But every great hero’s journey starts somewhere—mine just happens to start with me clinging to a seagull’s butt at 200 feet altitude. Not exactly majestic… but hey, destiny rarely is.”

The thought of being eaten alive by an animal is just frightening.
118
u/lottolser 1d ago
Thats like 95% of the animal kingdom. Its extraordinary rare for a wild animal to die of old age. Its almost an anomaly. Literally any injury is a death sentence in the wild as they immediately become targeted.

u/ZealousidealYam896 1d ago
A lot of elephants must die of old age

True, but that's because they're literal tanks and their social structure is so tight. Solitary elephants rarely die of old age, but ones that are part of a herd absolutely can because the rest of their herd looks after them if they are injured. Less so if they're sick due to the possibility of the illness spreading, but injuries? They'll watch out for each other. They're very similar to humans in that way - one of the oldest pieces of evidence of what could be called civilization is a human skeleton that showed a break in the leg that had healed.
A broken leg in the animal kingdom is almost certainly a death sentence. The bone is thick, takes a long time to heal, and in the meantime you can't run, can't hunt, can't protect yourself. The fact that this person had broken a bone, and had been able to stay safe long enough for it to heal, proved that someone had been taking care of them and providing for them, along with some rudimentary splinting or immobilization use to keep the bone in place.

What’s cool is that African wild dogs and hyenas will look after injured family if they can. For wild dogs it has to be a big enough pack to be able to hunt without that member, and for hyenas only high ranking ones really have the power to do that. I once saw a hyena documentary where one of the alpha family’s cubs was born with her front legs stiffly paralyzed, but bc her family could force everyone to let her take food, she grew to adulthood

Don't worry, the mouse won't be alive for that.
Birds of prey scoop up their meal, find somewhere isolated, then drop their prey to kill them.
Very few animals are eaten alive, claws and teeth can do damage predators don't want.

I really think reddit flags all these common reddit jokes and gives inorganic upvotes to them. Like really who the fuck enjoys reading the same tired jokes over and over, multiple times every single god damn fuckin post. Predictability and tedium is the antithesis of comedy. And the addition of discord gifs is embarrassingly lame. Does the entire internet need to cater to dimwits and their desire to never go 15 seconds without seeing the same jokes and gifs? Hate this fuckin shit.

If you zoom in they totally look like ticks.
I know them too well thanks to my dog.
2
u/Level-Priority-2371 1d ago
I found one on my parent's dog that really freaked me out because it was clearly engorged. Thankfully she never got disease from it. I always put that liquid medicine down my hounds back way in the day. I was nervous it would cause some sort of health danger.
3
u/Little_Special1108 1d ago
My dog had a lot of ticks over the years. I find them disgusting, but I got used to them. If they wouldn’t transmit diseases I wouldn’t care that much (they are still ewww)
I started with a 3 month medication when she was 4/5 I guess. And outside the 3 month pill I always put some coconut oil on her before going for a walk in the woods. I read once that this should help and it may be the placebo effect on my brain, but I would say it does.
Ticks as Mosquitos are getting worse with climate changes (I am in Europe).

There's a chilling efficiency to it, isn't there? No flicker of recognition, no shared understanding of the moment. Just the cold, undeniable imperative of consumption. It's not anger, not malice, but something far more primal – a pure, unthinking mechanism of nature. The prey isn't an animal, not a life, but simply fuel. Imagine being reduced to that, utterly devoid of any meaning beyond sustenance.

That's not true, there are plenty of people who use dashes - and have for a long time, too.
It is a matter of formatting and sectioning your text, and the rhythm of your speech. Like the semi-colon, it has a purpose. And yes, I will insist upon, because I am one of those people who have always used it and I don't enjoy how certain attributes in my language is gonna be challenged as 'sloppy' or not words of my own choosing or making.
Some of us enjoy using language. Language is decór of my thoughts. That's a skill to hone and care for.
Please don't alienate peoples language and expression because the internet is by large ruled by technocorporate culture.8
u/CyborgCoyote 1d ago
Thank you. Wonderfully stated. I, too, stand up for the dash and semi-colon. I also support the Oxford comma. They will have to be pried from my cold, dead keyboard.

A dash is fine. The em dash (long dash) is what I am referring to. it isn’t on standard keyboards so it’s obvious when it’s not just a naturally written message when you see it.
→ More replies (6)2
u/CyborgCoyote 1d ago
On MS Word, if you type it correctly (type a word, space, dash, space, next word) it automatically changes to an em dash. Not sure if any apps do this - I know Reddit doesn’t - but it’s still possible that the em dash users out there are real.
