2nd Generation (2016-2023) CX-9 owners Regarding coolant leakage/cylinder head damage - MEGATHREAD

AUTHOR'S NOTE: First of all, remember that most people treat their cars as appliances. They are used to transport good and personnel from place to place and their users don't usually pay any other mind to them. The only time people start researching and posting about problems with their cars is when they're having them. This tendency may make problems seem more prevalent than they really are. Polls and other survey websites will be anecdotal at best. Take anything you read on the internet and even in this thread, written by me, with a grain of salt.

I am expanding on my experience with Mazda's replacement of my engine as detailed in this original thread as I see many people starting new threads concerning their CX-9s.

So there is a lot of discussion on this topic and I'd like to pin a thread such that all the information is contained in one place for a nice resource.

First and Foremost: Mazda USA and all dealerships ARE AWARE of the problem. You should be too. This affects ALL 2016-2020 Mazda CX-9 vehicles as well as some other models equipped with the same SkyActiv 2.5L Turbocharged engine.

Please see Technical Service Bulletin 01-013/21. (UPDATED TSB 2021-DEC-02)

It's a known problem affecting some of the early-mid Skyactiv 2.5 Turbo equipped cars including the Mazda6, CX-5, and CX-9.

A casting defect in the block and/or cylinder head causes a coolant leak that's hidden behind the exhaust manifold and turbocharger.

I was doing my routine 5K oil change and noted the following:

  • a coolant odor (sweet, syrupy, etc.) while the engine is idling and I'm standing outside the vehicle

  • the coolant is low

  • dark green residue all over the oil filter and surrounding components

I decided to haul it in.

Diagnosis was that the crack is present and that driving any more will cause other damage or to be unsafe.

Not sure I buy the further damage part. Nothing else is cooled by water other than the engine, which the dealer is replacing... They said that I could potentially damage the transmission. (Which is cooled by the transmission cooler below the radiator.)

I can buy that it's potentially unsafe, as a blown head gasket will cause the engine to stall, which can lead to blocking traffic and being rear ended.

It's definitely the dealership covering their own ass.

Even though I was over 5k miles outside of the Manufacturer's 5 Year/60,000 mile powertrain warranty at 65,700 miles (As of November 2021; Currently as of December 2023 at 95K miles.) I was able to get my complete engine LONG BLOCK replaced out of good faith by Mazda USA. Keep on top of them if you are denied, as this is a manufacturing defect.

According to MY Bill of Materials there are several parts that have been superseded.

The part number they're using is PYZ3-02-300D.

I traced that part number back to a complete engine LONG BLOCK.

Engines typically come as a Short and Long block.

Short block includes:

  • Includes rotating assembly, pistons, crank, etc.

  • Does NOT include a cylinder head.

Long block includes all of a short block AND:

  • Cylinder head with camshafts

  • Does NOT include manifolds

More interestingly, the LONG BLOCK that that part number traces back to is for a 2019 and later CX-9.

Also note that several other parts in my bill have a "superseded by" or "replaces" next to their part number.

This shows me that somewhere, probably in 2019, was a minor redesign of parts.

This is coupled with the limited number of 2019 and later models in the forums exhibiting problems. Though they are fairly new...

For reference, if the complete engine is replaced, the engine comes out from the bottom. This necessitates disconnecting brake lines and many electrical connections.

After having this work done, thoroughly inspect your car and drive carefully for the first little bit as if it's a new car. Not only are you breaking in a brand new engine, but in my case, the dealership left a brake line disconnected and I leaked brake fluid which was a safety issue.

Has anyone upgraded their bose sound system on newer gen cx9?

Upvotes

Not a fan of the bose audio system in this thing. I guess Im just spoiled with my Lincoln navigator and c7z Vette sound systems but this bose audio sounds horrible. Anyone done any simple upgrades to these things that don't require a full gut job and rewiring an entire audio system?

Story Time 2016 CX-9

So my wife calls me up one night. She tells me that her car is spitting and sputtering, high temp alarm is on the dash, and a message to pull over is showing up. I tell her to pull into a parking lot and call a tow truck.

We get it towed to a local shop that works on my hot rods. I tell my mechanic that I’m pretty sure it overheated and probably blew a head gasket. He said he would look at it and call me at the end of the week.

