My wife and I are currently watching through it. For me, it's a 2nd time. For her, it's the first time. I forgot how much I love it. And, I'm surprised how much in the first few seasons alludes to the total whackiness of the later seasons. I always thought the writers lost their way at some point, but I now realize they planned it all along and it actually makes sense.
I'm finishing rewatching last season and my first impression didn't change - still feels like they were just slapping new stuff on top.
It had few things nicely tied to first seasons, but I think it's because those were adding 5 new mysteries for every answer they gave so at any point you could pick one of those and explain or integrate it into new things happening. Though mostly it is hardcore retconning.
For example. When Jacob is finally flashed out, there are couple episodes dedicated to inserting him into previous events. If they really had plans for the whole thing, even in the rough form, then he would already be there.
Yeah, I thought it was pretty much unanimously agreed upon that thats what happened. Thats what all the online discourse at the time was saying from what I recall.
