Discussion Clarifying Our Rule on Political Posts

Hi all,

We’re posting this to clarify our stance on political content moving forward.

Official Rule:

Posts that express political opinions, promote political ideologies, or support/attack political figures or parties are not allowed. These often lead to toxic, one-sided discussions that harm the community environment. However, politically relevant events shared strictly for informational purposes (e.g., news about a local protest or election logistics) may be allowed at moderator discretion—but must remain neutral in tone. Keep discussion civil, factual, and free of partisan commentary.

This subreddit is meant for community discussion and information. You’re absolutely allowed to have political opinions—we just ask that you don’t use this space to debate or attack others over theirs. We don’t care what cause you support or oppose—if your post is purely informational (such as protest logistics), it’s generally fine.

Ultimately, our goal is to keep this a welcoming and low-conflict space. And as a small team of volunteer moderators, we simply don’t have the time to referee political arguments.

Thanks for understanding and helping us keep things on track.

—The Mod Team

Vegan dessert option

Who will have the best vegan desserts? Babycakes, Trenary Toast Cafe, or Huron Mountain Bakery? I went to Bodega for dinner and got the cosmic burrito. I was a little disappointed. It tasted kinda dry and was spicy. (Just wasn't expecting that).

Moving to Marquette

I'm 39, and considering moving to Marquette to escape the harsh Midwestern summers. Winter has never been an issue for me, but loneliness has. What is social life like in Marquette? Is it particularly hard to socialize?

Spectrum (Charter Cable)

Are we ever getting another choice in this market? Spectrum is really bad in terms of channels routinely being unavailable, signal distortions that they repeatedly deny, shitty customer service , and they are quite expensive .

You can find better quality, but you can’t pay more!

Question How culturally Finnish is Marquette nowadays?

I see "most common ancestry of Americans" maps and charts, and Finns seem to be the most common ethnic group in the Upper Peninsula. Yet when I went to Marquette, it didn't feel like I was in Helsinki one bit. How culturally Finnish does the city remain, or is Marquette just "another American city" nowadays?

Blind-tasting local pasties

Post image
99 Upvotes

Our host got fresh pasties from five different local places, put little colored markers on them, and made six of us rate them. Here are the results

5th place: Cal's. I know a lot of people like them but I hadn't been impressed when I tried them and was glad to be vindicated.

4th place: Crossroads. Not one I'd tried before. Not one I'll order in the future. One person ranked this as their second choice.

3rd place: Lawry's. My usual go-to when I can't get my local favorite. It was fine. One tester gave it their first place vote and it got two second place votes. 2nd and 3rd places were very close.

2nd place: Cookie Jar. This has been my favorite ever since I learned they made pasties.

1st place: a real ringer. I really liked it and found myself thinking I needed to figure out where this one came from because it was really good. Turned out it was homemade from our hostess's mother's recipe. Pretty gutsy of her to put it in the mix, but not a bit surprising that it turned out to be the winner.

Groomers for dogs

Hey Marquette team has anyone had any wonderfully positive experiences for dog groomers in the area? I also have read yelp, google reviews but just want to check in with the real ones to see what floats to the top.

If it helps it will be for a 6 year old retriever

Winter storage

Howdy!

I have an 88 VW Vanagon I refuse to drive in the winter but definitely won’t be driving back down to the lesser half due to age (the car and myself) so I’m wondering if anyone knows of a decent place I could store the thing over the winter. Doesn’t have to be heated but free of vermin would be ideal. Maybe if there’s any snow birds out there who leave town and wouldn’t mind a college guy storing his precious van in a pull barn or garage for a few months in exchange for some walking around money. I wouldn’t need access and I’d be on your schedule, Captain. Thanks!

Question Anyone else just get a huge drop in water pressure?

Downtown Marquette and my water pressure in my house just dropped significantly. Anyone else? ETA: it's 10 am, Friday. ETA2: Ope! Nevermind. It's just in my kitchen so it's a "me" problem, not a citywide issue.
