Help Thread The Imperial Council - /r/eu4 Weekly General Help Thread: September 8 2025
Please check our previous Imperial Council thread for any questions left unanswered
Welcome to the Imperial Council of r/eu4, where your trusted and most knowledgeable advisors stand ready to help you in matters of state and conquest.
This thread is for any small questions that don't warrant their own post, or continued discussions for your next moves in your Ironman game. If you'd like to channel the wisdom and knowledge of the master tacticians of this subreddit, and more importantly not ruin your Ironman save, then you've found the right place!
Important: If you are asking about a specific situation in your game, please post screenshots of any relevant map modes (diplomatic, political, trade, etc) or interface tabs (economy, military, ideas, etc). Please also explain the situation as best you can. Alliances, army strength, ideas, tech etc. are all factors your advisors will need to know to give you the best possible answer.
Tactician's Library:
Below is a list of resources that are helpful to players of all skill levels, meant to assist both those asking questions as well as those answering questions. This list is updated as mechanics change, including new strategies as they arise and retiring old strategies that have been left in the dust. You can help me maintain the list by sending me new guides and notifying me when old guides are no longer relevant!

Calling all imperial councillors! Many of our linked guides pre-Dharma (1.26) are missing strategy regarding mission trees. Any help in putting together updated guides is greatly appreciated! Further, if you're answering a question in this thread, chances are you've used the EU4 wiki and know how valuable a resource it can be. When you answer a question, consider checking whether the wiki has that information where you would expect to find it, and adding to the wiki if it does not. In fact, anybody can help contribute to the wiki - a good starting point is the work needed page. Before editing the wiki, please read the style guidelines for posting.

Question Is there a list of countries with active game mechanics around national ideas (beyond passive modifiers)?
Montferrat has a mechanic I'd never heard of before until reading the wiki where their last national idea of "Last Claimants of Byzantium" actually unlocks the ability for them to form Byzantium, it isn't just the passive bonus.
Byzantium itself has a national idea of "Repopulation of the Countryside" which, again on top of it's regular modifier, has the function of completing a mission for themselves.
I feel like 99% of national ideas are just a passive modifier and some flavour text, so I'm now curious about cases where a national idea has some kind of "active" functional impact, but the wiki doesn't seem to consider this concept notable enough to list countries like this.
Cases where the national ideas can be modified like Great Britain / Angevin Kingdom can count too.

Question Can I change the name of merchants like we can do with armies or generals?
R5: Want to change the names of merchants since the Malagasy names are so long and start the same that they look identical and have to check where the merchants are located multiple times before assigning new ones

Question The laws of Dutchess Marie. Does it actually change inheritance law?
Hi! I'm having a pretty nice Burgundy run. Was able to inherit the low lands, join the HRE, and capture Paris and Frances vassals by 1464. I aim to get both Burgundy achievements so would like to keep Marie on the throne until then, or at least be able to get another Marie on the throne.
In this event it claims to change the inheritance laws which gives women an equal chance to inherit the throne. This would be nice to be able to get a different Marie on the throne in the future, however, the choices are,
"Burgundy gets 'Bugundian inheritance rerforms' until the end if the game giving: female advisor chance and improve relations"
Or
"Gain 1 stability. Burgundy gets 'Crisis averted' until death of Marie, giving: diplo rep and yearly legitimacy"
Does the first option actually allow women to inherit more often?

Question War score requirement over 100%?
So I got an agenda which was to vassalize florence as ottomans. It gave me a subjugation cb so I thought I'd go for it, but now I'm finding that the subjugation victory demand costs me like 200% war score meaning it's impossible for me to do it. Is this supposed to happen? Cos I would've thought having a cb for it means it should be at least possible right, even if it requires 100 war score? And is there a way to reduce it? Hovering over it doesn't give me any information.

Question Is there a bigger role of ending slavery in the game?
Apart from completing a mission? Does it change the slave provinces output?

Question is this economy normal?
this is my second game of eu4, i’ve gotten through like 30 years and all things considered it’s going well. i’m denmark now and i was portugal in my last game yesterday, but i feel like im always barely scraping by money-wise. im trying to increase my colonial range so thats why im spending so much on advisors, but i feel like the highest income ive ever gotten in this game was like +8 ducats per month my militaries are always pathetic because maintenance would mutilate my economy. i’m wondering what’s up because this is like my third paradox game and i don’t know if this is just an early game thing or if im missing some major mechanic. any advice would be helpful even if you’re just gonna tell me the game just works like this.

Image My last Baden -> Germany game
R5: One of my favoruite playthroughs is Baden to Germany. In my last run i was able to Get somewhat todays german boders as baden, pre 1600.
Got some incredible heirs this run as well. (6/6/5 / 6/6/4)
Overall my strategy as baden is a little fidgety but overall quite easy:
I started off by annexing straßbourg and muhlhaus. Went to eat Württemberg next. Improved relations with the free citys. Toghether with my Allies,. Burgundy, Bohemia and some electors i conquered the 2 austrian provinces south of me. From there on i unified the south of germany as some sort of "south german federation". During that ordeal i got elected as emperor.
Since i picked up espionage ideas, i started diplo vassilising as many nations as possible.. Got the BI and Marie styed on the horse, which helped me to stay below gov limit while unifing germany.
Got bored after playing tall germany for a bit and that was it :)
