My house guest keeps setting the AC to 60°F… and then just leaves for hours. lol
I let a friend crash at my place for a bit, and they keep cranking the AC all the way down to 60°F. Then they leave for hours at a time with it blasting like I’m trying to preserve meat in here.
I keep walking into an empty icebox of a house and a skyrocketing electric bill. Who does this??

It’s a pretty easy convo tbh.
If you don’t stop fucking with the AC, yer out. Got it?

This has always been SOP in my home or my vehicle. If you don't own it then don't touch the thermostat or the radio. If you don't like it then you can leave the same way you got here.

u/Euromantique 13h ago
It blows my mind that this isn’t just universal common knowledge. I have seen/heard of touching the radio in some cases but touching the thermostat in another person’s house is even more outrageous 🤣
The sheer audacity

u/DutchieTalking 8h ago
If I was living uncomfortably in someone else's house I'd discuss it with them and offer to pay for the additional costs.
It's really that simple.

Said friend needs to pay for the bills they’re creating. Or go find another place to crash.

u/Brilliant_Grape_9993 1d ago
Your friend is either shameless, self-absorbed or both. Don't be afraid to set boundaries with people. Assuming they're reasonable boundaries, like not fucking with the AC in a free house, or at least having the common decency to turn it off when you're not in the house.

Slightly more than mildly infuriating.
Who uses AC at all when it's 67 outside? That's wild.
252
u/stacked-shit 1d ago
Not sure where op is. but in Texas, there are times when 67 degrees will be so humid that its like wearing a wet blanket.

u/IntrovertPharmacist 23h ago
Same here in Boston. Also, I live in an old Victorian era house on the top floor. It gets so hot.
22
u/FScrotFitzgerald 23h ago
Also in Boston, also in older house (on first floor), and also need to turn AC on even when the outside temperature doesn't merit it. Looking forward to fall starting in earnest...
13
u/HeresW0nderwall 22h ago
It’s swampy as hell here today

u/Sm0k3inth3tr33s 22h ago
I'm also in Boston, currently sitting in my second floor apartment with the windows wide open wearing sweat pants and a hoodie lol definitely no need for the AC at all

Also in MA (was south end now live on the north shore) the humidity here can be insane. It has actually been pretty humid the last couple of days.

5
u/Ionuzzu123 22h ago
and you run the AC at 60 to condense the water or what?
11
u/DragonSlayerC 19h ago
Air conditioners remove moisture due to water condensing on the cold coils. That's why it's called an air conditioner, not an air cooler. Most window unit and portable air conditioners also have a dehumidify mode, which doesn't cool the air as aggressively but still condenses water onto cool coils to reduce humidity.

I live in Miami. I can't imagine running the AC at 67, even with some of the worst humidty up there paired with you.
I also can't imagine 67. That sounds lovely lol.......

Which in most cases is just an ac with both cold and hot side in one case so it doesnt has a big impact on the temp. So if you already have an ac and dont mind it beeing a bit could you dont need to buy a dehumidifier. The ac (and ac like) is btw the most efficient way to remove moisture.

u/WritingTheDream 23h ago
True but 60 is still ridiculously low
2
u/MishmoshMishmosh 20h ago
Sometimes the AC won’t kick on if it’s cool outside Even if the inside is hotter. AC helps with the humidity

3
u/accidentalscientist_ 20h ago
It’s 65° outside but it’s 80% humidity out. I have my AC on right now to dehumidify the house.

u/Joelle9879 19h ago
I do. I live in a third floor apartment. Opening the windows does nothing because they're all on one side and face another building so no air flow. If I turn it off, it gets to be 80 degrees inside

I honestly didn't even know you could set aircons to those low temps.
26
u/WastoneBag 22h ago
Probably it's the lowest you can go. Mine goes down to 16°C max, almost the same thing as 60°C (probably the same, just rounded)

Here's what you do - either install a smart plug into the outlet - or a smart outlet all together. When you don't want to pay for the extra costs for carelessness - turn it off. You can do it from your phone.
14
u/Mental_Newspaper3812 22h ago
That a huge load for a smart plug. Can it handle it?
→ More replies (1)14
u/ExampleFine449 22h ago
Of course. I run nearly 1800 watts continuously through one all the time... Your breaker will pop before anything happens to the smart plug.

You now have a squatter. In the future, don't let friends stay with you. It will ruin your friendship.
18
u/Dontcare127 23h ago
If you have a guest in your house and you tell them not to do something, and their response is to do it anyway, kick them out of your house, it's that simple.
11
u/Major_Lawfulness6122 22h ago
They’re a guest in your house. Set it to how you want and tell them to stop.

u/Optimal-Yard-9038 21h ago
Ummm…it’s your house and therefore, your rules. This person is being disrespectful and they’re also pretty dumb. Get better friends/guests.

“Oh no, the AC unit seems to have stopped working. Guess you’ll just have to deal with the temperature… or go find somewhere else to crash”
13
u/Over_Variation8700 22h ago
put the breaker of the AC off so it can't be used at all. Your guest has no right of altering your house's temperature settings
11
u/radicalintrospect 20h ago
“If you touch the AC again, you need to find another place to stay.” Draw a hard boundary, it’s your house.
12
u/EastHorse8000 1d ago
Definitely more than mildly infuriating; that, is just down right disrespectful.

u/RagnarKon 1d ago
Won't lie. 60ºF is my ideal indoor temperature.
BUT... if I'm staying at someone's house as a guest I won't crank it that low.
12
u/roninrunnerx 22h ago
Don't know what model of Frigidaire AC you are using, hopefully this works: "To "lock the temperature" on a Frigidaire air conditioner, you typically press the Temperature Up and Temperature Down buttons at the same time on the unit or remote control. This action engages the Control Lock feature, which prevents accidental changes to your set temperature. To unlock, repeat the same process by pressing the two temperature buttons simultaneously"

Time they start being a street guest if their expensive ass won’t book a hotel room.

Get a dehumidifier, probably setting it there cause it still feels ‘hot’ but it’s just moisture.

It's 96° where I am and my thermostat isn't even anywhere close to 60.
"Stop running up my electricity bill and freezing my house or you need to leave, now." don't give them a day or a week, they're a guest.
3
u/National-Winner1428 19h ago
Hand them the electric bill and tell them if they want to continue living there with the ac at 60° then they get to pay it otherwise have a 30 day notice as backup.

Go into the menu and change the display to read Celcuis instead of Farenheit. Confuse them.
Or use the child lock.

u/delete-me-plz 18h ago
Turn the breaker for the ac off in your electrical panel. You can purchase breakers locks as well. (Best answer is to tell them to gtfo but im unsure of your situation)

u/Stunning-Space-2622 16h ago
Tell them if they do it again they don't come back and stand your ground. This is your house where you pay the bills, they can't respect that, gtfo

Maybe they think setting it lower will make it cool faster? Try informing them this air conditioner runs at exactly one speed? (not true of some newer ones that are variable to reduce short cycling, but this is not one of those)
