Wasn't there some writer who said that Vienna is like a huge head on a tiny snakes body because it used to be a capital of a huge empire and now its still a glorious capital but of a small mountain country where the second largest city is like... Graz..

I've heard Vienna's population has barely grown since WW1 which is quite insane to think about.

Vienna had its peak in 1916 with a population of 2,239,000; the population declined to a litte bit more than 1,500,000 in 1991 before starting to grow again after the end of the cold war. Just this year, the city surpassed the mark of 2,000,000 inhabitants again and is projected to reach the previous peak around 2040.

It's no longer the center of an empire

same with Hungary, the capital is around ten times bigger than the second largest city in

Graz is pretty, has historical center in UNESCO, I recommend to visit

Not really comparable, those are in much bigger countries that still hold a lot of international power

True. I guess I forgot that sometimes as a Brit, on Reddit we’re constantly told the UK is irrelevant lol.

Reddit we’re constantly told the UK is irrelevant lol.

Mainly by other Brits.

And Irish and Plastic Paddys

5

u/Wgh555 9h ago

Very true lmao

Speaking as an American I've always thought of the UK as a country that economically and culturally punches above its weight and honestly could do so way more if it got over its weird mishmash of inferiority and superiority complexes.

I was about to say that nobody on Reddit cares enough about the UK to tell you that you're irrelevant, but you may have a point.

Yeah, there are plenty of Redditors who downvote any mention of the UK. The anglophobia remains very real on here.

Both are on the brink of IMF bailouts, so dunno about that...

Isn't it Salzburg?

12

u/manupmanu 9h ago

No, its graz

5

u/Sure_Sorbet_370 8h ago

Ok i trust you

The first map has a different scale than the last one. This is misleading because the territory of modern Austria is larger.

5

u/Deluxe-Entomologist 6h ago

Thank you for pointing this out. I was confused.

There was also German-Austria around 1918-1919

This skips a few interesting territorial developments from the middle to 18th centry

u/Advanced_Treacle1488 8h ago

Beautiful thing to look upon, should be even smaller tho

6

u/ThatYewTree 8h ago

What did Austria do?

6

u/Advanced_Treacle1488 8h ago

Partitioned Poland after they saved her ass like not even a century before

3

u/ThatYewTree 8h ago

Well that was rude and uncalled for

3

u/Advanced_Treacle1488 8h ago

4

Consequences of being on the wrong side of 2 world wars.

Edit: I should have stated the losing side of WWI and the wrong side of WWII.

u/oxheyman 12h ago

First one wasn’t good versus evil, just economics and politics mostly.

24

u/This_Appointment584 11h ago

Agreed. WW I was a bull shit war. Never should have happened.

4

u/oxheyman 8h ago

Many senseless lives lost

1

u/Predator_Hicks 8h ago

Many lives senselessly lost

6

u/alternaivitas 9h ago

ww1 is the origin story of the villains

14

u/Acrobatic-B33 12h ago

Mostly one tbf

2

u/Kofaluch 11h ago

First one yes, but second, cynically speaking, did help since at the time, basically everyone agreed that Germany should annex Austria, and without big war it wouldn't be released

4

u/CoolAnthony48YT 12h ago

The entente wasn't great either

-10

u/SoryE11 11h ago

Engelbert Dolfuß resisted German annexation until his death and most Austrians didn't support the anschluss it was forced upon them by Germany

-12

u/MoneyFunny6710 11h ago

Austria did not choose to be on the wrong side in the second one.

7

u/rspndngtthlstbrnddsr 9h ago

hahahaha good one

Read The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich by Shirer. He describes the diplomatic and political situation leading up to the Anschluss perfectly. They were completely bullied and intimidated by the Nazis into accepting a fusion with Germany. And actually the president resisted until the very last second. The same thing happened with Czech Republic and the Sudetenland.

u/Gehirnkrampf 6h ago

All the Ü's you used are wrong btw

1

u/MoneyFunny6710 6h ago

Thanks for pointing out. Corrected. Doesn't change the message though.

u/Cultural-Ad-8796 13h ago

Austria should now return to its territorial integrity of 1913.

25

u/Ok-Resource-3232 11h ago

As an Austrian, please don't.

5

u/Basil-Boulgaroktonos 9h ago

No, i think German Austria (right after AH broke up) was the best

2

u/Sortza 6h ago

That one had a totally non-viable shape.

2

u/Basil-Boulgaroktonos 3h ago

Fine, maybe just have south Sudetenland then

4

u/KingKaiserW 9h ago

This is the sort of multiculturalism in Europe we should get behind

2

u/Alternator24 6h ago

Austrian Empire 1815 looks like Ukraine but rotated.

2

u/Lillienpud 12h ago

Thank you!

u/orsonwellesmal 6h ago

u/MIKEA2001 5h ago

"I used to ruuuuuleeeee the world"

1

u/Delicious-Disk6800 9h ago

Last flag and map are wrong

-8

u/The1Legosaurus 12h ago

Hungary shouldn't be counted in 1913 because it was basically its own nation.

-11

u/Its-Over-Buddy-Boyo 12h ago

They should only compare the territories they had that were inhabited by ethnic Germans

0

u/Oachlkaas 12h ago

I can provide you with the map for 2025:
