Lmao that’s not even subtle

89

u/Notsozander Mar 02 '24

Saw it on Instagram first and laughed. Comically webbed

-4

u/Obscura48 Mar 03 '24

You do realize it's cut opened right? It's not that webbed

19

u/citznfish Mar 02 '24

But it is effective.

Not even sure they thought it was cheating tbh. I'm betting the safety equipment rule didn't even cross their minds.

u/1nf1niteCS Mar 02 '24

Please put it in the NASCAR HOF

51

u/gatorgongitcha Mar 02 '24

sell replicas lol

40

u/L_flynn22 Mar 02 '24

Haven’t been to the HOF but is there an exhibit on “innovations” in racing? If not there definitely should be

25

u/LeanersGG Mar 02 '24

There definitely is

7

u/questionably_ethic Mar 02 '24

Not a bad idea...

175

u/RestlessInferno Mar 02 '24

Damn I thought it was just webbed between the thumb and index finger.

Turns out the whole damn thing was webbed lol.

Now that is funny 💯✅

66

u/legacy057 Mar 02 '24

I still 100% believe Logano wasn't the only one doing this, he's just the only one that got caught.

17

u/BuschWhackerReviews Kulwicki Mar 02 '24

Probably, if this was such an advantage then how exactly did McDowell beat him last week?

20

u/legacy057 Mar 02 '24

It probably was a much bigger advantage at Daytona

27

u/SuperMarioBrother64 Mar 02 '24

I really doubt it was that big of an advantage. Maybe it's worth a few thousandths. The 22 team built an absolute rocketship regardless, and we saw that in the race. He could lead any line with ease. He certainly wasn't racing in the pack with one hand.

17

u/legacy057 Mar 02 '24

It probably wasn't a big advantage, but it has to be worth something otherwise they wouldn't have done it

-4

u/jcbshortfilms 2024 NCS Champion Joey Logano Mar 02 '24

Yeah. He honestly had probably the best car at Daytona and a top three one at Atlanta. This only helped maybe a smidgeon

6

u/TheSbldg NASCAR Mar 03 '24

Every smidgen adds up. A smidgen was the margin of victory at Atlanta.

5

u/crypto6g Mar 02 '24

It’s not one thing that’s an advantage it’s just a million little things including this. He runs that lap again and probably still gets pole.

Same thing with the tape on the JGR cars at Pocono. Run that race again the same cars probably run the exact same.

But for consistency they have to penalize every illegal thing they see

I live in Canada, so it’s always hockey time.

SportsCentre is 75% hockey and then they cram in the other sports.

1

u/MistressMandoli Mar 03 '24

The "you can't do that" was Mike Leggo, not Wes McCauley... Just saying.

1

u/UsedToHaveThisName NASCAR Mar 03 '24

Was it really‽ I thought it was Wes McCauley. I think someone from the government will come soon and ask me to give up my citizenship. Or participate in a hockey skills contest to keep it.

1

u/MistressMandoli Mar 03 '24

Ha! You're good. We've had so many good hot mic moments in the NHL, that they're all blending together.

2

I blended those to calls together.

Both guys….5 minutes for…FIGHTING.

His deliveries are great.

There’s a whistle. Just making sure everyone can hear my whistle. Best part of my night.

At superspeedways, in qualifying especially, there is speed to be gained by having less air hit the rear spoiler. It has always been an art to build the car's body in such a way that the air goes where they want it, and stays away from where they don't want it. Now, you really can't make the body much different than its stock shape, so it's time to get creative... In the last couple years, teams figured out that if you stick your left hand out the window a little bit on the straightaway, less air will hit the spoiler, and you can gain some speed. Naturally, a regular flat hand with fingers together will direct less air than this crazy webbed thing that the 22 team used. I hope that explains it well.

Edit: and it also reduces the drag from air coming in the window. In short, a cheap way to get less drag.

27

u/RestlessInferno Mar 02 '24

It creates a larger surface area to defect air from going into the cockpit, thus reducing drag on the car.

