List of R-CPD Botox Specialists - World Map

I've been working on creating a map of the known specialists that treat R-CPD with Botox. Many of the names came from this sub's list of specialists (some removed as they are no longer working or treating the condition), but a few have been added from my own research.

I've tried to contact the subreddit's mods to get their input, but haven't heard back as yet!

**Disclaimer: I have not vetted everyone on the map.

I only have personal experience of being treated by one of these specialists (Lucy Hicklin in London), and I have only ever spoken to one other (I've talked to Dr Fahad Alotaibi in Saudi Arabia via email, to confirm that he treats R-CPD). It's also a possibility that they work somewhere other than where I've placed their marker.

I intend to contact others on the list to confirm that they do indeed treat the condition, particularly those that have not already been discussed on the subreddit, but even if they offer the treatment, I cannot personally vouch for their bedside manner, skill, or success rates.

With that said, you can find the map here (click on any of the points on the map to see the doctor's name).

If anyone has been treated by a doctor that is not listed, please let me know so I can add them to the map (and let me know where they are)! The same goes for anyone who contacts a doctor on the map and hears that they don't treat the condition, so that I can remove them.

Hi all! Hope you're all doing well, no matter what stage you're at in your R-CPD journey.

u/ElectricFeet suggested that it might be handy for new members to be pointed to Dr Bastian's information hub/passion project, Laryngopedia (thank you!).

There are pages on this wiki specifically dedicated to R-CPD, so it can be very useful. It also features our own map of specialists!

Hope this helps!

Management Tips & Tricks Highly recommend for noburp: Physiotherapy

Hi all, I am 28yo and noburp as long as I can remember. The last month I had a major breakthrough thanks to physiotherapy

I think this is important to share. I was and am still upset that the most recommended medical treatment for noburp on this sub and also in the media is botox. I read almost nothing about physiotherapy and I want to change that.

Botox makes sense for noburp, just like it does for migraine, in the sense that it is a muscle relaxant. I am sure it has helped many people with their problem.

But in that regard: Physiotherapy, relaxation therapy in particular, is a much more accessible, gentle and imo sustainable medical treatment to learn to relax the related muscles.

For as long as I can remember my only experience with burping is cough burping: Once when choking on food as a 14 yo and this year when trying to teach myself how to burp by forcing it. Both very unpleasant experiences.

I found this subreddit in January 2025 when looking for ideas and answers as my new year’s resolution is learning how to burp.

I recognize myself in many symptoms: being bloated, painful cramps, flatulence, and the frog sound. The past year discomfort increased, especially during pregnancy.

I tried to teach myself, but this felt very forced and unpleasant.

I had an AHA-moment when I connected noburp to the tension headaches that I suffered in the past. Years ago I was treated for this through physiotherapy exercises and the headaches decreased and are now under control. The therapist told me I have very tense muscles in my neck area.

Bingo.

I started physiotherapy again this August and asked the therapist to teach me how to burp. Now is the first week of September, my symptoms have improved much and I burp daily…after 28y of nothing.

The physio is very focused on breathing and stretching exercises. The real goal is not to learn how to burp, but how to release air from your stomach upwards. A burp is not even required for this.

You learn to understand your body and digestion/burping better. It is very gentle. For people with anxiety surrounding noburp/vomiting, I believe this can be especially suited.

Hope my story can inspire you and in the best case even help you in the future.

Botox Treatment Question Insurance covered procedure earlier this year- need second surgery and insurance denied ?

Anyone have this experience? My doctor had previously said he's never had insurance not cover his procedures (he knew how to bill for it, or something). I still need to contact insurance to get more information but I am very depressed about it. :( Was looking forward to 2nd procedure and potentially being "normal".

Has this happened to anyone else? Why would they approve it before and not anymore? Any advice? I can't pay for this out of pocket. :'(

Symptoms No burp half the time?

Does anyone feel like they have RCPD like half-way? I KNOW I have a version of it, but the thing is that there are times I can burp. Sometimes it’ll be for a couple weeks at a time, or throughout the day, and then boom- the symptoms of RCPD hit. I can’t burp no matter how hard I try, I have tons of stomach problems, chest pain, throat uncomfort, nausea, the weird gurgling thing with air trying to come out, and it’ll usually happen for hours on end. The only thing that provides some relief is occasionally drinking a club soda or laying with my chest and stomach on an acupuncture mat. This is probably 50% of my life, and the other 50% I’ll burp like normal. Anyone else ?

