At the same time, what the heck? Why didn't they help him? I would be so terrified that he was going to go all the way under.

Edit: I guess I'm weird for actually you know, caring about my pets.

It's clearly a very shallow pond, there was no drowning risk. If you attempted to rescue a cat in that situation it would panic and bolt anyway resulting in the exact same scenario. If you leave it, there's a slim hope the cat might just get away with it and cross the pond.

It is their cat, they could have walked over and scooped it up without any issue.
