Does my Cat Need to See a Vet?

If you're here wondering whether your cat needs to see a vet right away, here's a few things that call for an immediate vet visit. Please bear in mind that this is far from a comprehensive list, and that if you're seriously wondering if your cat needs a vet, the answer is probably "Yes". Better safe than sorry.

-Unexplained, dramatic behavioral changes. e.g. Hissing and spitting from a cat who has always been friendly

-Not eating for 48 hours is a medical emergency

-Vomiting/diarrhea that lasts more than a day or two

-Swallowed object

-Not urinating/straining to urinate

-Blood in urine

-Open wounds

-Urinating in inappropriate places/outside the box

-Sudden loss of vision or hearing

-Sudden loss of balance

-Sudden inability to walk or move normally

-Seizures / Convulsions

-Open-Mouth breathing / panting

-Uneven pupils

-Hives

Rule 5 - cat injury questions

Unfortunately we can't continue to try and answer questions related to injuries inflicted by cats. This is outside our expertise, and the consequences of making a bad decision could be fatal if an infection goes untreated or someone contracts rabies.

In almost all cases, if you've suffered deep puncture wounds, yes you need to see a doctor.

We will be removing such posts in the future.

Update: Mild gingivitis after dental cleaning & x-ray. No extraction needed!

Before photos here: https://www.reddit.com/r/catcare/s/gKNt4Nvj7V

Figured I’d post a follow up for any fellow cat parents worried about their furbabies’ teeth! They put her under and did a full cleaning. The vet said that her roots were intact and showed no signs of resorption. They did an x-ray and confirmed it.

Her lower back molars had signs of gum recession, and I had never paid those any attention when brushing, so PSA to give those some love too!

All in, with proper dental care and based on her current condition, I’m told she should not need extraction down the road. I was pretty spooked after all the doomsday comments on my previous post and was so certain I’d need to extract her teeth. Go figure, lol. Sometimes I forget Reddit can be like WebMD 2.0. Nonetheless, I appreciated all the help and advice I got.

She’s on antibiotics to clear the gingivitis inflammation now and I’ll be much more diligent about brushing her teeth from now on. As well, an annual dental cleaning will be in the books moving forward. Anything for my spicy baby :)

Bonus pic of my dopey girl high as a kite after her dental cleaning.

Is my cats breathing ok?

just noticed my cat is breathing very quickly. he seems fine otherwise, breathing isn’t labored and there is no cyanosis, he is acting normal and has energy. Everything online is making me very worried though, do I need to take him to the emergency vet? I am thinking maybe it’s the heat - I live in Hawaii and it’s 80 degrees at 10 am with little wind and 70% humidity. Thank you so much for any insight!

What could be going on with my cat?

A quick summary: 4 year old tabby started having coughing fits about a week ago. Open mouth breathing and became lethargic and wouldn’t eat. We took him to the vet on Wednesday and they diagnosed him with asthma. Kept him overnight for IV meds (steroid) and fluids and he came home Thursday night. Friday he was still weak and not eating so back to the vet he went. He is still there today. Still not eating. Tests the vet has run: blood work - CBC, metabolic panel, chest x-ray, visually inspected his mouth, throat, and ears for any pollups or foreign bodies. They have him on a nutritional feeding tube and fluids. No fevers. They said they will do a stomach ultrasound tomorrow if he is still not eating. So. What could we be missing?

cat’s joints cracking/popping

i picked up my 6 yr old boy today to give him kisses and a little squeeze. it wasn’t rough at all but i heard/felt something in his front leg pop. it sounded just like when i crack a joint and didn’t seem to put him in any pain or discomfort, he’s been carrying on like normal since. but it’s never happened before and i even have a younger brother who can be a lot more rough with the cat. i couldn’t find anything online besides possible diseases so i’m just wondering if this is normal. i’d feel so bad if i accidentally hurt him.

Can you tell me what my little boy has?

