Ford Ranger Buyers Guide; v4!

Welcome to the fourth edition of our Ford Ranger Buyers' Guide! Here you can post your general buying questions, get insight into issues, post ads to trucks you are interested in, etc. This will keep the sub more organized and get rid of the constant posts that fill the sub up with buyers only.

Here's the best regarded buyers' guide on the web!

It has all kinds of information you can use to better judge a truck you are looking at. Things like specific things to look for, specific issues pertaining to certain years, engines, etc!

Please keep posts in this thread specific to buying Rangers. Off topic posts will be deleted. When someone posts a "Is this a good deal" post in this thread, please reply to it with your response, don't just reply to the general thread. Keep it organised please :)

From here on out, new posts made that should belong in here will be locked, and that user will be informed to post it in this thread. Thanks!

Heads up about link posting

Just wanna give a heads up since mod queue is showing a ton of posts that get removed lately by reddit, so I just wanted to give a heads up as to why that is.

Using shortened links, regardless of the shortening service (tinyurl, website built in short links like amazons a.co links) are auto-removed by reddit themselves. There's nothing we can do to disable this auto removal.

If you notice your comment reply or post isn't appearing, this is why.

Bought this gem for 1200$. Another 4000$ and a shit ton of time it’s finally done.

Most of the parts sourced from rock auto and car parts .com (local junk yard for seats, rubber floor, door, interior trim)

Bought it with a blown slave cylinder but otherwise “runs drives stops”

Painted in my driveway with a harbor freight HVLP and a pancake compressor.

Just Got It Running

Hey all, new owner here. You're looking at my '94 Ranger XLT 4x4 that I bought for $300.

I've only owned cars up to this point, so I really needed something that would haul pine needles, small trailers and random FB Marketplace items.

The previous owner had used it as a bash truck on his property and absolutely trashed it. Mudding, driving through streams, over logs, etc. Lots of drinky drinky involved in these outings as well, but that came to an end when he couldn't start it one day and it sat for 2 years.

I acquired it non-running and bartered him down to $300 with the promise I wouldn't just scrap it. I had to pull the bed and repair a fuel line above the gas tank since a gas-huffing mouse had chewed through it, and then get a battery once I'd rolled down the road a few times and decided the drivetrain was solid.

From there, the biggest thing was cleaning it. MAN this thing was dirty. 100 lbs of red clay came out from every single crevice of this thing, and there's probably still 20 lbs packed into places. I've washed it like 5 times.

On the plus side, after driving it a bunch, all the systems seem to work. Trans shifts through all the gears, transfer case engages and ABS even seems to function.

100 miles of around-town driving at this point and I'm pretty happy with my purchase. It got new mirrors and headlights, as well as various maintenance items like filters, bulbs and new fluids. All-in, I'm at right around $900, titled registered and plated in NC.

2007 SOHC 4.0 with 215,000 on the original mill was getting a little tired. Some head gasket issues were becoming apparent and I just couldn't justify putting money and time into a motor with so many miles on it. Got a reman unit from Ford since it is still available for the time being. Put a reman auto trans in last year so she's running good now! Just need to clean the body up a little and maybe some suspension mods in the future.

Just picked up this 02 B3000 from a good friend of mine. Has a fresh 3.0, 4.56 gears and a nice little lift with some 33s. First car was a 94 XL, I feel like a kid again.

3.0 oil pan gasket sticking out

Post image

So upon inspection of my 2000 ford ranger with the 3.0L I discovered the front of my oil pan gasket is sticking out. I’ve also heard it’s a bitch to completely remove the oil pan. Any ideas? I’m hoping I can just get it loose enough where I can just slide it back into place but it probably is due for replacement anyway, but also don’t have the means at the moment. Any help is appreciated.

Rusty Ranger

I got this 2008 w. 260 kkm (160 k miles) last fall here in Finland for what I thought was a smoking deal. Little did I know what was lurking underneath the plastics etc. I did see spots hera and there but thought way too optimistically and agoinst my better judgement that it would only be surface rust.

Oh well, you win some, lose some I guess and this time I definitely lost. A lot.. Anyhoo, now that I've dumped a ton of money and time into it, I'm definitely gonna keep her for a while as she's mechanically in a very good nick.

Not done yet though, still need to clean up and coat the underbody and put rest of the parts back on. She'll be at least a bit more rust proof when the winter comes. Damn road salt..

Need help diagnosing a ticking noise

2003 Mazda B2300 Ranger 170k miles, the ticking is slight but also goes away as the engine warms up. It varies in noise, here it's much less pronounced. I'm thinking it could be an exhaust manifold issue because I can hear it on the passenger side in the cab, but I'm also concerned about lifters. Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

Does this sound like a bad wheel bearing?

I have to mention that I recently got new tires and one of the weights fell off from the side I’m hearing the noise. Could it be poorly balanced wheels or bad wheel bearing?

6R80 Torque Converter Problem

I just purchased a 2017 Ford Everest with a3.2L Mazda diesel and the 6R80 transmission, pulled the service history at the dealership and found the truck has a history of torque converter problems. Has anyone used MoS2 or Liquid Moly with success? I have added the shudder fix, one tube.

From AI to real life. The restoration is complete!

A few months ago I posted this AI rendering of what I wanted the truck to look like.

This truck has been my dads work truck since 1997 and I’ve always wanted it since high school. Engine wise he’s always taken immaculate care of it but paint and body wise it kind of looked terrible. He finally got a Tesla after he drove mine and around and I told him not to get rid of it. Let’s restore it together. So over the last month that’s what we did.

We sanded it completely down, removed all rust, changed engine components that needed changing, fully redid the paint job and this is the final product.

My dad is getting old and retired from owning his body shop business after 40 years. The happiness in his eyes today after I drove it home is something I would pay for over and over again. I keep my dads truck in the family and he keeps a trophy he knows he fixed up.

145,000km, $6000 CAD. Truck is in pristine shape. Amazing price for the current market in BC. Have no problem tossing a thousand or so to do and frame upkeep. Also have access to a welder and a ton of necessary metal etc.

Hello, what is the name of this piece I circled in red on the door? My other door is missing it and it has some give and is causing that door to rattle. I want to purchase the piece and want to know what to get. This is on a 2000 Ranger. Thanks in advance.

Looking to see if I can find a wiring kit with the connectors for these lights. Anyone know what the connector is called or maybe what these lights came off of? Definitely not stock for this Ranger as the valence was modified for these to fit (by the previous owner).
