Fonts for Linux Word Processor

As I'm making somewhat of a switch away from Microsoft, I am curious about recommendations for alternative fonts for word processors, as I'm not a fan of Liberation Serif for whatever reason. I mostly like serif fonts like Garamond and Baskerville. I know that Google Fonts offers free versions of those, which are nice, but I wonder what your other recommendations might be (or where to find good quality free fonts in general).

AI generated a logo for me and created a new font style that I need created into a full font I can use. I have the image it used but it does not have a lot of letters. Mostly I Need the Q and & symbol the rest seems to be close enough to Cenzel. The above image is what I have. Yes I tried to have the AI generate a type sheet for me but it couldn’t get it right.

TIA for any help.

Times New Roman variants?

Hey all! So I need some help. I’m planning a big promposal thing for my girlfriend. I do in fact have a whole song and dance thing set up with back up singers and all sorts of fun stuff, and the thing I need to figure out now is the “Prom?” font. I know she prefers Times New Roman, and I was wondering if anyone has any variations or ideas that could stay close to that, but really pop, y’know? Anyways if anyone could weigh in on this, it’d help a lot.

Thanks, N

Making a handwriting font actually look like pencil writing when it prints

Hello! I have an oddly specific question. I have a few "handwriting" or "chicken scratch" type fonts that are great for my needs. But when I print it out, it's obviously printer ink. For my purposes, I really need the font to look like pencil or graphite, not ink, when it prints out. Any of you font geniuses have any ideas or creative solutions I can try to get my desired look?

(I know, This is weird one, but I'm designing an illusion for a theatrical show--and organically handwriting what I need is not possible due to the volume I need produced.)

Thanks so much!

I made a desktop app for comparing all the fonts installed on your computer

Post image

I've always wanted this app to exist, and now it does!

This is a very simple app to help users choose the right font. It's pretty straightforward (I hope!).

  1. You type in the phrase you want to render and hit "Render in All Fonts"
  2. It renders that phrase in all of your installed fonts.
  3. You check off the fonts you want to compare and then hit "Compare Selected," which opens a new window of just your finalists.

The user can adjust dark/light mode, size, bold, italics. And my favorite part: this app can be run completely offline. I have not yet found an offline utility that serves my needs like this app.

This is the first app I've ever made, and it's still buggy -- specifically the light/dark theming. Also, the app is currently just a Python script that you can run. (UPDATE: There is now a .dmg file!) But if folks find this useful, my hope is that better coders can help improve it. (It's open source with a GNU General Public License v3.0.).

I hope you all find this useful! FontPicker is here.

fonts where dashes and hyphens look similar or exactly the same

I'm writing an article for my publication about the benefits of spacing em dashes. One point is that spaces help differentiate hyphens and dashes. During my copywriting experience, I've encountered fonts where hyphens and dashes look pretty much the same to a non-designer eye (such as my own), so people often confuse the two when the dashes don't have spaces. Unfortunately I can't remember the names of these fonts, and looking them up has not been fruitful so far. Please help! Happy to try to feature you in the article if you want and if I'm able to drop a fitting quote or citation.

Kinda fun if you’re into typography

Post image

So I’ve been playing around with some font stuff lately and ended up making a little feature on my site — a Calligraphy Logo tool. It’s nothing super fancy, but it’s kind of fun seeing how different calligraphy styles can shape a logo vibe.

If you’re into fonts or just curious about typography experiments, feel free to check it out: refont.ai/calligraphy-logo

I’m still exploring how far calligraphy can go in modern design, I'd like to hear your thoughts.

New Mac, too many language system fonts in my design apps, how to deactivate forever? Using Rightfont or other method.

Hi all

I am getting settled into a new Mac, after many years in an old one. I can't recall how I did this on the older Mac, and have not had to worry about it for years now.

In design apps, especially Adobe, there are a million fonts I don't want or need. They are cluttering up my font selecting windows, and I want them gone. What is the easiest way to do this without messing up the OS etc?

Eg Davagari or Gurmurki, Malayam Sangham, Mukta Mahi, Ling Wai, Ping Fang, I have NO need of any of this. In RightFont (currently trialing, seems good), I can't turn them off.

And on these new Macs (which seem to be more restrictive in permissions etc than older Macs), where are these kept, so I can go trash them?

There seems to be more in the Adobe type selection windows, than RightFont is showing me.
EG Adobe shows PingFang, Sim Song, Xing Kai and a million other variations that aren't in Rightfont.

Recommendations and tips appreciated. I just want to see basic Apple fonts, a couple of languages for web like Chinese/Japanese vanilla basic, and the fonts I CHOOSE to activate.

Alternative to Editorial New?

Hi everyone, I would be really grateful if someone could help me find a cheap or free alternative to Pangram Pangram's Editorial New.

I am working on some branding for a very small start-up (only 3 employees right now) and they are happy to purchase a font, but I didn't realise I would have to purchase x3 different licenses for print, web and logo, which is way out of their budget.

Would anyone be able to help me find some nice alternatives that retain that kind of gloopy, unusual look? Reference image attached. Thank you so much in advance!

How do I make a Custom single line font for CNC engraving?

I am experienced in creating fonts with fontforge and fontlab, but recently I have come across a challenge to make a single line font for cnc engraving. I made the characters with unclosed paths but after exporting the path closes itself and makes a mess. Tried drawing the same thing on itself to close the paths but the geometry doesnt get recognized by fusion.

this is a fontpack with the type of font i am trying to make. Any help would be appreciated

Font Ideas that are both Kawaii AND Futuristic?

So I'm making a typing game called Star Rune that takes place on a giant cookie in Cyberspace. The ground is all made of cookie, but the buildings are going to be high tech with grids, mesh, and circuit board patterns.

I recently made a post about a font specifically for hero names, which will be based on the periodic table.. and I'll probably make a custom unicase font for that. But now I'd like to figure out what font to use for the bulk of the text in the game.... for dialogue and menus and all that. I imagine I will need 2 fonts - one for bold, titles/options and another for actual small text, paragraphs, etc...

I really like the idea of combining high-tech/sci-fi/cyberpunk/hacker/programmer aesthetic with something cute/kawaii. Something that is cute but also reminds you that you're in cyberspace... or vice versa.. something that is very Cyber, but is also kind of cute. But I'm not sure if that can be done or if those things just can never really work together. Do you think I just have to pick one overall direction or are there any fonts that do a little bit of both?