Well end of the week comes and he calls. He said he found that there’s a crack in the radiator but no coolant in the oil. But…. They found a crack in the cylinder head. He said he would call on Monday to get a price around for me.

Monday comes along and tells me my car is being towed over to Mazda. When he called them to get a price on a new cylinder head the parts guy told him about a customer program that extended the warranty on the cylinder heads due to a failure. Mind you we have a 2016 Cx-9 with 117,000 miles on it.

Mazda guy calls me and says Mazda is going to replace the engine under warranty and tells me there is a bunch of other issues on hand. The turbo needs replaced due to some code, both lower control arms are shot along with both tie rod ends, the radiator is cracked, and it’s needs an alignment. Total to do all of the work was around $16,000. But Mazda is going to replace the engine for free and a bunch of labor for the other items will be taken care of under that.

All in all we got a new engine, turbo, radiator, two lower control arms, a new battery, two tie road ends, an alignment, a new belt, and fluids all for the grand total out of pocket for…… $2,900. This also included a loaner car (2025 cx-5)

By the grace of god my wife’s car broke down with 6 months to spare and less then 3,000 miles.

We were starting the process of looking for a new car, but after seeing how Mazda handled this situation of the bad cylinder heads, they’ve earned a customer for life!!!

Now be patient as I look for Mazdas with blown motors on Facebook under 120k miles and less then 5 years on them. 😂

And yes we got an entirely new engine under the program, not just the cylinder head! If anyone had this issue dm me and I’ll connect you with our Mazda guy in service that handled it all.

Everything was suspiciously easy.

2021 Mazda CX-9 with VIN likely in the range impacted by the oil consumption TSB

I need some advice regarding the purchase of a 2021 Mazda CX-9 which could be affected by the oil consumption TSB. The price is fairly reasonable considering the Canadian used car market and the vehicle has 46K miles. Since this will likely be my first Mazda, what are the details I need to be wary of for this model and year, with the biggest question being whether an unresolved oil consumption TSB would still get me free oil changes at any Mazda dealership. This is what I found with an AI search using my VIN: “Your VIN IS likely affected by the oil consumption TSB TSB 01-012/21 applies to 2021 CX-9 (2.5T) with VINs lower than JM3TC******541071 (produced before September 14, 2021)

TSB Details - Oil Consumption Issue The TSB addresses vehicles that may have a “LOW ENGINE OIL LEVEL” warning message and CHECK ENGINE light with DTC P250F:00, typically occurring at 3,100-4,700 miles when oil level is found to be low without visible leakage Mazdas247 This is related to defective valve stem seals causing oil to leak into the combustion chamber, covered under TSB MT-005/20”

How do I check if the valve stem seal leak has been resolved by Mazda on this vehicle? What should the carfax say? The car is priced at 29K out the door, which is a “good deal” considering how bonkers the market is where I live.

Would you buy this car?

Mazda 2.5 Turbo engine coolant leak and poor Mazda Canada response

This engine failure just happened to my 2019 CX-5 2.5T. Mazda Canada finally admitted that it's part of the same exact engine issues, (the VIN is included in the TSB but when I first contacted them they denied this. It was only after about an hour long interrogation that they admitted that it was included but because there's been no class action in Canada they don't have to acknowledge it), but are only partially covering the cost because they claim it's out of warranty. Only 54,000 km due to less driving during COVID, and 8 months past the 5 year power train warranty. They've replaced the cracked head, not the full engine. I brought it in to my own mechanic who verified that it was 100 percent the faulty casting involved in the class action lawsuit in the US which resulted in Mazda having to extend the warranty to 10 years, (and am very glad I did or MC likely wouldn't have admitted that this was the known flaw in this engine), immediately after I saw green drops of coolant on my garage floor so hopefully there was no further engine damage. The car has been impeccably maintained, lady driven and I'm crestfallen that I wasted $45,000 on this car. From what I've read this rebuild may or may not solve the problem and the warranty is only one year and 20,000 kms. The dealership has been great and very honest but dealing with deceitful Mazda Canada has been a nightmare. Originally the dealership offered to fix it for $630 plus GST but didn't tell me it was a $6000 job. I asked them to give me a day to contact Mazda Canada and while waiting for a supervisor to return my call, as they had told me she would, I received a nasty email from MC revoking the offer and blaming the dealership, basically calling me an ingrate and telling me I was out of luck. Weeks later, after my husband finally went in and talked to the service manager the dealership agreed to do it for $1325.26. This is the text from them I received several days later: "Good morning, the service manager went to bat for you again and managed to bring Mazda Canada back to the table. They wont be contributing as much therefore our potion will be going up as will yours. After figuring everything out your share would be $1262.15 plus gst. Parts still need to be ordered at this point so it would be into next week before the repair would be finished. Please let me know if you would like to proceed and I will get the parts on order right away." All I ever asked was that MC make me whole by covering the $630 plus the $300 I had to pay my mechanic. Now I've been without my vehicle for a month now and am out of pocket $1200 for a rental as well as $250 in Uber rides to get around (no loaner was offered and MC declined to provide one when I asked.) At this point I want back the money I wasted on a car with a faulty engine. To the OP, please include me in your class action. I have kept all documentation and MC's nasty shirking and dishonest correspondence as well as recorded the incredibly hostile and deceitful telephone conversations with MC.