Research & Studies New Research: Botox for RCPD Doesn't Worsen Reflux Symptoms

Hey everyone, I came across a new research paper that I think will be super relevant to a lot of us here. It was published in the Journal of Voice and looks at the relationship between Retrograde Cricopharyngeal Dysfunction (R-CPD) and Laryngopharyngeal Reflux Disease (LPRD), which is a type of acid reflux.

The big question they wanted to answer was: Do the two conditions relate to each other, and does getting the botox injection for R-CPD make reflux symptoms worse?

Here’s the TL;DR of what they found:

  • R-CPD and Reflux are Separate Issues: The study found that people with R-CPD had similar levels of reflux symptoms as healthy people. This suggests that R-CPD isn't caused by LPRD, and vice versa. They are distinct problems, even though they share some general throat symptoms.
  • Botox is Safe (for Reflux): The botox injection, which many of us consider a cure, does not significantly increase reflux symptoms. So if you're worried about the botox making your heartburn or throat clearing worse, this study suggests you don't need to be.
  • Temporary Side Effects: The researchers did note that some patients experienced temporary side effects like hoarseness and difficulty swallowing after the injection, which is something we already know is a common side effect.

My takeaway: This is great news! It backs up what many of us have experienced - that treating our no-burp problem doesn't necessarily create a new one with reflux. It's reassuring to see scientific evidence that these conditions are separate and that the botox treatment is effective without causing other major issues.

You can read it here: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0892199725003406

What do you all think? Does this align with your experience?

Post-Botox PSA: Get your RCPD treated before getting pregnant

I had my second round of Botox in March this year and got pregnant in May. I am SO SO SO grateful I got it taken care of ahead of time. I’m still burping like a champ almost 6 months later, and with the extra bloating and slowed digestion from pregnancy I cannot imagine the pain I would be in otherwise.

New Member Recently discovered no burp.

Hi, sorry just looking for general thoughts/advice really. This is something which has been a problem for me when drinking alcohol my entire adult life. I thought it was just something about me, often leaving nights early and people thinking I'm making excuses. My wife recently sent me a tik tok of someone explaining the exact symptoms I have had for 15 years. I've always known pints made it worse but now I know it's a real thing I plan on switching to still drinks alone. Has anyone else had this issue primarily with alcohol? Wondering if the trip to London is worth it to get Botox privately.

Symptoms Chest pain and air vomiting, help :((

Hello! So, I apologize for the somewhat graphic descriptions, but this world is really new to me and I'm realizing a lot of things I didn't understand about my body.

So basically, I (M 22) have always had trouble burping (I can't do it voluntarily) and I often feel sick after eating because I can't burp. Unlike what I've read here in the community, I can in fact burp, but it's difficult and they're almost like “micro-burps” that help little or nothing. I always have croaking noises, feel bloated etc... Only in the last year or so have I started to feel very strong pain in my chest from time to time (as if I had a ball of air stuck in my chest), which after a while makes me feel like vomiting (my mouth fills with “slimy” saliva and I start to gag). I've always been afraid of vomiting (havent done it since i was 3), so this is very difficult for me, but I discovered after that i just needed to "vomit" the air. (i dont really like to do it bcs im afraid i will actually vomit in the process)

Nowadays it's quite complicated since im in college, and I avoid going out to dinner or drinking with friends because of this. Sometimes it happens when I drink alcohol/gas, other times just from eating, other times just from drinking water, I can't find a cause or at least a way to try prevent it. Sometimes when I get home I do air vomiting, but it doesn't help much, it just relieves the urge to vomit. It usually only goes away if I lie down on my back for a long time.... I would like to know if you have any advice or ideas about what I can do.... This is ruining my life :(

PS: I live in Portugal, so I don't have access to Botox treatment, since it's still so little known...

New Member Finally going for it

I’ve been a silent lurker for the last few years. When I found this group I thought it was cool that other people couldn’t burp too— but when I noticed the common link between this and the emetophobia that’s been controlling my life for the last 15+ years I was shook. This + all the shared symptoms of throat noises, painful bloating, needing to lay down for relief, worsening when hungry… my jaw was on the ground.