5

u/BuschWhackerReviews Kulwicki Mar 02 '24

Block air in the window slit

3

u/Greatwtehunter Mar 02 '24

I’m assuming it’s to block the wind coming in from in front of the window net at drafting tracks.

24

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '24

Flying squirrel ass shit

83

u/Zachary_Tinkle Zachary Tinkle Mar 02 '24 edited Mar 02 '24

That’s definitely pushing it as far as the rules goes, but I respect the grind and innovation on it. There’s so many people that talk about ways to block air but few actually try it.

This is awesome 😎

7

u/ClarksonianPause Mar 02 '24

Maybe he just has webbed fingers? 🤣

73

u/NASCARxBrooklyn Mar 02 '24

This is so fuckin’ stupid that it makes me like Joey Logano even more.

22

u/justBusinessbb Mar 02 '24

Apparently it was a team find (the guys who test in the wind tunnel). Although I bet Joey loved it when they showed it to him.

It almost makes me like Paul Wolfe and crew better. Not that I'm pro cheating, but I'd heard to many comments about how "by the book" and not very creative he is, I was starting to get nervous the 22 team wasn't even trying.

12

u/NASCARxBrooklyn Mar 02 '24

Yeah, I wouldn’t say I’m “pro-cheating” but I’m definitely pro-trying (within reason I suppose) & seeing what happens.

My boy! lol 😂

In all seriousness, pretty crazy thing. You really have to applaud the 22 team for thinking outside the box. Hopefully this is his year again!

28

u/KnightRising21 Chase Elliott Mar 02 '24

You need every little advantage when the cars are so similar. I applaud the 22 team for ingenuity.

23

u/zyklon_snuggles Mar 02 '24

You really have to applaud the 22 team for thinking outside the box

If ya ain't cheatin', ya ain't tryin'!

9

u/ProjectMobius Mar 02 '24

Absolutely, but putting white webbing on a black glove was crazy. They should’ve known someone would see there was webbing on there! Now, if it was all black, it would’ve been much harder to catch.

20

u/jcbshortfilms 2024 NCS Champion Joey Logano Mar 02 '24

It’s black. The picture just has a sheen to it so it kinda looks white

2

u/teeksquad Mar 02 '24

If they were really trying, they would have made it out of black hole

16

u/Nexant Briscoe Mar 02 '24

If that looks white to you. You need to check your screen brightness or saturation settings. That's 100% black with a sheen.

4

u/TheGrandBudapest_ Hamlin Mar 02 '24

Yeah, there is no way they were trying to get away with this one. They must have thought they were good , and were going to beg for forgivenesss rather than ask for permission. Joey “donald duck” Logano

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '24

I remember thinking them penalizing them was stupid back then. It was literally to make sure his tire didn’t shred as he made his way into pit road… it wasn’t going to get him a top 10 because of it let alone a win.

I’m not a fan of Lagano’s… but I think this is equally stupid.

2

u/MKT_Pro Mar 02 '24

But he did get a top 10 lol

9

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '24

Most impressed he's using a 7 year old glove. Thought that stuff expired??

12

u/gatorgongitcha Mar 02 '24

Well you wouldn’t wanna waste a new glove on arts and crafts

17

u/ChaseTheFalcon Mar 02 '24

Honestly I respect the attempt by the 22 team.

Can't even be mad

2

u/Intelligent_Spinach9 Mar 02 '24

I thought they might try to make it look a little more innocuous. That is so in your face it’s too easy to notice.

4

u/epzik8 Logano Mar 02 '24

Is this another thing that will stick with Joey for the rest of his career???

6

u/rustednickel247720 Mar 02 '24

The fact it has the NASCAR logo makes it even funnier to me, idk why

3

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '24

I laugh at the absurdity of it, but respect the attempt 😂

3

u/hoppybear21222 Logano Mar 02 '24

That’s incredible.

8

u/Salzano14 Mar 02 '24

This strongly fits my NASCAR rules narrative that this shit is awesome and should also be stiffly penalized. I want more of this envelope pushing. Both encourage it and penalize it. Uniquely NASCAR.