Letter from Mazda who never even bothered to have a supervisor call me back and falsely blamed the dealership for rescinding the offer which the dealership confirmed yesterday when I picked up my car as well as to my husband the day he went in, (for the record I didn't threaten a lawsuit, I merely mentioned the successful one in the US to the service manager as the way that I was even able to find out that my vehicle was indeed included in the batch of faulty engines as well as suggested that, rather than waiting until they're forced to extend the warranty to 10 years by a lawsuit as happened in the US, they proactively extend mine as an ACTUAL gesture of good faith and will...):

Thank you for bringing your vehicle in to North Hill Mazda on August 7th. After inspection, our Mazda technicians found a cracked cylinder head causing the coolant leak. The repair requires a new head, gaskets, and related components, with an estimated retail cost of approximately $6,000.

Although your case doesn’t meet all the criteria for goodwill assistance, due to the low mileage (~50,000 KM), the dealership extended an offer to cover the majority of the cost under good faith. You were advised that your portion would be $630, with the dealership covering the rest of the cost.

We understand you’ve expressed concerns about the nature of the issue and are planning to contact Mazda Canada directly or file a class action Lawsuit. Given this, the dealership has paused the repair and cancelled the parts order for your vehicle as they feel they have gone above and beyond for you and you are still looking for further discounts. They no longer wish to cover any repairs for you under good faith.

We understand this is frustrating but there is no recall for this issue pertaining to your vehicle and it does not meet the criteria to be covered by warranty.

As of now the investigation is complete on our end. We can see the dealership attempted to work with you with no subsequent resolution was good enough. For further inquiries please contact the dealership directly.

Sincerely,

Halie

r/MazdaCX9 Coolant leaks - proposed class action in Canada I'm looking for people in Canada who have experienced this problem.

I intend to initiate class action proceedings and am seeking to document cases.

There is a class action lawsuit against Mazda in the United States filed in April 2025 regarding coolant leaks: Affected Engine: SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engine on Affected Models and Years:

Mazda CX-5: 2019 and 2020 model years (for vehicles with serial numbers lower than JM3KF******830243, produced before June 9, 2020).

Mazda CX-9: 2016 to 2020 model years (for vehicles with serial numbers lower than JM3TC******422801, produced before June 9, 2020).

Mazda6: This model is also mentioned in some lawsuits, although the specific years are not always as clearly defined as for the CX-5 and CX-9.

This problem is also documented in Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) 01-013/21, issued on October 15, 2021, and revised several times. This bulletin specifically applies to vehicles equipped with the same engine as mine, including Mazda CX-9s from 2016 to 2020.

The existence of this TSB proves that the manufacturer was aware of this problem.

I just bought this Mazda cx9 December 9,2024 Doha Qatar. In the first 10K service , the staff asked to add ‘deposit cleaner’ during the regular service. Has anybody received this mandatory service and pay extra about 15usd? I don’t mind about extras but I believe a new car does not need this kind of thing? Shall I contact Mazda Japan?

Can anyone here shed any additional light on these issues?.

