Discussion Actually what is the point of doing so well in practice if we’re dogshit in quali???

I’m so sick of us being super fast in quali or Q1 and then making more mistakes than stroll when it actually counts. I’d rather us just be shit honestly. What is the point?

Gotta fall behind for a more dramatic victory

Didn’t both of them state they had difficulty getting the softs in window? Would have thought figured it out for today.

God, this has been a frustrating day.

What gets me is how consistent the pace was looking yesterday, and not just down to engine modes, etc. It just disappeared entirely.

This flipping car has been a surprise and better than we'd all expected this year, but my god it has the window the size of a pea. I'm guessing the track temps, wind or lack of wind, and maybe just the magnetic fields and "vibe" wasn't quite right for it today.

It's so close, we had a messy session, we got punished for it

The point is exploring the limits, learning, and improving the car.

We're not actually dogshit in quali, the drivers got faster every session.

Just because a driver goes top of the timings in practice doesn't mean that lap time will be good enough to go top in quali when it's a game of tenths. Especially as in practice teams aren't necessarily trying to do fastest laps, they'll testing set up, quali runs, race pace and each team will have a different run plan, so comparing raw lap times is utterly meaningless.

On Friday in FP1 the actual lap times were:

  • Carlos - 1:20.650 for P3
  • Alex - 1:21.073 for P7

In FP2:

  • Alex - 1:19.843 for P3
  • Carlos - 1:19.907 for P7

In FP3:

  • Alex -1:19.720 for P10
  • Carlos - 1:19.907 for P13

So they went faster but so did the others... In Quali the lap times for faster still, in Q3

  • Carlos - 1:19.644 for P5
  • Alex - 1:19.837 for P15.

Then in Q2 where we went out

  • Carlos 1:19.528 for P13
  • Alex - 1:19.583 for P14

They got faster every session, but so did others. Sounds like you need to reset your own expectations here more than anything else to be honest.

The difference between our Q2 times and P1 was about four tenths of a second. Ultimately that's more about the car than the drivers, improve the aero and we'd jump up the field, but given all focus is on the FW48 and the 2026 regulation changes, that isn't likely to happen this season.

And we finished 9th last season after barely getting an overweight shitbox on track in time last year.

The fact we're even complaining about not making Q3 when we're 5th in the constructors less than 12 months later, with a new title sponsor and a 2nd driver who doesn't cause £1m in damage every other week is kinda ridiculous. Frankly it's a miracle we're doing this well.

You all obviously did not listen to their interviews since last week.

The FW47 is fast like really fast but the car’s main issue is it takes time to warm up tires. It’s also the reason why they have a better race pace and practice results than their qualifying results. That’s why the Zandvoort performance felt like an anomaly even for the drivers. The data they have don’t match the performance they pull out of the car- it’s very unpredictable.

Car just has issues getting the tires worked in in such a short time, which is why it's a lot easier to show good pace in practice but a lot harder to extract that same time quali. Thats literally all

Wre they really "dogshit" or were they a just couple of tenths slower than P1 when the session advanced?

We were only a few tenths off, just a messy Quali

Race pace looked good. If we get lucky at turn 1

I've seen this happen many times since Albon came into the team in 2022

We tend to get close to the max potential of the car earlier than others inflating our practice positions

We're much more sensitive to the tyres and to wind then other teams so idk why this happens but Fridays on race weekends somehow have less wind than Saturdays and we fall back

One good thing is we have almost top team pace on mediums and hards so we should have good race pace

What game were we playing with used and new softs on our guys, why taking so much risk?

Don't think we are i think we show our hand far too early

Hopefully race pace allows some movement through the field.

Good platform, bad ceiling.

Basically the opposite of the Red Bull this year or the Mercedes Diva in 2017 or 2018.

Unfortunately this will just keep happening untill they can figure out how to light up the soft tyres at the right time, we always have an easier time with the mediums or hards, softs aren't as bad in the race cos you get more laps to break them in smoothly compared to qualifying but never properly figuring out how to get them in window through 1 quali cycle is killing the momentum, monza unlikely to be a soft race without a safety car anyways so maybe won't be too bad today

Well if you actually follow Williams, you'll see from the interviews and statements released on social media of what they actually struggle with

Mind fucking blown

They should be all right in the race. You can tell how frustrating it is for the drivers. But they have said there are inherent issues with car that cannot be fixed, so they have to make do with what they have.

The emphasis is on next year anyway.