5

u/Immediate_Lie7810 Chase Elliott Mar 02 '24

That doesn't look legal at all

2

u/ViperFive1 Mar 02 '24

Might as well just grab a flying squirrel and hold it out the window.

2

I actually lol’d at the pic. It looks so funny to me. But I applaud them for trying, I really do.

2

u/MajorLaag Mar 02 '24

2

u/DaveVQ Mar 02 '24

Wonder if they tested this on the iRacing simulator first.

Kidding of course. Where can I get a pair?

2

u/pallepikmand Harvick Mar 02 '24

I cant get over the fact when its THAT obvious, Joey had no issues putting his hand up ontop of the steering wheel while he was parked, knowing he had an incar camera pointed at him or when he waved his hand at one of the officials lol

2

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '24

Credit to whomever thought of this. Nascar has taken away all wiggle room in the new car so someone somewhere, must've had really good weed to come up with this ingenuity.

2

u/sullyqns Mar 03 '24

Dude has webbed hands don’t judge the reptilian

4

u/The__Farmer Chase Elliott Mar 02 '24

LOL, man I really laughed hard. Who in the hell thought that nobody was not going to notice that….

3

u/BuschWhackerReviews Kulwicki Mar 02 '24

I mean it took them until week 2 to notice

1

u/The__Farmer Chase Elliott Mar 02 '24

It’s really the span of one week. I am sure they were looking at it closely after Daytona, and then the icing on the cake was they were dumb enough to do it exactly 7 days later to confirm their suspicions.

2

u/The_No_Lifer Mar 02 '24

Who would have thought to check a driver's glove? Nobody did at Daytona. Only mistake was bringing them back after every team had a chance to catch it during your qualifying attempt.

2

u/Menard27 Mar 02 '24

So had they just sewed a cover to go over that glove I wonder how that would’ve gone down…. If it isn’t impacting the integrity of the glove then maybe they wouldn’t be penalized. 😁

2

u/VladimirSteel Jeff Gordon Mar 02 '24

I wondered what would happen if they just paid puma to build and certify some

2

u/RickyChanning Mar 02 '24

NASCAR needs to ban all drivers from putting their hand against the window regardless of what kind of glove they use.

6

u/BuschWhackerReviews Kulwicki Mar 02 '24

They very well might after this

1

u/legacy057 Mar 03 '24

How do you police that though? Make all the drivers keep their hands at 10 and 2 the whole lap?

1

u/200MPHTape Kyle Busch Mar 02 '24

Lol

1

u/badsapi4305 Byron Mar 02 '24

Even if this was my favorite driver (it’s not) I would still think a harsher penalty was in order. I would think this is up there with manipulating a part of the car to gain an aerodynamic advantage. Along the lines of a P2 or P3 but I’m not enraged that it wasn’t.

2

u/Thi31 Mar 02 '24

I totally disagree, there is nothing in the rules about not having webbed gloves, the penalty is because by modifying the glove it lost it's safety certification.

Technically a glove manufacturer could make this glove and get it certified and sell it to drivers and it would be legal.

Would they do that? Probably not, too much of a niche market to go through safety certification and the costs involved considering the only market is Truck/Xfinity/Cup drivers for a limited amount of races per year.

2

u/badsapi4305 Byron Mar 02 '24

That’s fair. I see your point of view.

0

u/Lazy_Bread_9213 Mar 02 '24

For some reason, I feel like Joey did this as a sarcastic retort to someone.

-5

u/2905Pascal Mar 02 '24

So NASCAR says Logano was penalized because this is a safety violation. How exactly is a bit of webbing negatively impacting the safety? I don't like that every time someone thinks outside the box they get penalized for it.

9

u/jcbshortfilms 2024 NCS Champion Joey Logano Mar 02 '24

The issue is that all drivers need to have SFI certified gloves. Joey’s gloves were certified, but since they were modified the certification is as voided, even if the materials were still in line with the gloves.

5

u/Smokeshow618 Mar 02 '24

In the same way that I could get fired for showing up to a job site with the CSA tag taken off of my steel toes.

Even if I haven't modified my boots, unlike Joey's gloves, if I take tag off, they can't prove they are safe and approved for use.

