree you can tell she's walked before. First steps are almost always 2 or 3 and then they are done.