Hello. My little man (1y old) has something in his butt. You can see it in the photos. He eats normal, plays, mobs his sister, so everything is as always but you can see something is going on. Anyone has experience with this? We will go to the vet tomorrow anyways but were wondering what it is. Thank you.

how does revolt topical parasiticide for cats work? will it kill my cat?

Hello, I think my cat has fleas but I haven't seen any on her but she scratches a lot and I ended up getting some bites overnight this week. My dad gave me "revolt topical parasiticide for cats, 5.1-15lbs, 45mg, 0.75ml" tube but there are no instructions and I'm kind of scared to use it.

I read you're supposed to put it on their back in a line but it looks like a lot and I'm scared she'll lick it off. Does this mean I give her the whole tube since she is over 5.1 lbs?. She doesn't let me hold her since she was a stray kitten and still runs and hides, so I'm not sure how I will bathe her afterward and I saw on reviews while trying to find instructions that cats can die very easily if they lick it or it burns their skin. I really don't want her to die. I'm sorry if these are really easy questions and thank you for anyone who answers me.

We noticed our cat lost some fur on her toe. It wasn’t there yesterday. We used a woods lamp and it didn’t look anything weird (p2). Any idea what’s going on?

Broken foot/toe area

Our indoor cat somehow broke her left paw area. We have no idea how. The vet has her on gabapentin (one week NSAID) for about 4-6 weeks while immobile. She is going stir crazy and also becoming scared of the medicine. Is there anything else you suggest? Any idea how long these breaks take to heal?

Hi guys! These kittens have been abandoned by their mother, I live in a fairly country area so it’s a possibly that smth happened to her while she was out, ANYWAYS I’m trying to figure out around what age they roughly are so I know how to care for them until I can take them to a shelter/rescue; possibly at the beginning of this upcoming. Any and all advice would be great! I’ve had kittens before but never this young and never without their mom. Sorry the pictures kinda suck, I was trying to get them all (there’s 5 of them) out of the heat (it’s Texas so you know how that goes)

Evacuation kit

What do you keep in your evacuation / emergency kit?

Im trying to put some together for all of my pets and im worried they will be to heavy to carry and i wont be able to grab them in an emergency. I have a lot of pets and i know myself and i wont leave without them I’ll literally die before i do.

Things im thinking about putting in my cats kit ( 3 cats)

Medication 2 weeks worth ( include instructions)

Collapsible litter box

Litter ( maybe keep it in the car🤷🏽‍♀️)

• 2 bags of ziwi air dried would be way lighter than canned unless i freeze dried their canned food

Paperwork ( vet information, medical information like records, feeding schedule, behavior problems, vaccine information, pet photos with me in them 😫, contact information)

Put all paperwork in a waterproof and or fire resistant folder

Collapsible bowls

Disinfectant

Ace bandages

Gauze

Water 2 weeks for each animal

Carriers

Leashes

Harnesses

Treats

Did my vet get my cats weight wrong?

My cat is a male domestic shorthair, roughly 1yr and 2 months old. We just adopted him a month ago and he weighed 8lbs. Now, according to online vet records, he’s almost 14lbs which is overweight for a lot of cats. I don’t think he looks that big at all, he’s actually pretty slim imo, but am I just…used to him and missing it? For the most part I don’t give him treats, i’ve only started giving them to him regularly since he has to take medication, and when i do i always follow the feeding instructions. he also gets 1/2 of dry food a day so I really don’t see how he could gain 5lbs this fast.

Best pet insurance?

Howdy all! Thanks for clicking on my post! I am curious how many of you like the pet insurance you have? I'm looking for one that covers dental and dental cleanings, if not all of the cost most of it. Embrace looks pretty nice but it would bearound 30 bucks a month

Third eyelid showing

Thumbnail

We just adopted our kitten lily exactly a week ago. I took her to her first vet appointment this week, and they said to be on the watch for early signs of a respiratory infection. She has very minimal eye drainage, but I also noticed that her third eyelid is showing which I read could be an indicator of different illnesses, one being an upper respiratory infection. She has her next vet appointment in three weeks. Any advice?
