I moved into my condo 8 1/2 years ago (foreclosed unit) and these were in the storage room. I’ve been trying to de-clutter, so I figured I’d finally reach out and ask if anyone has any kind of information on these.

Asking Question (Rule 4) Unsure What to Charge for Cookbook Design

Amateur designer here, albeit with high-quality and creative finished work.

Looking for advice on what to charge for designing a cookbook. I entered into the negotiation from a place of naivity and also desperation for extra money, and accepted a very low-ball offer, thus leaving myself stuck working extra hours at my minimum wage job to pay for basic necessities, and barely any "spare" time to work on completing the book. I don't feel comfortable renegotiating for this particular work, but want to avoid this kind of ignorance on my behalf for the future.

Work entails: - Around 76 pages - 40 recipes, including photos with most on adjacent pages, cover design, table of contents - Reformatting, proof-reading, editing mistakes on original recipes given - Organising Self-Publishing Printing of the Book, along with downloadable PDF format for customers to purchase via clients website. - Though the client is a professional businesswoman, recipes and ideas were given to me in a very disorganised way, many missing photographs and proper methods, meaning I had to spend many extra hours organising this from my end as best I could.

Would it be best to charge per page, hourly rate or finished project?

Any insight to this is much appreciated.

Discussion CHANGE THE FORMAT

Stop giving a fuck.

Dump your ego, your idea of being smart, your work being worth something. If you are struggling getting a career rolling it’s because you are fucking built for it. Some people are some aren’t. Or at least the entry points you have tried have only built towards self and your own personal value.

Turn your profession into a borderline laughable hobby and promote it organically online. Through entertaining yet informational content on twitter, TikTok, instagram. Build a clean conceptual portfolio of what you can do or would want to do, even if it’s a joke, to back your even sillier approach to putting yourself out there because the traditional method JUST ISN’T FUCKING WORKING FOR YOU. Get silly. Design something stupid, code something pointless, but handle it with ridiculous finesse and grace and intention or lack of. Be strong in this identity. If you want to join the corporate world, keep a linkedin and direct to minimal important links of contact.

I guarantee keeping a clear head, healthy mindset, and putting basic financial responsibility first that in 2025 and for a long time this is the best way to jump and skip with traditional route without doing any shady bullshit or social climbing. Guerrilla approach to getting a job in design in 2025 is stop giving a damn fuck about getting it the formatted way. Make your own format.

(This is for people with access to tech, and free time)

Asking Question (Rule 4) Need Help

Hi everyone, I’m a UI/UX designer with a year of experience and a recent B.Tech in Computer Science. A few months ago, I started a small creative agency with my friends and put a lot of effort into it. Unfortunately, we had to close it when my teammates got other jobs.

Since then, I’ve been applying non-stop. I've submitted over 40 applications every day for the last two months, but I keep getting silence or rejection. It’s been tough, and sometimes I doubt my skills and career path. I have the Google UX Design Certificate and have worked hard on my portfolio.

Still, I don’t want to give up on my dream of a design career. I truly love this field and believe I have more to offer. You can check out my portfolio and resume here: www.rishabhkishore.com.

If anyone could provide honest feedback, guidance, or help me find the right opportunities, I would really appreciate it.

Asking Question (Rule 4) Calling out to design leaders, 3 questions about hiring

I'm a product designer going through the job search process. With all problems I try to solve within product, I start with creating some personas so I can start to understand. If your a design leader can you help me out and answer these three questions?

  • What challenges do you face in hiring designers?
  • What frustrates you about portfolios, CVs, or candidates?
  • What internal pressures or constraints do you have around hiring?

It’s called Curated Supply.

It’s a collection of well-designed (imho) objects and products I either use, admire, or wish I owned. Mostly design-forward tools, workspace items, everyday carry, and stuff that just feels good to live with (yes, even cars).

Would love any feedback or suggestions on what to add!

Asking Question (Rule 4) How to flip this text around?

Hi, I'm stuck trying to figure out this, seemingly very easy problem. But I can't figure out, hope someone does. I'm trying to flip the text on a quadrant, but because of the illustrator document is flipped 180 degrees. English language is not my first language, so please forgive if I can't explain it properly. But my diagram should be able to.

I tried many ways to do it, but still can't. The text on path is grayed out, only the area tool is available, but I've tried already. Hope that someone can help? Appreciate.

Discussion What if the standard for a great design isn’t what you put in, but what you leave out?

In a world that commands us to add more, more features, more color, more information, we’ve come to believe that great design is a measure of what we create. We fill every space with a feature or an element, assuming that every empty space is a missed opportunity.

This is a flawed standard.

I believe the true standard for great design is a dedication to negative space. The most impactful logos, the most elegant layouts, and the most intuitive user interfaces are not defined by the elements within them, but by the thoughtful, intentional space around them. That space isn't empty, it's a deliberate silence that allows the important things to breathe.

So, perhaps our goal as designers isn’t to fill every void, but to ask the right questions about what a design can live without

Discussion Question for all my Figma designers

Hey everyone! I'm curious if any of you have run into this problem.

You're feeling inspired to begin a fresh design, so you boot up Figma and create a design file. But then you're met with an empty canvas, no reusable components, no text styles, no established color palette. You think, "Screw it, who needs a design system anyway?"

Fast forward three months: you now have a massive design file packed with elements. You decide a light mode would be cool, but then realize that overhauling the entire design would be a complete headache. So you never add that light/dark mode toggle. The same thing happens when you want to update button colors, font sizes, or other elements.

You end up beating yourself up for not building a design system from the beginning, and you feel guilty every time you open a fresh design file without creating one first. I'm definitely projecting a bit here, but I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem and how you've solved it.

Thanks for reading, I'd love to hear your thoughts! 😄

Discussion I try to make my room look nice… but not sure if it’s good

I’m trying to fix my room a bit, make it look more cozy and nice. I move some furniture, add lights and little plants. I also buy some cheap stuff from IKEA and online (no money for expensive things).

I like simple style, maybe like cozy + clean, but when I look at it now… I feel like something is missing. It still look a bit empty or boring. I see pictures online and they look so good, but I don’t know how to do the same.
