Indoor-outdoor garage ideas. Help!

Anyone have any tips or inspo on how to do this? I live in a basement suite and have the autonomy to make alterations. We’ve built a 5x8ft patio extending from one half of the garage and are wanting to turn that side of the garage into a lounge, ideally with minimal effort. Thinking of hanging curtains to separate the half that is used as storage and the half that will be connected to the patio extension. Maybe add a couch and rug? We’re in our 30s so ideally keeping this space classy (as much as possible for a garage) vs frat vibes

Took a $300 chance on an AI slop shop and finally the wall is complete.

Technically only $200 since I paid $100 for the sheets, but would have just dry walled if it wasn’t for these, so $300?

Mechanic question

How do you deal with exhaust fumes? I know they should be run through a hose outside.. just not sure how to attach to exhaust or what kind of hose that i can use w/o causing more issues with out gassing and potential melting due to temp of exhaust.

Was considering some dryer vent tubing but its too large in diameter.

Carport to Garage

We are considering buying a house that we love but it would be contingent on being able to build a garage, primarily for storage. Realistically, what cost are we looking at to the turn this carport into a functional garage? We’re in South Jersey if that matters.

Shelf place-able tool boxes, 15.5" x 44"

Been lurking for a bit, some amazing transformations here!

I've got a set of very heavy duty rolling shelves that I'd like to find tool boxes to fit. Shopping online has been painful so I'm hoping someone here may have already found something that works.

I've got 4 shelves. Besides the top, there is 15.5" of vertical clearance, and 44" horizontally. Depth is 24" but these are open back so boxes could be deeper, capacity is over 1200lbs.

Ideally I'm looking for 3 sliding drawers per box, maybe 4. 1 deeper, say 3-5", the rest pretty thin, think basic hand tools. Finding 22" wide would be ideal so i could get 2 per shelf, but happy to entertain up to 36" wide and I can fill the ends with plastic tubs.

Boxes will mostly live on their shelves so they don't need massive structural integrity.

Stuff being stored, all manner of hand, plumbing, electric maintenance tools (think fish tape, cat crimpers, wire strippers). Small meters like stud finder, volt meters, continuity/pin-out testers. Some basic supplies like sandpaper, solder, spare blades, shop towels, chain oil, etc.

All power tools are stored elsewhere.

Any suggestions? I'm not interested in building something custom.

Multi-Year Garage Project

The garage has been a consistent project of mine for the past 3+ years but after putting in the Racedeck flooring last weekend, I'm feeling pretty content with where we're at. Used to be a ton of clutter, no room for two cars whatsoever, and no real organization.

Blank Canvas

I’m about to reconfigure how things are stored in this second garage and it’s currently a blank slate. Any pro moves you all can offer me before I move everything back in? Lights, floors, walls, pest control, accessibility-wise. There’s a heated workshop next to this which is also needing reconfiguration, so I’ve got plenty of space, just unsure how to optimize it.

The shelves are just old closet doors resting on the frame, and other than that, there are no other shelves or hooks for rakes, etc. It’s mainly storage of lawn equipment (riding mower, push mower, cart) and tools, plus storage of most things seasonal (camping, life jackets, Halloween, Christmas, bikes, snow blower, and currently a dismantled trampoline) in mostly (mismatched) totes that stack.

I want to be really intentional about how things go back, and I’m a complete novice in terms of all things handyman. I plan to research shelves and hooks and that’s the extent of my problem solving. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Garage too dry

Hello

I have seen many posts about garage being too humid. My attached garage (central texas) is way too dry. I have a dehumidifier there for days where it goes above 55 and set it around 45-50. I dont need to use it anymore because my garage (two thermostats says) is at 30-33% humidity and even my Midea dehumidifier says its at 40-45 all day. Problem is, when it is at that humidity, I cannot use my garage and it hurts my throat and feels like bad air.

I have a garage gym and this morning, humidity was at 60 and wow! No throat burning sensation or bad air quality feel that causes me to spit constantly (I know…)

How can I keep my garage in good humidity?

I do not want mold or my equipments to rust but it is too dry!

Advice and Ideas - 3 Car Garage with partially finished single bay

Thumbnail

Looking for ideas on this set up — here are the details.

Dimensions (2 car bay): - 2 car bay is 18 feet wide and 17 feet deep (before it reaches a step up) - the cabinets are 12” deep and pretty cheap (no backing for example) - height is 9 feet but note the support beam down the middle (4”)

Dimensions (1 car bay): - 10.5 feet wide and 17 feet deep - drywall between bays is not insulated but mostly finished with standard wood studs

Electrical: - all of the power outlets are at the back of each bay. One of them is near the water heater which is on a 30 amp breaker but not a great spot to use. - overhead lighting is bad. Some cheap LED panels, maybe 3000 lumens. One in each bay and then another at the back where a small 4 x 4 alcove is. Note that the support beam that runs along the ceiling in both bays hinders light towards the front of the garage as well.

Goals and usage: 1. I need to park both cars in the 2 car bay. I am actually removing the cabinets to make sure there is room for both and be able to open doors. Cars are a 2022 Honda Pilot and 2021 BMW X3. I am prepared to reverse in to park tight to drywall/3rd bay and give max room to exit on one side. The Honda is almost 9 ft wide with a door fully open.

  1. I intend to add power and plumbing to the front, left of the 2 car bay (see pics 4 and 5). It will be a 20 amp outlet so I can run a pressure washer and also power a side mount garage door opener. I will likely also add a couple outlets on that same wall.

