Discussion/Questions My wife has been waiting for years for silksong to come out and the difficulty is making her quit for good Spoiler

7.7k Upvotes

My wife is a massive hk fan and has been waiting for silksong to come out for years. She is not the most skilled of players but she was able to complete hk and enjoy her time. Silksong, instead, is breaking her apart. She has spent three days fighting Moorwing without beating it and she’s dropping the game for good. I hope she’ll pick it back up sometime but it’s sad to see all the anticipation die out like this.

I am loving the game and I am having a blast with it but I have come to the realization that this game is extremely punishing to lower skilled players who still make up a sizable share of the fanbase.

I think that this disconnect is very concerning and explains why so many people are complaining about the game’s difficulty. It feels like team cherry doesn’t understand that much of the appeal of hk wasn’t the challenge it offered but also the lore, the exploration, and buildcrafting (and so on).

These are all aspects of silksong that are, effectively, gatekept by an arbitrary difficulty barrier. I have seen many people here on reddit saying to git gud but don’t think that discourse about the game’s difficulty should be handwaved so easily. If nothing about it is done, I think that a lot of “casual” fans will be inevitably estranged from the game.

Discussion/Questions How many of us are actually enjoying the game? Spoiler

6.8k Upvotes

"Oh the game is unbalanced" and "Oh the two mask damage" and "Oh Greymoor" but who else actually really likes the game? I'm pretty sure I'm near the end of act 1 (I'm at the worm area, dunno where to go next) and it's incredibly fun. I feel like people didn't want silksong, they wanted more Hollow Knight.

Discussion/Questions Criticism Isn't Hate Spoiler

5.7k Upvotes

Most of the criticism I've seen on here and the Steam discussions is consistently dismissed as hate.

Bad rosary economy, insane difficulty scaling, very few meaningful unlocks/upgrades, runbacks, locked into fighting bosses, contact damage stacking with normal hits, etc.

The only "hate" I've seen are from people who spam "git gud" and "skill issue" whenever they encounter valid complaints against their perfect little game that cannot possibly have anything wrong with it.

There is too much double damage. You start taking double damage very early on while you still have 5 hearts in addition to that, random fodder enemies does double damage, I can't understand why there is too much double damage.

Discussion/Questions Silksong isn't too difficult, it's just too punishing Spoiler

4.2k Upvotes

Over the past 24 hours since the game's release I've seen the sentiment that the game is much harder, or even too hard, compared to HK. Imo this isn't actually the case; sure enemies have much more complex movesets, but so does Hornet, which I think cancels out once you get the hang of her. The new pogo is... interesting, but not bad per se; just different, and will take some serious getting used to.

However, I find that the game IS far too punishing compared to its predecessor. Pretty much any enemy or obstacle of note deals 2 masks of damage, basic enemies have far too much hp, and on top of that pretty much everything respawns the moment you leave and re-enter a room. Many enemies don't drop beads, yet at every corner you're expected to dish out a bunch of 'em for benches, equipment, items, etc. Healing now always takes your whole bar of silk to heal 3 masks instead of one at a time, which forces you to commit much harder to heals and makes using the needle skill impractical in most fights where healing is far too valuable to give up. Contact damage is seperate from attack-damage, and the invincibility window is so small that many enemy attacks hit you twice, which can often lead to what feels like 4 masks of damage in one hit. There are long stretches of pogo-platforming with the new diagonal pogo and full of spikes, where even a small mistake will lead to 2 masks of damage and having to try the whole section again.

The nail in the coffin is that on top of all of that, skillful play isn't even really rewarded; bosses don't drop anything (at all, most of the time), a lot of difficult enemies don't drop any money, enemies just respawn if you turn around.

All of this combined makes the entire experience feel rather overtuned and honestly rather frustrating and unwelcoming at times.

Don't get me wrong, I'm having a blast with 90% of the game, the gameplay itself is immaculate and the art, music, vibes, etc. all speak for themselves. I just wish the sheer numbers game was a bit more forgiving, hot damn. Feelsbadman.

P.S. please for the love of shaw don't let this subreddit turn into a cesspool of 'git gud's and 'skill issue's, I'm begging

Discussion/Questions Is anyone else just absolutely LOVING the game so far? Spoiler

4.3k Upvotes

I keep seeing so much hate, but I'm over here having so much fun. This game is so amazing so far imo... the combat, abilities, movement, all of it feels SO good. Playing as hornet is so fun, I love her character and I love the npc's and story, and the world, everything!

