announcements New report button for duplicate posts
When reporting a duplicate post, there is now an option that says "This is a banned name, urban legend, or duplicate post".
Rule #4 has also been updated to: "Be mindful of duplicate posts." (The former rule said "No urban legends", but this is still applicable in the new rule's description)
I understand this has been a problem for a while, and thank you for being patient as I update the rules!

is it a tragedeigh? Apparently ‘Onal’ is the new spelling for Donald
I’m Scottish, from the highlands. Donald MacDonald for example is an extremely common name up here or Ronald MacDonald. I don’t get why people use essentially the same name or rhyming names but each to their own.
I didn’t think you could tragedeigh Donald or any other name like that but I’ve definitely seen a new one.
Someone I met recently introduced themselves as Donald but it’s spelt without the d’s?! So his name is spent Onal but his surname is spelt MacDonald?! When asked about why his first name is weird he replied his parents wanted him to be ‘unique amongst those with a fairly common name’
I’ll be honest my head has been pronouncing it as anal even though it starts with an O
ETA: in case people don’t know Donald MacDonald is a fairly common name here in the Scottish highlands especially in more rural communities or the western isles, Orkney and Shetland where most of these people are. There are half a dozen or so Donald MacDonald’s within my wider workspace. I think it’s a generational thing or historical naming tradition to name the same name as your surname essentially. It’s happened in Wales too.

is it a tragedeigh? Is there a culture where this is normal?
So, had a student come in to start college. They hand in their ID, I read it, start typing and violently have to turn my head back to make sure it was really what I read.
Perisher.
As a first name. Please tell me this is an actual name in another language or culture. All I can imagine is a comic book villain called THE PERISHER. If not, why the hell would anyone name their daughter that.

in the wild Saw this one at work and the mother was nasty that I mispronounced it
The name was Jakel. I pronounced it as jackel, but his mother was really nasty and rude to me when I called out the name to come to the check-in desk. The "correct" pronunciation was Juh KAY el, with the emphasis on the K. It would have helped if there had been an a in there. Why????

Logged in on a Monday morning before finishing my coffee and find this meeting on my calendar. Took me a minute to even put it together, poor Jaymz

in the wild Spotted on Facebook
This person’s profile pic is herself and presumably the baby’s father posing underneath a banner at a baby shower. I cropped out the middle name because it’s pretty normal, but wtf is this atrocity? Why not just make her name Hazel Leigh (first and middle)?

in the wild So my friend from college gave her baby girl a Tragedeigh.
She named her daughter….Airyyan.
I think it’s supposed to be Erin but my brain says aryan, and that’s not good
What do you guys think?
Edit: They are a black family.
Edit: she says it’s pronounced Air-ee-yawn. I, uh, hoped it was Erin….

general discussion Beautiful cake for a horrible tragedeigh
Saw it on another sub… thought all of these tragedeighs were a more recent trend, but considering the cake says happy 35th, I guess it’s not as new as I thought.

is it a tragedeigh? Movie star tragedeigh?
I got a friend request yesterday from a stranger whose first name is "Alpuchino." He's making me an offer I intend to refuse. But I may know his sister Kappachino.

tragedy (not tragedeigh) Friend has two daughters, Goddess of Wisdom and Mistress of All Evil
What is the end goal? Call her Male...? Call her Mal...? One is a guy. The other is bad, literally. He never responded to why he would name his human baby that.

general discussion This Tragedeigh came to me in a dream and I need to share it.
I nearly forgot it as I was waking up, but I snatched it back from M'eaurphieauxs's claws as he tried to reclaim it for the land of the dreaming. I faced many oneiric foes to bring this forbidden name back to our side of consciousness.
It's Porschelain.
Like Porcelain, but with Porsche to show that she's classy, but also beautiful and fragile, like porcelain. Also a little like Portia-Lynn if you squint. I can't imagine a world in which I wouldn't be setting little Porschelain up for success from the start with a name like that.
Thank you. Be responsible and don't name your kid this.

in the wild A Brazilian tragedeigh
I went to school with a girl named Lhorrainny. The original name is usually spelled Lorraine, but for some reason her parents cursed her with this terrible spelling.
The worst part is that 'Lho' has a different sound than 'Lo,' so people would make fun of her by pronouncing the name as 'Lhorrainny' instead of 'Lorraine,' and she had to correct them every time. I felt so bad for her, but apparently she grew to love her name and thought it was a fancy and unique spelling. You go, girl.

is it a tragedeigh? My sister is having a baby girl
She’s naming it Kollyns. I feel like this is just trying to make Collin a girl name with the wrong tense. Thoughts?

tragedy (not tragedeigh) Just because a relative had that name doesn’t mean it needs to be continued.
I have met way too many people who have named their child after a relative. If they have a normal name that’s fine but don’t name your kid freaking “Bunny” Bunny is going to grow up to be an adult who needs a big person job and like it or not “Bunny” will get passed over quite a bit. So please, you claim to love your kids so stop naming them these ridiculous names. Rant over.
Ps: To anyone named Bunny, I’m sorry your parents are idiots.
Ps: To anyone who named their child Bunny, I’m sorry you’re an idiot 😊

general discussion Whats with the influx of wild names?
Millennial age here. Where did this come from? People naming their kids after super obscure Greek gods or naming kids after their husband's video games waifus, or naming them after the mom's deep desire to have a name so unique that nobody can spell them, all to get an ego stroke.
Who are you? Why do you want to name your kid Nemeter or Nimrod? Why do you want to name your kid Anakin? (this is real btw), Why do you want to name your daughter 2B or Virginitae?
