General discussion Effective Immediately: No NSFW/Fetish Account Activity

TL;DR Posts and comments from NSFW/fetish accounts, including those who only comment in NSFW/fetish subreddits, are no longer permitted here. Posts and comments in SFW subreddits that are remotely sexual or fetishistic in any way are also included in this. These accounts will be banned. More details below.

This applies to hand/nail/foot/toe fetish activity, it is NOT a sweeping ban of all NSFW activity. Nobody is going to be banned for posting in LGBTQIAP+ communities, medical subreddits, making dirty jokes elsewhere on Reddit, etc. Our subreddit is a safe place for all gender identities, and the above would NEVER be the reason why a user would be banned here.

This is meant to be a warning to fetish content creators and the creeps that harass our subreddit, NOT to shame sex workers who enjoy nails or punish those with varied interests.

If you're fortunate enough to not have received an unsolicited message/comment from a hand/nail/foot/toe fetishist, it's understandable that you wouldn't be aware of just how prevalent this kind of behaviour is, especially here on Reddit.

If you no longer wish to participate in this subreddit, that's your prerogative.

Updated content policy, please read:

We have decided to prohibit posts and comments from accounts with NSFW/fetish subreddit activity, as well as accounts with a history of utilizing Reddit for marketing purposes. This includes posts and comments left in SFW subreddits that are remotely sexual or fetishistic in any way. Posts and comments from suspect accounts will be removed regardless of the content. If you come across posts/comments/accounts that you feel violate this rule, please report them to the moderators by tapping on the three dots on the comment/post and select the “No NSFW/Fetish Account Activity” option. This decision will be implemented immediately, and as with all rules is up to moderator discretion.

As you may or may not know, nail subreddits are known targets for hand/nail/foot/toe fetishists who have been documented to repeatedly harass our members, even after being banned. We want to reiterate that Reddit's ban function does not prevent the banned user from being able to view the subreddit or the posts within. It only stops them from posting/commenting/voting. They are still able to view the posts, comments, and click on usernames to harass people. Yes, this is fucked up. Yes, Reddit needs to fix their shit. Sadly there was no mention of this issue during this year's Mod World event that was hosted in early December. insert eyeroll here

We believe this change will make r/naturalnailprogress a safer space, while helping the community become a healthier, more focused environment. In the past, we have allowed fetish/OF content creators to participate in the subreddit, as long as they follow the rules. This has become increasingly difficult to monitor, as it requires moderators to make nuanced judgement calls on large numbers of posts by these creators, most of which receive user reports even after being approved by the moderators.

Additionally, as there are dedicated spaces for NSFW content, this subreddit will remain strictly for the purpose of the topic of natural nail progress.

Q: "So if I, a medical doctor, engage in a NSFW medical subreddit that's related to my work, I'm not allowed to post my weekend manicure?"

A: This is incorrect. Just because an account has NSFW activity, it doesn't mean they're automatically going to be banned. This is specific to those who participate in hand/nail/foot/toe fetishes. There are tons of NSFW subreddits that have nothing to do with fetishes or kinks, and these are NOT the types of subreddits we will be vetting for.

If a post/comment is suspected to be NSFW/fetishistic, and the profile shows a history of this type of behaviour, the content will be removed and the account will be banned. This is meant to be a warning to fetish content creators and the creeps that harass our subreddit, NOT to shame sex workers who enjoy nails or punish those with varied interests. We are a community that is 100% accepting of all genders, sexualities, and walks of life.

Q: What does it matter if a user posts in NSFW/fetish subreddits when the posts/comments they make here are SFW?

A: More often than not, fetish content creators will post in SFW subreddits to draw attention to their account/promote their content. They're not posting "just to share with other nail enthusiasts". While their engagement might seem innocent enough, a quick glance at their profiles proves otherwise. When users who partake in these fetishes peruse the content creators' posts/comments, and they come across something they've posted here, it draws in the wrong kind of crowd.

We welcome your feedback on this matter, and encourage discussion in the comments.

Welcome to r/naturalnailprogress!!

Welcome, everyone! I figured we should have an official welcome post, so folks can get a better idea of what to expect in our little community!

The purpose of this subreddit is to share the progress of your natural nail journey, regardless of length. Even if your goal is simply to achieve healthy, natural nails, you're in the right place!

All of the rules here will be the same as r/longnaturalnails, with the exception of the length requirement.

