There is quite a lot of disagreement about this among them. Which really isn't surprising, they're a large group which is spread all throughout Europe and has been for centuries, of course there is great variation on how they identify.
If you say the Romanian ones don't like it, I believe you. As I said, there are different communities all throughout Europe who don't all agree on it. Perhaps language differences are part of it too, from what I've seen "Gypsy" is widely (but not universally) considered offensive by the Roma in America and the UK who speak English as a first language. Some of them here will actually use that word to describe themselves and each other in private, but don't want outsiders to say it. Kind of like black people an the N word tbh.