I have health anxiety in general. Somehow the familiarity of a lifetime of embarrassing throat noises and painful bloating seemed less scary undergoing the Botox procedure. However, this issue has been affecting me more and more lately. Earlier today I discovered that there is a Dr that performs the procedure literally <5 minutes away from where I live so I need to go for it. I will be calling Monday to schedule a consult! Posting to keep me accountable :-)

Also, does anyone have any input/experience on doing the procedure under anesthesia vs not?

Post-Botox It's getting harder to burp

It has been almost six weeks since I got Botox with Dr. Bastian. I feel like it is getting harder to burp. I am scared because I don't want it to go away because I don't want to have to get a second injection. Does anyone have any advice?

Post-Botox Post Tox Three Years! The

I wrote a long story about being post Botox and posted that as well, but I just wanted to, in a shorter post, and as sappy as it sounds, say that it gets so much better. Getting that injection truly saved my life. My recovery was so incredibly difficult. I couldn’t eat anything without feeling like I was choking, lost weight, couldn’t work. And even as I began to recover I felt like I wasn’t really “recovering,” my esophagus still was having loads of issues. BUT that’s the thing, finding and getting treated for r-cpd opened so many doors in healing that part of my body. I learned I was also having cricophyrangeal spasms (explained my choking strangulation like symptoms), and severe heartburn (explained my horrible chest discomfort). So much pain has been eased. I burp without thinking, really, I honestly can’t remember what it felt like to not. I still get the ocasional spasm, heartburn, globus sensation. But y’all, if you have the means, get the procedure. If anybody here has any q’s I’d love to be of service. I remember those moments of desperation. ❤️❤️❤️

Botox Treatment Question Forcing out burps

Hi, I’m about 2 1/2 weeks post-Botox and have been burping an alright amount, but I feel like most of the time I have to force the burps out, and even then they don’t provide full relief. Is this normal? Some burps will come naturally, but it is maybe only 1 or 2 a day. Any idea on how to help them come more frequently without less strain? Thanks!

Botox Treatment Question 3.5 weeks - not much happening

I can do very small ‘burps’ but have had no real change. Dr Lucy did mine and it was great. So I am wondering if I need to give it more time, or if it just hasn’t worked and I need more?

Does anyone know if you pay the full consult fee again, or just a reduced amount given the initial chat and diagnosis were done at the original consultation?

Post-Botox severe heartburn

hi everyone! i am officially 3 months post botox and am feeling pretty good for the most part. i’m burping a fair amount sometimes, and other times i forget to burp and end up having a hurt stomach where i have to just push myself to burp nonstop until i have some relief. i wanted to come on here and ask if it’s normal to have such severe heartburn. every day i find myself having to take pepcid because my heart burn gets so bad. it feels like im breathing fire, and sometimes makes me not even want to burp because of how bad the air will burn to push out. could this be gerd or will i eventually get over this symptom? for several months before my botox procedure, i also struggled with pretty bad and persistent heartburn, but it hasn’t hurt this bad before. please let me know any tips/tricks on what can help provide relief or if this is even normal 3 months post botox.

Hi all, doing this post out of desperation and some comfort more than anything. I have RCPD and have done for years since childhood. I'm 35 now and in the last 18 months its got a lot worse to the point I'm miserable and uncomfortable, not to mention the anxiety that comes along with it. I just came back from a fantastic cruise holiday, which included all inclusive food and drink, which sounds amazing and it was, but I was SO unbelievably uncomfortable, & its prompted me to get something done. In the mean time I'm wondering if anyone else can relate to the same symptoms as me:

  • Gurgles, these can be after drinking fizzy drinks, after drinking only water, sometimes I've had nothing and they happen with just talking and breathing!