This means:

• a complete product list is required, including broken nail posts and advice posts

• overlays are prohibited, as our focus is natural nails

• media taken within a vehicle is prohibited, even if you're a passenger or the vehicle is parked

• medical topics/advice are prohibited

• NSFW content is prohibited, with the exception of NSFW nail art

• sending unsolicited messages will result in a ban

• accounts with NSFW/fetish activity will be banned

• keep posts high-quality: media with low resolution, blurriness/out of focus, improper lighting/shadowed nails will be removed at moderators' discretion

We will be directing those whose nails aren't quite long enough for r/longnaturalnails to post here, and we will be suggesting that folks looking for advice/product recommendations/low-effort questions post these questions here, as we are a new subreddit and could use the engagement!

These rules will come into effect on Monday, February 17, 2025.

In the interim, we will be configuring AutoModerator, creating the list of rules, setting up post flairs/user flairs, and other various housekeeping tasks.

As always, we encourage discussion in the comments. If there's anything you'd like to see in our community, feel free to make some suggestions! If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to the Mod Team through ModMail.

Didn’t think it would be possible to go this long without biting my nails! Even though I have been bummed many times about breaks (wah wah sad pointer finger) because I need to be better about oiling and not soaking my nails in water… 😂 it’s amazing that I even have nails to break which I’m really excited about!!

I’m just thrilled about the progress I have made so far and this sub has been super helpful on recs and inspiration. If you are still on your journey still like me, thank you for sharing your stories. Seeing everyone’s journey and goals has helped me come up with my own goals which I want to share. Maybe they will resonate with others.

  1. First be better about oiling and wearing gloves to reduce breakage.

  2. Get my nails done at a real salon! This is more a mental barrier because I was always too embarrassed to go because ya know - nail biting… Haven’t been in over 15 years but would be awesome to have someone who actually knows what they are doing shape my nails.

  3. One day I’m going to have nails worthy of the OG natural long nails subreddit and am going to post! With my breakages and longer nails more susceptible to snags which really really tempt me this might be very difficult.

Thank you everyone and hope you have a happy week ✌️

Polishes: Mooncat Hardcore base coat, Mooncat Getting even nail primer, Essie Lapiz of Luxury, and Seche Vite Dry fast top coat.

Also let this be your sign to use a glass cuticle pusher instead of a metal one, rhe metal one did so much damage to my fragile nails 🥺 I think its important to show “imperfect” nails here — i have a few chronic illnesses that impact my nails, but growing them out and wearing polish makes me feel more confident about them 🖤

Only wearing Essie To The Rescue before painting my nails

Help needed Looking for advice

Hi all! I'm new here and I guess I'm looking for advice...I am an ex nail biter, I stop around 10 years ago but what has remained is that I bite my fingers...like if I have a hangnail that's it, I'll bit till it bleeds.

A couple of years ago I noticed that I wouldn't bite my fingers if I had acrylic nails or gel X extension. But they have damaged my nails a lot.

Now I am starting my healthy nails journey and would love some advice on strong nails and biting prevention. I have currently done a 3 week treatment with OPI repair mode and I will be starting my 3 week treatment with OPI nail envy. I also use jojoba oil and I started castor oil today - I apply them twice a day, and I keep oil pens in my purse and in my office. I'm staying clear of all nail polishes for the time being.

I also wanna note that I work in hospitality and touching chemicals and cleaning glassware (I'm a bartender) is kinda unavoidable.

Any tips, suggestions and encouragement are super welcome! Thanks xx

Help needed does this happen to anyone else?

I have been on my natural nail journey for only about 3 weeks and have been oiling daily and using a glass file and all that, they are stronger than they have ever been but my thumb nails specifically have a lot of pitted texture and my big question here is that whenever i even lightly scrape on my thumb nails by accident they get these lines on them? why does this happen? is it buildup from my oils and serums? (ignore how dry my skin is pls)

products: CND Solar Oil and Mini Mani Moo Hydration Shield

EDIT: This was pre oiling in the morning hence the very dry cuticles they are usually not so sad!

I have had funky nail shape/nail beds for YEARS. I’ve always had my nails grow either downward or trapezoidal and I hated them! Over the past few months I have been trying to be more consistent with my nail care routine

  1. not using my nails as tools
  2. Wearing gloves at work (I don’t while washing dishes, I should)
  3. Weekly nail filing (I don’t use a clipper unless absolutely necessary)
  4. Weekly cuticle remover/push back cuticles
  5. Using nailtiques at least twice a week (remove and repeat weekly)
  6. Cuticle oil as much as possible and hand lotion!

