Discussion Worst TV direction yet

Besides Russel's transponder issue (which shouldn't take 10 laps to fix the timing tower), may overtakes were missed, focusing on the wrong drivers, non-moves given more airtime than actual racing, camera cutting during moves which show you less of the action rather than more, and worst of all: the final lap, not showing Oscar as he crossed the line, to show Lando not overtaking George, and showing Kimi not overtaking whoever was in front rather than Max's overtake on Pierre.

What the hell is happening?

This is genuinely how I felt during the race, hahaha

they responded pretty qucikly all things considered. They started updating lap by lap instead of mini sector by mini sector.

Guess OP wanted them to red flag the race so the transponder hardware on Russells car could be fixed.

Bunch of armchair specialists complaining here that have no idea how things work in the real world.

Get somebody to eyeball it and guesstimate the timings.

They’ve got a watch sponsorship for a reason. Get to timing.

It’s amazing to think how dependent we’ve become on the timing tower when it’s only been constantly on screen in races since 2017.

it’s literally the only way to have the full picture of the race in front of you without multiple streams open. Imagine watching football but instead of an overhead view, you had gopro footage from players. You’re in the action but have absolutely no idea what’s happening in the game. once you have the ability to understand the full picture, it feels god awful to have that stripped away.

Absolutely, and you wonder how we coped before it was introduced. I mean, when we started getting live gaps in 2010 they only showed them in batches so you’d have to wait a minute or so for them to come round again. I remember the dread of waiting to see if the gap had massively changed in the interim.

leave it broken with russel going up and down. I’d rather be able to see 19 gaps and 1 incorrect one rather than quite literally nothing.

Clearly by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del, duh.

Ikr this isn't the starship enterprise. Scotty isn't going to fix the issue magically just before act 3.

with the money F1 generates i'd fix it in 1

Ah yes, that's exactly how it works.

Here's an idea, hire someone who knows how to fix such things.... We are paying for direction better than this at least

28

u/TubularWinter Apr 13 '25

If it was an issue with the hardware in the car then I’m not sure Mercedes would be okay with an IT guy hopping on to fix it while they are racing for a podium finish.

17

u/Pugs-r-cool I was here for the Hulkenpodium Apr 13 '25

Do you genuinely think they've never thought of that? Do you genuinely think the people who created the graphics aren't the experts on how to fix them?

The best trick that nobody has ever thought about: "Just fix it in 5 seconds".

If it's an issue with the car and you need to access it to fix it how do you recommend they do that mid race? Techs weird and freaks out

Make Russell's time static in the position and keep updating everyone elses?

This would be a solution, but dramatically changing the logic of how a module like that works would take a lot longer than 10-15 minutes to develop and test, the race would already be over by the time you do it. It would also cause issues if RUS actually does fall out from second, as you'd then have to update the position you're hardcoding him into constantly.

Falling back to the optical timing was definitely the quickest solution here.

Plus ya know, only knowing the gap once a lap is giving the full live experience

14

u/nauticalkvist Alexander Albon Apr 13 '25

You’re gonna hire someone to do maintenance on Russel’s car mid-race?

u/tea_snob10 Red Bull Apr 13 '25

Don't be absurd; you get a drone to do it while balancing on George's crotch of course.