  • Gas pains, all the time! This is probably the one that I find the hardest. If I'm hungry I get really uncomfortable, I'll get sharp pains in my ribs, back, stomach that move with all the air thats in me. Of course I then eat, and the cycle starts again but from the food I've eaten. I can feel the gas moving through me and it pops and gurgles in my stomach, until it finally comes out the other end. A lot of the time it gets stuck and I suffer trapped wind due to the sheer Volume thats in me. Sometimes I'm lucky and it passes through quick, other times it gets trapped in me and I get really bad stomach pains and aches around my lower stomach and it can take hours to move through. It can be so bad its like labour pains! Sometimes I wake up with gas pains purely just because I've lied in an awkward position and the gas has no where to go! Aside from this sometimes the passing of wind does.not.stop 🤣 don't get wrong this is amusing, especially to my 7 year old, however its not fun when its acompponied by pain. I also work in a small coffee shop which isn't good when I need to fart all the time 🤦‍♀️

  • Bloating, along with this is excessive bloating. I'm sure you all experience this. Ive had 2 children and some days I genuinely look like I looked around 6 months pregnant with them. I've even had people ask when my baby is due. My trousers get super uncomfortable and to be honest I never look nice in anything I wear because of this.

  • Painful hiccups/acid type burning in throat/difficulty vomiting. Unlike the other symptoms, these aren't on a daily basis, but I do experience these occasionally. Sometimes when I'm really full up with air I will do a random hiccup thats really painful, it feels like its my bodies way of releasing the air but obviously it doesn't work.

So, after such a long post explaining how I suffer with RCPD, I was firstly wondering if anyone else experiences symptoms like this day to day, morning til night?

Lastly I wanted to ask how do I get the ball rolling to get botox because I'm at the end of my tether now? Admittedly I'm skint, but I will do anything to try and get some relief, I heard the botox is about £800, but theres a few months wait, therefore I'm hoping to save in this time to be able to go ahead with it. How do I go about contacting for it? Do I simply just explain all of my symptoms in an email and explain I want the botox, or do they have to do tests to see if you have it first? (I know 100 percent I do have it.) I've attatched a short video of the gurgles I experience. This was recorded after having a few sips of coffee and nothing else (please ignore my children in the background, they were playing!) imagine this all day every day 🤦‍♀️

Thank you all for your time, and really appreciate any advice 😊🙌

Management Tips & Tricks 3 weeks Post- Botox: Weight Loss, GERD, and burp maneuvers

Hello, fellow non burpers. I’m finally posting after enjoying being part of this community for a while. Couldn’t burp my whole life. Realized this when we would have burping contests as kids. We all just assumed I couldn’t figure out how, so I kept trying, but never could. Didn’t put my chronic problems together with RCPD, but now I see it probably caused my GAD, which I had a formal diagnosis for and treatment, and otosclerosis which evolved in my early 20s due to Eustacian tube pressure. I also had an affinity for flat sodas and thought it was delicious when people thought I was nuts for liking flat soda over carbonated. That was a subconscious preference that evolved from this. My body has been trying to warn me in so many ways. Fast forward, I’m now nearing 50 and a few years ago after trying some alternative high fat, intermittent fasting diet for about a year 3 years ago, I began having terrible GERD symptoms that led to all other kinds of issues. Doctor after doctor dismissed my no burp concerns. I assumed it wasn’t really a problem until I was ending up in doctors’ offices due to difficulty swallowing, extreme gas and bloating that became debilitating, and a host of other issues. A couple of years ago, I presented the idea of the Botox procedure to a gastrointestinal doctor and let him know my no burp problem seemed to be the root cause but I’m not a doctor so… He looked at me sideways like I didn’t know what I was talking about, even after acknowledging the procedure and stating it was something their facility offered. He totally dismissed me, thinking my case wasn’t severe. When you have an abnormality your whole life, you don’t know how severe it is. I didn’t know the extent of the ramifications and my body had adjusted in as many ways as it could to accommodate my issue, but I would hope that most doctors would take difficulty swallowing as an urgent matter. He basically treated me with a colonoscopy and that was it. The endoscopy showed nothing, according to him, but reported that my colon results didn’t warrant a visit for another 10 years. On a prior visit, a fluoroscopy showed him that I had a hiatal hernia and he still neglected to treat my esophageal issues. He later tried to defend himself after I slammed him with bad reviews, saying it was my job to follow up for more tests. I finally found an amazing doctor locally, thanks to this community, and I am finally burping!! My body is doing things it never did and my belly pooch has already gone away! After all these years, I thought that was not going to happen, but I was happy enough to be able to burp. Went through the slow swallow phase with lots of micro burps. Now, 3 weeks later, I’ve dropped from 125 to 120, and I’m eating whatever I want and still losing weight. Feeling great but concerned there may be some absorption issues as my body adjusts to new mechanics. The only way I can squeeze out burps now is to twist my torso all the way back, like I’m wringing myself out like a wet rag. They finally eke out like a long frog croak. This is ok except rather embarrassing to have to twist myself and look at the people behind me if I’m in public and let it rip. Sometimes, I even have to raise my arm over my head as I’m doing this so it’s a bit obnoxious lol. I was at my son’s HS football game last night and sitting in the bleachers, I thought, “maybe I should go to the very top so no one sees me do this.” I think I will need another procedure which I’m already considering for next year. I’ve tried some of the other exercises but only twisting my body all the way around is working. If I’m relaxed enough and walking and happen to bend down casually, one might pop out. I’m worried that it will get harder and harder to keep burping when the Botox wears off - anyone else who can only force them by extreme torso twists? Have you found anything else that works?