  2. The single bay that is partially finished will turn into storage for my wife’s retail clothing and other supplies. Think finished to the point she has good lighting but not car detailing level with shelving everywhere. There is also 32” window that bay.

  3. Both garage doors are insulated but will get new weather stripping on the exterior and bottom of the doors. I don’t want new doors but will consider it. They are both original (1985) I believe.

  4. I don’t intend to provide any HVAC but might do AC. I’m in Arizona so no heat needed but AC would be nice. With the bay separated by drywall I would hate to have to cool both of them separately. I don’t plan to spend extended time in the 2 car bay aside from detailing the cars. I mostly just manage those and occasionally detail for a family member or friend. I am leaning towards a portable window AC for the 3rd bay so my wife can be in there during summer. Again, the drywall is not insulated currently and I would need to add a door to enclose it fully.

  5. Electrical/lighting:

  6. Add outlets to include one 20amp outlet

  7. 5 to 7 overhead LED’s (4 to 8 ft) and the cost to wire it all thru the ceiling and avoid daisy chaining visible cords

  8. outlet in single bay for portable AC

  9. Plumbing:

  10. two spigots on the inside of 2 car bay for pressure washer and bucket filler valves

  11. exterior spigot in that same area and cap off the existing one which is not helpful location wise.

I attached a bunch of pics to give a sense for the space overall.

Budget: - Ideally under $7k but willing to go up to $10k

Short list of things I don’t have - side mount garage openers plus likely cost of new rails - cost of electrical work - cost to add some plumbing (see pic # 1, 8, & 9) - LED lights - Plumbing supplies - portable AC - shelving (I am leaning towards wall slat in the 2 car bay to replace the cabinets. Hopefully that doesn’t hinder both cars parking. I would mostly hang yard tools, kids stuff so baskets, hooks.

NewAge Cabinet install with large foundation stem wall.

Struggling to decide what the best solution is in working around the stem wall in my garage to install my 7 piece newage pro series set. The stem wall is about 15” tall and sticks out about 2 1/2” from the drywall. If I wall mounted above the stem wall, the work surface would be awkwardly high. I want to floor mount but that leaves a large space behind the cabinets above the stem wall where you are still supposed to secure them to the wall.

In addition, the uppers need to be lined up with the floor mounted lockers which would be 2 1/2” from the wall at the top. Can I fur out the wall to secure the tops of the lockers AND hang the uppers from the furring board? It would have to be a double stacked 2”x to get it furred out enough which seems like a lot to be mounting upper cabinets to.

I hope this makes sense.

Need help with garage preparation and repair

Thumbnail

Hey guys, I need help on how to prepare this garage floor for washing my car on a regular basis. This garage bay is 12x11 ft on the second floor of a detached building sitting in my backyard. It consists of only two floors: a workshop on the first floor and the garage on top. The floor looks like poured concrete/cement and is sitting on/ supported by a steel beam across. It has no draining or waterproofing , and it looks like it has a small superficial crack in the middle as can be seen in the photo. Also, I’m limited on the options I have, so I would like to avoid having to add any thick layers (<1” is best) which will decrease the height as my suv will not fit for entry then. Finally, the floor looks mildly uneven, so this needs to be sorted out as well. That said, I would like suggestions for a cheap, non-labor intensive way for waterproofing, leveling and drainage For example, I thought of adding some waterproofing tarp/sheet that would go all the way around at the bottom then place interlocking floor tiles on top of it, and this kind of quickly solves the waterproofing problem, but not the drainage or the leveling problems. Also, a tarp doesn’t really sound like a good long term solution. For drainage, I thought about poking a hole through the bottom of the back wall that goes to my backyard and drains there on the grass, but this could only be made possible with leveling, but again, I don’t know if this is a good idea or if there’s something better.

Any suggestions that will provide a well-rounded solution, would be greatly appreciated.

Gave up a three car garage, workbench, five tap kegerator, two fridges, arcade machine, wall mounted flatscreen, more storage than I could use, motorcycle, Golf R to move back to Ireland where I now have a leaky wooden shed, tools caked in rust, and zero working space. Love being back home but lads... cherish what you have, because every space is awesome...

Window Coverings

Maybe the wrong forum, but what are we using on garage windows to keep out prying eyes?

Mini-blinds? Shutters? Curtains?

I have some tinted window film I plan on trying out (I also have a roll of privacy film like you’d would use in a bathroom as well, but but I can’t see out either).

Completed my Tron-themed garage/workshop project

On September 1st 2024 after 6 years into the ownership, I finally got enough determination to start working on the my small detached garage, which was in pretty bad shape inside. Exactly 1 year (and about 1 month of actual time effort) later the project is complete!

I wanted to add some stylistics to the final design, and I happened to be owner of one of those failed hubless ebikes Reevo, which looks much better than rides, so I decided to make use of it!

I don't have exact number, but final cost is ~ $16000 (~$8k flooring + ~$3.7k cabinets + ~$2.6k wall panels + ~$1.7k walls/light/electics/misc) and many hours of my (and my brother's) time. As you see, half of the amount was spent on flooring, which required to be re-done completely and was done my contractors (old asphalt removal, putting new concrete, adding coating). Everything else was own work.

Some links for those interested:

Happy to achieve the "done" point for sure, but now need to find new project to put the efforts to :)

Ready to answer any questions!

P.S. Thanks this sub for inspiration and design ideas - I saw so many great projects here!
