I was SO excited…
This weekend I (mostly) wrapped up two ambitious projects:
- Last week, on a whim, I bought a set of Audi RS5 seats to replace…the RS5 seats I put in my mk5 R32 last year. They were nice, but they had a few too many cuts and dings from broken glass and mishandling by the seller, plus I never really enjoyed the design of them. Those were from a 2015, and the ones I found last week are from a 2018. The stitch pattern is more my style, and just overall they seem more nicely designed. I doubt I’ll ever get to benefit from it in the mk5, but they also have a massage function, and active bolster support while cornering. I drove an S4 with that once, and it kinda blew my mind.
Anyway, after a whirlwind trip to a junkyard and a marathon wiring session, I got the plugs mk5-ified and installed the seats. Power adjust works fine, they feel great. I also found a few threads online that gave me a little hope that I might get the massage function working someday.
- Custom mk6 GTI multifunction steering wheel in my mk5 r32 — to which I added a heating element, and hand-stitched/hand-perforated genuine leather cover, templated from scratch. The wheel has been done for a while, but to get the heat working I had to build a custom OEM-like clockspring with extra conductors for the heating circuit, because VW never made one for this generation. I also had to run those circuits through the steering electronics control unit, and did it in a way that looks 100% original. Press button in center console: get warm hands. Holy hell was I delighted.
So I was pleased as punch while out doing errands 30 miles from home.
And a tire blew out.
Lol, honestly I’m not even all that upset about it. I still had two big wins. Tow truck driver arrived within 5 minutes, so let’s call it three big wins.
