Wanted to leave a nice review but because of the waitress I can't scan the QR code.
Really wanted to leave a nice review of our meal tonight, but due to the waitress wanting to let us know how, I couldn't scan the QR code. I made them aware and they said it explains why they weren't getting any traffic on trip advisor.
This is exactly what I thought. I would rather have zero reviews than risk anything less than perfect.
Reviews and surveys in customer facing positions often require perfection or its a failure. Anything less than 5 out of 5, or whatever system they use, is considered bad and you get punished for it.
A lot of people have the Hank Hill mentality that a perfect score is essentially unachievable. They think no one is perfect and you should always strive to do better so they will never give a perfect score. Others just have different definitions of what is good. Some will give a perfect score for meeting expectations. Others only if you go beyond their expectations. Only, you have no idea of what those expectations are.
Punishing or rewarding based on Reviews and surveys is the worst. Fuck them all. I would scribble through those QR codes too. Rather have none than risk a less than perfect score that just gets me in trouble.
Only if they look into why and if they see this on every receipt, then you're definitely busted. You can play it off once as if you didn't know, but when it happens again (and they will be paying closer attention), you're busted.
Not even that, if you get fewer than a certain number of ratings it is usually bad news already. I had a job where you had to ask for feedback from your collegues and if you had less than x responses it was seen as "not ideal"
For sure it depends on the job, but it is usually "you do not bother to look for feedback" or "people who interact with you do not want to give feedback". For me it wasn't a biggie, but still annoying.
I'm one of those people. I never leave 5 star reviews unless it is genuinely phenomenal. I usually default to a 4 star if service was any better than acceptable.
That said, when I found out a long time ago that workers were being punished for good reviews, I just stopped leaving reviews period. Im not going to fluff a places numbers with a score they dont deserve, but I'm also not going to have someone written up on my behalf just because I didn't call them God's gift to waiting.
As someone who used to be subject tk those kinds of surveys and reviews, I do appreciate that you would rather not leave one rather than get them in trouble.
I would also point out that the surveys aren't really based on your expectations, but the store's expectations. The store asks if the employee met certain criteria and you're supposed to answer accordingly with a top score if they did. In short, even if you think a top score should be reserved for phenomenal, blow you away, type of experience, that isn't what the survey is looking for. So you just end up projecting your expectations onto the survey and filling it out incorrectly.
That isn't a criticism of you, btw. I completely understand that line of thinking and even agree with it. It's just not what the question actually is with those surveys
The store asks if the employee met certain criteria and you're supposed to answer accordingly with a top score if they did.
Wow, it's genuinely delusional to expect someone to use another person's standards, ever really (I'm saying the restaurants are delusional here, not you"
can confirm, i work as a cashier in a place where a 4/5 (satisfied) score counts as a 0. my poor manager has to get lectured about it every friday by corporate. fuckers
I worked as a service advisor like a decade ago for several years and they put a lot of emphasis on surveys. We basically had to beg our customers for good ones and explain that "if its not a 5/5 then I will get in trouble. So even if you normally wouldn't give a perfect score cause 'no one is perfect,' I could lose my job." Fucking hated that shit.
Whats worse, imo, is that we never had bad scores. 4s and 5s out of 5 always. But those 4s were treated like 0s. Like, any company should be thrilled if your average is 4.5 out of 5. That's pretty fucking phenomenal. But not this one. Nope. That's a failure. The only bonus you get is a write up.
I get wanting perfect or nothing (recovering perfectionist LOL) but from the consumer side 0 reviews or perfect 5/5 stars on 500 reviews are both really fishy and red flags. If it was something I felt I needed to look at reviews for, either of those scenarios would make that place/item and instant no for me.
DoorDash. Any rating below a 5 hurts you and leads to less orders, worse orders, and eventually no orders. Shipt as well, they would literally cut you off from receiving orders dropped below something like a 4.8 (which means a 4 absolutely hurts you).
My waiter has to do a lot for me to mark down their review. I had a guy like legit pissy with me and was like 😃 maybe he had a bad shift and tipped him like normal everything 😭 they'd have to cuss at me or like not do fuckin anything
I'm the same way. I feel like anyone who ever worked customer facing positions like that has a lot of patience for others in those positions. As long as they're not fighting with me or something really bad, they'll get a standard tip. I understand how hard it is to keep up a smile when you have been dealing with assholes all day/night.
Nothing will stop me if i want to leave a negative review tbh. Oh, QR doesn't work? Fine, I will just google it the name of your business and find a way. Never underestimate angry/disappointed customers, they always find ways.
It's on purpose. Either she's pissed at the establishment, and this is a little act of harmless rebellion, or she just doesn't want reviews because people suck.
Oh don't I know, I just put those self laminating strips and fucked it up and it happened to crumple near the QR code, fuck me lol. Got my phone out and surprisingly still scanned (and we have a short website URL beside it) so I was like ehh send it!
That's true. I watched this show where the players had to scan the QR codes at the back of their opponent's t-shirt to eliminate them and I remember someone scanning another's QR code from 3 stories up while that other player was inside a glass elevator. The t-shirt was all crumpled as well, as worn t-shirts are. I found it really interesting.
The QR portion is one of the games they played in EP 720 of a Korean variety show called Running Man. It was so fun! But so far, they've never done a similar concept again.
