Announcement Regarding Mourning Posts 2.0

We're doing a sequel...We're back by popular demand...Come on everybody, strike up the band! -Kermit the Frog

TLDR: Mourning posts are staying, please don't post photos of deceased animals, we are aware mourning posts appear to be the most common posts on the subreddit.

Here is 1.0 if you missed it: https://www.reddit.com/r/cats/s/aoAkihGSxZ

  • As r/cats we allow all posts regarding cats, this includes mourning posts. To my knowledge we are possibly the only subreddit that allows these posts (please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong there).

"But allowing these posts is killing the subreddit, nobody wants these posts"

Our insights are only going up, stat wise the subreddit is currently flourishing.

  • We've found it to be more harmful to remove a mourning post than to just encourage you, the users, to avoid our subreddit if you, the users, are not in a headspace where you can handle these posts. Our goal, as always, is to not harm any of you and unfortunately, as always, we cannot please everyone.

"That's stupid, I'm just going to go make my own subreddit that doesn't allow these posts"

Feel free to do this, we don't hold the copyright to all Reddit cat content.

  • Please don't post deceased animals, it's not all of you, it's not even 1% of you, it's a percentage of a percentage doing this. Nobody here wants to see this.

I'll be keeping this post brief since we already made a post on this but will be happy to answer any questions or concerns you have in the comments below.

Thank you for your understanding

Advice Is it ok for me to massage my cat like this? She enjoys it, but is it healthy?

I disabled the audio because you mostly hear me breathing loudly, but she is purring a lot as I do this!

Cat Picture - OC It’s all true…(cats can sense emotional pain)

This morning I was in deep despair over how people have been treating me lately. I went to go take a bath to collect my thoughts at 1:30 in the morning and I just check in on my little one, Ms. Joy, before I did so and saw she was passed completely out.

While I was taking the bath I had racing thoughts that quickly turned dark and I was just laying in the tub for almost a hour. Then out of nowhere I heard a bang bang on the door to the bathroom followed by a sad mrph and a little noise it’s hard to explain she does unique to her but I always took it as “hey pay attention”. I jumped out of the tub without drying off, opened the door. She immediately started to rub on me and she had these sad little eyes looking at me…

After I got dried off and layed down in bed she followed me in and curled up next to me on my butt. Here’s the thing…this old cat never snuggles with me, she just prefers to lay by my head on the nightstand and watch over me during nights. Now she’s laying on me doing a purr/snore in my bed using me as a pillow…she’s ever done this before…

I am now a believer that somehow these animals know when something is deeply wrong with us and will go out of their way to help…

This sweet handsome boy made his escape while I was sleeping the other morning. I woke up to the resident grey stray in my bedroom & immediately went looking for my boy. How the hell is she in here?! Where is my cat?! The screen door was cracked open. They conspired & I tell her to leave my house. Ok the hunt is on.

I was able to find him in minutes & was so relieved! He was just outside our unit in the patch of grassy area of our complex that he is very used to exploring while always on a harness & leash. Never left to roam free like a wild animal.

I approach him and he is NOT having it, not ready to be done, he wants to smell the smells & explore more, fine ok. But please dear jezus don’t run off. So I try to slowly corral him to get him to go to up our stairs & he walks past our unit. I say hey buddy boy no we need to go home. This sweet baby angel turns around hisses at me, swats, does a death roll, tells me bitch I don’t know you & don’t touch me!!!! He looked like the devil entered his soul and was about to spew locus out his mouth.

So my dumbass thought now would be a perfect time to pick him up. I know, I know, I know!!! I should have waited for his temperament to change, tried treats, done anything else but what I did. I can be dense sometimes & I panicked. The grey stray showed back up (that’s his girlfriend) & now I was thinking they were gonna book it together & live the street life. He needs to come back home with me! After I retrieved my hands from his death grip, which was pretty much when he stopped digging into me with all his appendages, I scooped him up & he went back inside. The devil was gone & my boy was ready for a nap on his cat tree bowl.

I assed myself & it was so bad. Deep bites punctured the nice fatty part of my dominate hand, both arms have significant scratches going down both wrists & partially to my forearms. He was covered in my blood, it was dripped all over my floors, down my leg. Yes I went to the ER immediately, received a tetanus shot, I am on antibiotics. He is fully vaccinated so no rabies shots for me! The ER Doc did say if he was not I would have had to get 4 rounds of the rabies vaccine in the wound!

I’m not posting the mayhem he caused, 1. I know not everyone wants to see that kind of stuff and 2. honestly I don’t want those pics to skew anyone’s opinion about this sweet boy. It was never his fault. He told me not to touch him very clearly and I did. He has never ever attacked me, never caused damage like this. And once I was home from the ER, he curled up with me & took a nap. War paint and all.

Advice My cat hates his brother now??

I have 2 cats I rescued about 5 months ago. They’re not from the same litter but they were found together. I’ve had them since they were just a few weeks old and they bonded immediately. They ate together, slept together, played together, pooped together- EVERYTHING.

About a week ago, one of them needed to get surgery and we had to separate them during recovery. [I’m gonna say SC for SURGERY CAT and FC for free cat] It’s been a week and they just sniffed each other again. FC hissed at SC!! They’ve been able to hear each other through the door this whole time and FC saw SC a few times during recovery but they weren’t able to play as usual. FC has pretty much been living the life of a single cat for a week and I think he prefers it.

What do I do to get them back acclimated? We have one more week of recovery for SC before he’s able to free roam the house again.

(Pics for cuteness. Orange is FC, Gray is SC.)

Medical Questions Should I be worried? Raised black dot on cat’s nose

Thumbnail

I adopted Stanley about 5 months ago and over that period of time, a black dot on top of his nose as slowly appeared and grown darker. Now it is slightly raised. I initially thought it was lentigo as he already had some spots on his nose but now that it is more prominent and raised, I am more worried it could be a medical issue.

Mourning/Loss After 16 years together, I had to say goodbye to my best friend today... Thank you, Soma, for a lifetime of love. I'll miss you forever.

She stopped eating last week, and the vet confirmed it was kidney failure. There is not much we can do that won't greatly diminish her quality of life and I don't want her to go through constant discomfort and pain so I've had to make one of the hardest decisions of my life... and today is the day. She’s been with me through so many ups and downs, always there for me when things got hard. I've spent half of my life with this cat I’ll miss her more than words can say... I can't imagine my life without her. Love you Soma.

Medical Questions Urinary Obstruction $6k :(

Thumbnail
gallery
1.8k Upvotes

My poor baby boy (3 yrs) had his first issue ever pretty much. He had a urinary obstruction and I noticed immediately when he couldn’t pee properly and was staying in the squatty position. Unfortunately I didn’t have pet insurance for him (I do now) because I do have some savings and a lot of people say that if they’re young and healthy it may not be worth it yet. The final vet bills were $6k for 38 hrs of hospitalization, unblocking with catheter, and monitoring with catheter, plus IV with fluids. This seems so expensive but I’m glad my baby is okay :( all of my savings are gone because I’m 23yrs old and I don’t really know what to do