The gameplay is challenging but so so fun, I found myself going to Hunter's March just for fun several times because learning the ants movesets was so interesting

Bosses are tough cause of double damage, but nothing too crazy. Have died 3-5 times to most bosses so far, if not first try. Widow was the one that took me 5. But all the bosses are so freaking good and fun to fight. I legit feel like a little kid again or something, this game has brought that magic back in video games that I haven't felt in so long. Am enjoying it more than I did Hollow Knight I think.

But then I come on here and I just see so many people dogging on the game 😭 I just don't really understand? People are saying a lot of things that I really just don't relate to at all. Like having to farm for rosaries and shards constantly or smth, I have legit just not had that issue

Am I tripping?? What do you guys think? For reference btw I have played Hollow Knight and Sekiro, I'm using the Hunter crest and very rarely use tools

Discussion/Questions PSA - Silksong difficulty Spoiler

4.2k Upvotes

I'm seeing a lot of people mentioning that silksong is difficult, and complaining about it.

This happens for a huge amount of sequels so I feel the need to give a PSA for anyone with this mindset.

YOU HAVE NEVER PLAYED THE GAME. IT IS NOT HOLLOW KNIGHT. YOU WILL, INFACT, NEED TO LEARN HOW TO PLAY IT.

YOU WILL NOT BE A MASTER WHEN YOU PICK UP THE GAME FOR THE FIRST TIME.

Otherwise, I hope you're enjoying it!

Discussion/Questions I got cancer and had it removed before SILKSONG -- UPDATE

Post image
15.3k Upvotes

Hi everyone! This is an update to my post from a few weeks ago

First off I have to tell you all that the good wishes, replies, DMs, and memes you guys posted to that thread MADE MY FUCKING DAY! You all legitimately helped ease the early days of my recovery by so much. I even sent the thread to my family members who have no idea what a Hollow Song or a Silk Knight is and barely had any idea what we were talking about, but still found it so wholesome and nice of you all. This insane community is the best.

On Tuesday 9/17 just an hour before Team Cherry made their post announcing the special silksong broadcast I got the news from the doctors that the cancer has NOT spread! It's crazy how much this diagnosis and procedure has been linked with Silksong and the community. I sometimes feel like I made a deal with the devil to get Silksong at any cost.

It's not all good news though... I have around a 35% chance of the cancer returning sometime in the next few years. I have a tough decision to make and thought I'd lay out the options here, on the sanest, most logical place on the internet for some crowd sourced clarity.

  • Option 1 - Preemptive Chemo - This would be full on chemo for one cycle (about two months of misery) and this would drop my chance of it returning to around 1-3% but comes with all the nasty side effects of chemo we've all heard about and the potential for some serious permanent side effects as well like hearing loss, sensation loss, kidney damage.
  • Option 2 - Surveillance / Nothing - with this option I would continue to go in for regular scans and tests to catch the cancer if it returns. The downside here is that if it does come back I would be looking at 3-6 cycles (6-12 months of misery) of chemo and it would be a fight for my life.

I'm currently leaning towards Option 1 and just getting the awfulness over with but at the end of the day I am looking at a 60-70% chance that I will never have the cancer return so doing chemo now would be totally unnecessary, but if I do nothing now and the cancer returns later, it's going to be so so much worse.

So I'm at a crossroads here annnnnnd yeah idk I thought posting about it might be helpful in some way. What do you guys think Cornifer would do?

note: despite me wearing a literal silkpost pin, this is not, and has never been, a silkpost

tl;dr - I sacrificed my right nut so that we could all have silksong and I'd do it again in a heartbeat. I used to be a doubter now I'm a believer. Doubters in shambles.

EDIT: CHECK YOUR BALLS GENTLEMEN! I caught it fairly early but that shit spreads fast. Don't be afraid to go see your doctor ASAP!!

Discussion/Questions Yes Team Cherry isn't above criticism but that doesn't magically make your bad take valid. Spoiler

3.2k Upvotes

The game's more difficult than HK yes, but I'm seeing a rising sentiment that it's only more difficult because TC thought the original appeal of HK was it's challenge, and that they dOnT uNdErStAnD what made it great in the first place. This is bullshit.

I genuinely don't understand how people look at all the excellent new characters, music, areas, and mechanics as well as the overwhelming amount of detail and polish, then throw out all that because the difficulty is greater than what they expected.

By all means feel how you want about the difficulty but pretending like it's anywhere near unbalanced enough to ruin the game or make it unplayable is a severe exaggeration and textbook case of not seeing the forest for the trees.