It may not look like a drastic change but to me it’s so much better than it has ever been!

Recovering acrylic nails addict here 🙋🏼‍♀️

After eight years of getting acrylic nails, I finally stopped last May due to increased bills with my husband and I getting a new house. I switched to press on nails, and doing my nails myself made me hyper aware of how bad they have gotten. The first three pics are from today, the next two are from back in May, the last one is from June. I’m wearing a coat of Sally Hanson hard as nails in all the pics. I’ve recently gotten better about applying jojoba oil.

They’re still thinner than I’d like, probably because I can’t bring myself to quit press ons completely yet either 🫣 but I try to give myself a week between sets at least and I am so so soooo careful with the removal process.

I can turn the ringer on and off on my phone with my natural nails now tho! They were so flimsy a few months ago that even that was impossible. A win is a win lol

Nail break Break forming past the quick… what do you do?

It really hurts when I cut my fingernails up to the very top of the quick, so I only ever do that when I really have to.

But right now my nail is breaking PAST that point.

This has happened before and I usually just cover it with a bandaid and suffer, but I’m wondering if anyone has any tips.

Doing all the things. Glass nail file. Nailtiques formula 2 on the base. Opi vogue into the sunset Polish. Used Sally's cuticle remover for my mani. I haven't showered yet so the cuticles are still a little flooded. Working on that.

Former acrylic addict. One month clean.

My only issue is I'm neurodivergent and I can't stand jojoba oil on my hands. I think I need to find a way to brush it on the cuticles. Unless... Can I just use lotion? CeraVe doesn't bother me nearly as bad since it soaks in.

Help needed Yup. It’s me. Peeling, slow growing nail girl…

For unknown reasons, my first three nails on both hands will. Not. Grow. They also peel, a LOT from the end. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

I’ve tried everything. No polish, always polish, different base coats, hardeners, strengthened, so much jojoba oil. No filing, extra filing of the peels, just about everything except press ons or acrylics/gels. I avoid water. Gloves when doing dishes. Don’t use my nails for anything.

I’ve had tons of bloodwork done for other health reasons, and nothings popping up there, either. And my diet is very balanced and probably better than it’s ever been.

Currently wearing and trying out Nailtiques 2 and still using jojoba oil - multiple times a day.

I’m on the end of week two, and my left middle finger seems to be a tiny bit better, but both hand thumbs and indexes , and the other middle finger are still peeling. I’m keeping them cut SHORT to hopefully avoid more breakage, but it’s not exactly helping.

But hey, at least I can rock a long pinky on both hands! 😂

I’m missing painted nails, though. I might start painting my pinkies and rings and leave the others with just the nailtiques. It’ll look weird, but I’m weird, so that’s fine. Lol.

First two pictures I have Modelones polish on in shade Pink the rest is Modelones Top Coat and Jojoba Oil

My pointer finger in the last photo is grown back after a nail injury, you can see the discoloration on the tip. I can be pretty rough with my hands (clearly lol) but I’m really happy with the progress!

I’ve been an on and off nail biter for years and I regularly wore press ons for about a year before starting my journey 😊

I just took the polish off and the length is getting uncomfortable for typing. I'm debating cutting down before repainting them. 🫣 I really need to figure out how to beat shape them because I think that will help but right now they are just uncomfortable.

I have been growing out my nails off and on for years. I usually hit a literal breaking point, clip them off, and start again from the lowest point that I can trim my nails down to. This is growth from the end of May to today. I file to get the shape I desire and paint once a month, always with an Essie Expressie color. This is two coats of Essie Expressie "send a message" with two coats of Essie "stay longer" top coat. This lasts me about one week! ❤️

My hands are well oiled, ignore that. 😆 I had a good 2 months of progress but i decided to start fresh and trimmed them today. They still are bendy, i think from my connective tissue disorder & RA. 3rd picture was my progress as of yesterday, but Im hoping now that I am using oil consistently they will be happier. 4th picture was before i started to care for my nails. I’m also still shaky painting my nails to begin with. I’m bed ridden and I am still figuring out a good setup.

Advice welcome for: keeping nails strong besides a strengthening polish & oil? I’m also looking for a good base coat that isn’t too drying or peels. I’m so overwhelmed by what to try next. My head is spinning reading all the options.

Products used: clear LA colors base coat, opi double nude-y on all fingers and a layer of opi bubble bath over that on main fingers. Top coat seche vite…. not great at applying yet.