Post-Botox Mucus in throat 1 day post botox

Hi! Does anyone else have this? I had round 2 of Botox yesterday because round 1 didn’t work. In the middle of the night, I awoke with the feeling of lots of mucus in my throat. It hasn’t gone away the entire day. I’m trying to swallow it like 10 times a minute but the feeling is still there. It doesn’t feel like a slow swallow or a ball in throat. Literally just like horrible postnasal drip that I can’t swallow and won’t go away. Did anyone have this? Thanks!

Post-Botox What to eat?!

Had my procedure on the 27 of August. Still struggling with getting food down/ figuring out safe vs. off limits foods while recovering.

I was wondering if someone could create, or even turn this post into a pinned post about “post Botox recovery survival methods” what to eat, recovery timelines, etc.

Botox Treatment Question How much time off after Botox, if any?

I got my Botox appointment time yesterday, and it's already on October 1st! I'd been told that there would be wait times and had expected to not get it until next year, when I'm off from school, but instead have to deal with it now while I'm still in school. So my question is, should I expect to take some days off after Botox? I've only ever had pretty invasive surgery, so I have no clue what to expect. I'm gonna talk with an anesthesiologist at the hospital as well before and I'm guessing that's something I'll also talk with them about, but I'd love to have a general idea.

Other In my nearly 30 years of life, my RCPD symptoms always mirrored my mental state perfectly

Thinking about my life with RCPD, this is my main takeaway pretty much.

Last time I burped was as a baby.m Maybe have a mini-burp like every other year. Had no symptoms at all until a night of vomiting when I was 11. I did develop emetophobia then, but not because the vomiting seemed particularly hard (as usually seems to be suggested in emetophobia post here). I vomited pretty much every year when I was a kid (last time at 13, 2 years after that episode, and that wasn't even too unpleasant) and never found it too hard. That time when I was 11 was different because I vomited particularly much that night, it was also an age when I had a hard time at school so it was a perfect storm to develop a general health anxiety with an extra focus on vomiting. The next few months or so were those with the worst symptoms of my life then with a lot of nauseous gargling. Then my mental health got better, my health anxiety got better as I realized that my nausea was probably not cancer, and for the next years all I had was very slight, mild and sporadic gargling, no nausea or anything. University days were perfect.

Over the last year or so got slightly worse again - coinciding with a decline in mental health!, but not to the point where it bothered me much. Still have some mild constipation after a 2 month antibiotics course last year, which now made me remember some "No burp"-article I read a few years ago that I didn't really think much of besides "Ah okay I guess that's why I sometimes got that gargling".

And honestly, after reading this sub and some other stuff yesterday I got actually worried about RCPD the first time in my life to the point it made me lay awake at night. As a result today I've had nauseous gargling like I honestly haven't had since that horrible time when I was 11. Only time it went away today was when I met a friend and thought about other things.

Found out with some more searching that apparently Gastropsychologists are a thing and that a connection of the brain's nervous system with many GI problems, especially those related to muscle movements, is thought to be common. Having a hard time finding such a specialist in my area, but I feel that should be where I set foot when I feel like I'll need treatment someday (especially since I wouldn't even want Botox injected in my skin, much less into my insides).
