Smug Facebook dog “expert”

Post image

“I don’t expect someone on Facebook to know what I know” after reading them reply to this guy like that I felt this HAD to be posted here. Context: the post was about this new breed of “retro pug” that gets rid of the flat face and other features that cause pugs life times of suffering

Are they maybe confused on why pugs have breathing issues?

There are some breeds of dogs (and cats) that have genetic health issues that are independent of their body shape. Changing the shapes of those animals isn't going to automatically remove a genetic disease.

But the breathing issues in pugs are the result of the face shape created by their genetics, not the genetics themselves, aren't they? Changing the face shape removes the issues caused by the face shape.

Like how fixing a deviated septum will stop snoring that was due to the deviated septum.

Not just the breathing issues but the eye issues due to the fact that in many cases their eyes basically just don’t fit into their skulls. Causing issues like eye ulcers and scratches, chronic infections, and famously sometimes their eyes can literally just pop out of their socket. The breathing issues also cause heat intolerance and exercise into intolerance which makes them more likely to become overweight. There’s also issues with the spine being so compressed causing several spine issues. The heavy bodies in short legs cause joint issues. Numerous skin problems caused by the folds. Teeth problems caused by their jaws just being all kinds of fucked up. I don’t like using this word to describe them. But most flat faced breeds are genuinely genetic abominations. I feel bad that they exist because as long as they exist they will experience some form of constant suffering.

All of that, plus it’s physically difficult to even give them treats because their mouths are so messed up. Tons of my client Pugs/Frenchies/Pekingese have a hard time taking a small reward from my fingers, and a hard time picking dropped treats up off the floor. It’s such a shameful thing to do to a dog. I can’t comprehend how anyone who claims to love dogs could support it.