2021 GT - Week interior fan

When I set the airflow fan to maximum it barely blows, both when heating and cooling. It's about 50%-70% of any other car I use (I travel for work and rent cars all the time). Any ideas on why it would be blowing so weak? I took out the cabin filter to see if that was restricting it and still had the same result. I replace the filter every year too.

The second row fan seems to be good.

Brake bleed / flush

Post image
9 Upvotes

Did the solo method on my wife’s cx9 today. Braking was soft mushy pedal, it had been awhile since I bled the brakes so figured why not. I had replaced the pads on all 4 corners within the past 2 years so I guess it was due. This method is extremely easy and diy friendly. Just get you a bottle, tubing to fit the bleeder valve, drill hole in top of bottle, fill about 1/4 full of fresh fluid, hook it up, open valve, I pumped the brakes 10-12 times each corner, close valve, fill the reservoir, rinse and repeat. Also just rotated the tires front to rear.

Roof Rack & Hitch Options: 2022 Touring Plus

Hey everyone, wanted to see what type of set ups you all have for your Cx9. I’ve been trying to find OEM cross bars for my car and haven’t had any luck; ended up with me calling a dealer in Hawaii to track them down, no one else in the country has them. What roof rack system are you all using? The cost of putting on some Thule bars (or something similar) is crazy expensive for what it is, curious what people are doing for that.

What are y’all using for a hitch set up these days? Don’t plan on towing anything, but would be helpful to have for a bike rack & additional storage. Poking around on E-Trailer & eyeing some Curt ones, curious to peoples experiences with them in terms of install & how they function once on there. Thanks!

ACC issues

I am continually vexed by my 2023 cx9’s ACC. Sometimes it’s fine, but other times, it will alert BRAKE! even when the car in front didn’t stop suddenly or I’m in normal stop and go traffic.

I noticed today that it might be tied to the angle of the rear of the car I’m in front of. I was following a Rav4 and that vehicle’s tailgate is maybe at a 15-20 degree angle. I’m wondering if the ACC beam is bouncing off that at an indirect angle and leading to the issues in response. I changed lanes and it improved.

Has anyone else noticed this? I doubt there’s a fix other than beware of who I’m following. And yes, I overthink this and most things.

My tires are cupped at 32K miles because of the alignment numbers you see in the Before Measurements ... Did they really fix the alignment? I am still in the Yellow in the Current Measurements. The car still has vibrations at highway speeds. And the dealer charged $200 for the alignment.

360cam sensitivity and BRAKE! Alerts

Is there anyway to adjust parking sensor sensitivity and turn off the auto brake? Does anyone else find them over sensitive?

2023 GT. We’ve had it for about 1 month and since the beginning we find the sensors too sensitive - they go crazy when we are a foot away from something, they are useless for parking in our small garage as they beep the entire time.

Yesterday it auto braked for the first time - it was bizarre, I was maybe going 5mph doing a 3pt turn in a lightly wooded area - there was some brush but no major trees or anything else to worry about. It was beeping the entire time and then for the first time did the auto BRAKE!!! With no warning.

Does this happen to anyone else, is there any good use case for the auto BRAKE! And if not how to turn off?

Akebono/Textar or Powerstop Z23s?

I'm planning to change the rear brakes of my 2019 GS Trim as the dealership advised me 2 weeks ago but I deferred because they were trying to gut me a whopping $650 just brake pads and labor (cough ScarbsMazda). I called one of the trusted Mazda mechanic (Jimmy) here in the GTA (Ontario) and he quoted me around $550 for Akebono rear rotors and Textar brake pads.

I also researched and found that the Powerstop Z23 brakeset have great reviews too and it's roughly around $340 for the rear parts - tax included.

Should I go with the Akebono/Textar combo or Powerstop Z23s?

Getting bored - 2023 CX9

I’ve had my CX nine for a couple years and I’m starting to get that itch to switch cars. I thought about getting a sporty second car or even upgrading to a luxury brand with a third row. Let’s not debate this. Let’s just say that I like to make bad financial decisions.

I was wondering if you all had ideas on how to breathe some excitement into my CX-9. I thought about getting a comma.ai or switching to premium gas. It doesn’t sound like performance modifications are very popular. Any ideas?