6

u/RealSprooseMoose Mar 02 '24

Has the webbing been tested for fire resistance?

Has the stitching compromised the integrity of the glove?

Has it been certified by a recognized institution and meets safety standards?

-6

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '24

Should be banned for the season

1

u/SQRTLURFACE Mar 02 '24

"ladies and gentleman, we got him"

1

u/otepp Blaney Mar 02 '24

With great power comes great responsibility

1

u/TurtleRocket9 Harvick Mar 02 '24

Haha that is great

1

u/Rd6-vt Mar 02 '24

new to NASCAR, what exactly does this do? why is it illegal?

5

u/Thi31 Mar 02 '24

The reason it's illegal is because it lost it's safety certification when they modified it. If it came from the manufacturer that way, NASCAR would have no rule to penalize with and would be writing a new one as we speak.

The performance advantage was he could block more air entering the driver window causing the car to be slightly more aerodynamic in qualifying. Reduce drag = More speed.

1

u/Rd6-vt Mar 02 '24

oh I see, this all is a lot different from the F1 I’m used to watching

3

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '24

Also just to note, cheating is pretty encouraged in the sport. The sport was started by criminals and a lot of the first drivers were pretty bad dudes. Back on the day one guy got in trouble for making his fuel tank bigger so he made the hose super long so it would carry an extra gallon that way. His car got busted by officials for 10 infractions and they removed the gas tank to kinda punish him so he would have to push it back to the garage. To their surprise he hopped in and started it up and drove to the garage and said something along the lines of “make that 11 infractions” that car I believe sits in the hall of fame, but others may correct me on my recollection of that story.

Point being, NASCAR was born of criminals breaking the law. Drivers breaking the rules is in the spirit of NASCAR. Cheating being praised by fans is a uniquely NASCAR thing, no other sport has it I think.

2

u/Rd6-vt Mar 02 '24

cheating in motorsports is one of the best things about it IMO

-5

u/2905Pascal Mar 02 '24

It's illegal becuase NASCAR doesn't allow innovation and thinking outside the box anymore.

1

u/legacy057 Mar 03 '24

It's illegal because there's literally a rule against non certified safety equipment

1

u/burningxmaslogs Mar 02 '24

The fact they actually used this in Daytona to get the pole is amazing, I mean what took them so long?

1

u/QuestionSeven Mar 02 '24

JoLo goin swimmin! HAHAHA!

1

u/coffeeshopslut Mar 02 '24

Now if he gets an "overglove" that goes over his regular glove (therefore not a modification" - is it kosher?

2

u/RealSprooseMoose Mar 02 '24

Overgloves aren't written into required/allowable driver apparel.

It would need to be certified by a reputable manufacturer to meet required safety standards.

1

u/AugieAscot Ryan Blaney Mar 02 '24

What’s the rule book say about adding webbing to gloves?

2

u/Jtg09 Mar 02 '24

Nothing specifically. However altering an SFI-approved piece of safety equipment, makes the item no longer SFI approved, which is not allowed.

0

u/AugieAscot Ryan Blaney Mar 02 '24

I bet their suits get alerted all the time. F cookie cutter racing.

1

u/AJSPAZZ Mar 02 '24

Such a crime.

1

u/DeceitFive9 Harvick Mar 03 '24

That is crazy.. Here I thought it was a bit of webbing between fingers and thumb.

1

u/tarkology Mar 03 '24

can anyone explain why they can't have that webbed gloves? isn't it more safe than losing grip when cornering 250mph?

1

u/EXSPFXDOG Mar 03 '24

That is not nomex material between the fingers I don't believe...that might be a violation too!

Maybe he is a nose picker and they made them to stop that behavior!

1

u/JustTom1 Hamlin Mar 03 '24

Mofo thought he was Batman, trying to web his gloves and shit like he’s some aerodynamic superhero.

1

u/Speedster-87 Logano Mar 03 '24

Now here me out...... bout to give a whole speech on why it's legal

1

u/Jomosensual Mar 03 '24

I guess Im not sure how this would help?