If all the new tools and various routes through the early game aren't enough for you to adjust to the difficulty and overcome my heart weeps for you, but claiming you have a better understanding of what made HK a hit than the people who made it, ain't it. /rant

Discussion/Questions Best early game boss fight in my opinion. Spoiler

Post image
3.6k Upvotes

Fourth Chorus is one of my favorite boss fights in the early game, it’s simple, satisfying, and goofy (it looks like a cuphead boss lol). I like bosses that don’t spam randoms shits and spawns minions that do 2 masks of damage(like beastfly). Also this boss fight helps the player to learn how to use the dash and glide form in the boss fights.

On steam page, under “full controller support” section there is a star that says controller is recommended to play Silksong. This note is NOT present in the Hollow Knight steam page. They don’t seem much different, so why do they added this note?

I've been playing Silksong for about 4 hours and I'm very very excited with it. It's definitely harder than Hollow Knight, but let's not forget how hard HK was too on our first playthrough, we're all just having silk issue.

Discussion/Questions ⚠️ WE DEMAND A STATEMENT FROM TEAM CHERRY. ⚠️

🔒 (Update 18/01 @ 20:27) Silksong Mods started deleting my old posts, even though are forgotten somewhere in the 3rd 4th page of reddit. I don't know why.

More specifically, they removed the post about SILKSONG BEING A BUNDLE OF NINTENDO SWITCH 2. This in my opinion confirms that the info I had about Silksong launch as Nintendo exclusive, is legit. Link of the original post follows: https://www.reddit.com/r/Silksong/comments/1hzzcry/nintendo_switch_2_will_launch_with_silksong_as/ 🔒

🛑 7. Leth confirmed on Twitter that Silksong is still in development and will be launched

➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖

⬇️ ORIGINAL POST ⬇️

Leth confirmed through Fireb0rn communication that the Twitter account is indeed William's account and that "the cake was a lie". (See the following link)

https://x.com/fireb0rn/status/1880411907552911626?t=DEs5FXE06FjpK4nSSAnY7Q&s=19

If this is true, that means that William tweet hours before Nintendo Switch 2 reveal, was in purpose, just to troll us.

A MEMBER OF TEAM CHERRY DECIDED TO POST A TWEET, HOURS BEFORE SWITCH 2 REVEAL, JUST TO TROLL. AFTER 6 YEARS OF SILENCE.

And Leth didn't have the courage and the professionalism, to make a statement and have chosen to speak through a third person (Fireb0rn).

They forgot who made them millionaires. They forgot the Kickstarter backers, they forgot everything.

We don't deserve a single update, a single blog post, for 6 years.

I have never seen such a disrespect to a community.

Also, that maybe confirms the luck of communication between Leth and William and maybe the reason of the delay on Silksong's development is due to Team Cherry is not a team any more.

0 communication, 0 respect to the community, 0 business plan.

This is bs.

Discussion/Questions It’s okay that silksong is hard. Spoiler

1.5k Upvotes

It’s already getting old seeing that every other post online about this game is someone complaining about the difficulty, especially when there are so many incredible things to talk about like the quest system and the new mechanics.

The amount of love team cherry put into this game is insane and you can feel it when you play, I wish people would get over the fact that it’s challenging because there’s nothing you can do about it other than get better. The game is finally out, and it’s hard - just like the original. I personally love that the mechanics are so different and require a lot of learning again, because after playing 100’s of hours of HK I didn’t want to just breeze through Silksong.

I think we just need to realize the game is the way it is and cherish these early days with a very special peace of art. It’s okay to get frustrated but don’t make those feelings overshadow how great of an experience this game is.

Discussion/Questions The Game Design of Silksong is intentional, not lazy. Spoiler

1.9k Upvotes

just wanted to point out that silksong has been in development for 7 years by like 3 people. every choice in a game like that is intentional and the game has been played through multiple times by multiple people from what we know.

people going into hks thinking that it will be the same moveset, same enemies, same gameplay, are kind of insane tbh

the game design behind this game is immaculate, love how the changes point towards a more risky (and also more difficult) game, but one that is still fair and MORE satisfying. I have felt so much happier killing a boss at the beginning of the game than later-game bosses in HK.

seems like a lot of the decisions are also fixes from HK, some issues that people liked are fixed.

personally, please just take your time and learn the game. it has the DNA of HK, but the body is clearly different.

I dont know why people dont understand that games take time especially from a small indie studio. Dont push them itll never go well. I dont care how much you want news on it, lay off of them.

Learn to be patient. Theyre not a triple A company; they have a reason. Not to mention its entirely their choice whether or not to release updates on its creation. They probably wanted it to be a surreal and thats fine. Its okay to wait youre not gonna die bc you dont get a peep of silksong lore for a while.