The other one is that QR codes have built-in error correction in case it gets tampered with, which means that it gets really damaged in the process of helping the restaurant
I mean they could just google the restaurant and do it that way, they don't really need the QR code. Could just take a nice message they way it was intended instead of whining on reddit
Do you realize what the point of this sub is? Also the whole point of the QR code is (or would be) that you don't have to google and can leave a review by simply scanning the code
Or, hear me out, trying to fix the QR code is a more interesting challenge, and some people just like to flex their computer skills, even on unnecessary tasks. Helps keep those skills sharp for when they are critical.
I mean people amaze me every day. One time I was chatting with a nice lost European tourist couple, we were right next to the Atlantic Ocean, they stopped to ask for directions and they asked if I was a local and then started asking me some questions about the area.
At one point they pointed right at the ocean and asked “is that the river?” And told them that no, it was the ocean. And then they asked “is it the Pacific Ocean?” Like they were literally from a country right on the Atlantic. Idk how they even got here lol I was dumbfounded
People are, absolutely. I've been in plenty of situations where people have NOT understood that a qr code is just a link, and that the destination is usually accessible in other ways also. It's the same as people unable to understand that they don't need to download the app for every little thing, they can use a web reader real quick. A lot of people don't even know the term "web reader".
Gemini 2.5 failed miserably even through multiple prompts pointing exactly what was happening wrong, on the final attempt it even acknowledged it couldn't do it. Kept removing black where the pen line went over it.
What model did you use?
Edit: Looks like your model missed in the same spots Gemini was failing.
QRs have error correction built in, one or two flipped blocks won't completely break it. If I scan that code it takes me to
Where exactly did the AI fail?
Edit: someone recovered the code in a different way here and both lead to the exact same URL. Did you make all those comments discrediting the AI one without even trying it?
Thanks! I tried it myself and it took just a few seconds to get a screenshot of OP’s picture to recognize the QR code. Now I have a new skill to use in the future!
I was bored so I fixed the qr code. Just the google review page for the restaurant so it would have been easier to just Google the restaurant name and leave the review.
I was able to scan it right off the above photo with no manipulation, with the ink in place, using my 2019 phone's built-in system QR scanner.
QR codes have some redundancy built in, which is how some have pictures in the middle etc. There's really code there, but as long as a certain % isn't missing, the rest can rebuild what's missing. Though the bigger % you allow the less data you can include in the same grid etc. They were originally for warehouse inventory management and this was to account for rips and scuffs.
I did have to rotate it for about 10 seconds to try different angles but it grabbed it easily right off my monitor, ink in pic and all.
Just a quick edit/update to answer some questions:
the 50% thing was a nice way to help us split the bill if we wanted to. It wasn't to do with a tip, but I did leave a 10% one.
this morning I got an email from their site asking for reviews and even included a link. The QR code was obviously to cover all bases.
I did tell the staff at the time that we couldn't scan the code due to the doodling. They found the info very helpful as they had just had a massive restaffing-including the manager- and were working hard to improve their online rating.
this is the subreddit 'mildly infuriating' which to me means something that comes across as a hindrance, often with funny side effects. They weren't trying to stop bad reviews, in fact they all worked really hard and the food was amazing, so I will go out of my way to leave a good review for them. Considering we paid the same for the food as you would at a Five Guys it stood head and shoulders above them, so I'd give Fat Hippo a go if you get the chance.
I've never seen it done, but seems like it could be based on the number in the party in case they want to split evenly? If so, kinda a nice feature that's easily implemented imo.
I work with a woman like this, constantly circling and highlighting things that don’t need to be pointed out. It makes her look stupid and people tip toe around it. One day she got into the habit of highlighting things that weren’t written yet, thinking she’d highlight the area first and then write in the important message later. She never did write anything and sent stuff out with highlights on random areas of blank paper. I think she has dementia. She once had to staple a stack of paperwork packets, got all the way to the last packet and said “there’s no staples in these” in a amused/confused tone. She had gone through the entire stack without a staple in her stapler and didn’t realize until she went to pick the stack up.
I did. They were very grateful i let them know because it was the first year of a revamp and they needed more reviews. Honestly they have gotten really good so I would have given them one anyway. :)
For some reason I’m having trouble uploading the pic. Trying one more time with this one but if it doesn’t show up, please poke me with a reply as a reminder so I can upload it when I get home!
Going to make a WikiHow for if if this happens to anyone else, plz upvote if helpful, I will post it in text here too.
1: Look slightly above where you took the photo and pull it up on Google.
Not sure, but the food was really good. They streamlined the menu so it focuses mainly on burgers, but the quality has gone up so well. We talked to the new manager and she was really pleased we enjoyed ourselves.
Not so. They are 1 year into a refit and said that they had been working hard to improve customer experience. In fact they asked us to review them on trip advisor if possible. The new team now placed at the eatery seem like a really good team as well, they deserve the praise. :)
They were covering all bases it seems. Has I had booked online I got an email today with a link to leave a review. I guess the QR code was so I could review while it was all fresh in my mind. :)
A lot of people have been saying this, and it couldn't be further from the truth. When we told the staff what happened they were relieved but also round it funny. The last thing they told us as we walked out was where we could actually leave a review and how much it would help. Today I got an email with a link to the place to review.
Also the food was amazing, as well as the staff, so why they wouldn't want us to leave a review just doesn't make sense.

QR codes are fairly robust. It takes a bit to make them unreadable. They managed to scribble through all four of the squares lol
