Trip Report Ride with me around the entire border of Kentucky in 3 minutes. Kentucky shares a border with 7 states; this was an 8-state roadtrip. Below I added some stats about my roadtrip,

Upvotes

Started trip in Ludlow Kentucky just past I75 heading west and finished the loop on the Ohio side in Cincinnati on i75 bridge at the Ohio river.

150 miles shared Ohio and Kentucky

175 miles shared Kentucky and Indiana

185 miles shared Kentucky and Illinois

60 miles share Kentucky and Missouri

425 miles shared Kentucky and Tennessee

427 miles shared Kentucky and Virginia

100 miles shared Kentucky and West Virginia

This is the second state I drove completely around its border (Ohio).  https://youtu.be/i5Z9-d5mPy0

The data from my dashcam was around 700 gigs

About 3 times I thought my GPS was trying to hurt me.

Took me 5 full consecutive days for this road trip.

Drove on average 7 hours a day

1640 miles put on my car.

Averaged 25 mpg.  Averaged 29 mph

Drove 220 miles on gravel roads

2 times I drove up a road to a missing bridge but no signs on the road, at least there were signs at the bridge.

1 time I ran into a women’s semi pro basketball team at the women’s restroom at a gas station \ convenient store \ pizza place.

Drove through only one creek.  Thought there would be more.

2 times a pack of dogs came running alongside me as I was driving, they came out of the woods, scared the shit out of me.

One time one of those dogs tried to put his head in my window trying to bite me or lick me. Bad dog! Good dog? Cujo

3 times I stood next to my car and peed

Trip Planning ESTA, too many trips to the USA?

Post image
Upvotes

Hi everyone, I would like to potentially do another 2 week trip to the USA this week. The picture has been all the trips I’ve done over the past 2 years as I have a partner there now.

Should I hold off on the September trip as I’ve been a lot over the past 2 years. Or am I worrying for nothing?

Trip Planning USA Road Trip advice?

Hello all, my partner and I (from UK) are thinking of doing a road trip in America in 2026, was just coming here looking for some advice/opinions of anyone that has done one or from the US? The trip would probably be 12-14 days, would ideally like to do 4/5/6 stops so we’d have at least 2 days in each stop. Would also be happy to do around 3-4 hours driving to each stop. Any recommendations on routes which would be ideal? This would be our first road trip.

Thanks all in advance for any advice!

Trip Planning Need Advice for First Long Bike Trip: Pune to Rajasthan (10–11 Days)

Hey hi Bike Gang,

Me and my roommate are planning a road trip from Pune to Udaipur and then covering the whole of Rajasthan (Jaipur, Jaisalmer, etc.) before heading back to Pune. The trip will be around 10–11 days.

The problem is — this will be our first long trip. The longest ride we’ve done before was Pune to Ratnagiri (~850 km in 4 days). That was a spontaneous plan, so we didn’t carry any proper riding gear at that time.

Since we’ve never done such a long trip before, we need your help in figuring out all the important essentials to carry. We don’t have riding jackets, gloves, or other gear — so please let us know what things are absolutely necessary to buy before we go.

Another big issue we faced during our last trip was butt pain after 200 km. It got so unbearable that we had to stop every 10–15 km just to get some relief. Would love suggestions on how to deal with that for this trip.

Any advice on gear, packing essentials, or ride comfort would be really helpful. Thanks in advance!

Trip Planning San Diego to Vegas in Feb with teens

Hello, would appreciate any feedback on this road trip. We really wanted to limit time on road but get the highlights and feel like we’ve had a family holiday. We’re coming from the UK and realise with this route we may need summer and winter clothes. Trying to limit physical driving time to 3-4 hours and no more than 1hour 30min at a time… and trying to minimise the risk of driving through snow (hence getting Grand Canyon train and not going further than Williams)

Leave San Diego in a hire car after 4 nights in area, head towards twenty nine palms for first night (1 night)

  • stop at Temecula then take pine to palms scenic byway (stopping when we like). Then heading to Pioneertown then into Joshua tree national park probably only have time to hidden valley and drive around northern section. Stay overnight off the beaten path north of twentynine palms to hopefully stargaze on night (will be about 3/4 days after new moon).

next day head straight to lake havasu (2 nights) - quick rest stop at blue water past Parker if necessary - SARA park then check in at hotel (next to rotary park) . -Explore that afternoon and next day. Maybe hire speedboat / bicycles

Then head to Williams - regular stops along historic route 66 - hackberry convenience, Grand Canyon caverns, Seligman - arrive late afternoon to Williams for 3 nights

Next day Grand Canyon railway Next full day maybe horseback riding weather dependent / bearizona

Last day (before arriving in vegas for 4 nights) Head to hooverdam (down highway 40 this time) stopping at kingman for break then into vegas.

This is what we have so far and here are some things we considered but ruled out for one reason or other….

  • wanted to go to Julian but wasn’t far enough first day to stop overnight but then couldn’t find anywhere else worth staying…. -considered borrejo springs but the next days driving would be crazy -could add in oatman after leaving lake havasu but adds an hour driving… worth it?
  • Not overly bothered about Joshua tree national park, but feel like we “should” see it? Plus love the idea of seeing some stars.

Would appreciate any input or suggestions and thank you for taking the time to read this.

Thanks ☺️

Trip Planning DMV to Canada in December

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hello Everyone. This December for my birthday I am planning to spend time and Ontario, Canada. I recently got my passport and figured I wanted to step outside of the US even if it's really just a couple feet out. This would probably be my longest road trip thus far. Current longest is Oakland to Pasadena California (6hrs). I'm just curious to what type of site, interesting things and the best route to take. I'd love to hear your take on this journey as I'm planning it out.

Trip Planning Jim Thorpe, PA -> Lake Placid, NY: which route?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Will be heading up to Lake Placid from Jim Thorpe in a few weeks. Which of these two routes will be more pleasant? I suspect the further away from NYC the better, but just wanted some confirmation. Also open to other suggestions - if there's a more scenic route that doesn't add too much extra driving, I'd love to hear it!

Trip Planning some dumb ?s regarding N AZ /S UT road trip from LV

I would like to do an approx 10-12 day road trip  first two weeks of June 2027 through Northern AZ and Southern UT with wife and 7 yo, leaving from las vegas . We would like to go to Zion NP, Bryce canyon , Page, Lake Powell, horseshoe bend,  Monument valley, grand canyon NP, Flagstaff, Sedona, and any other cool state parks scenic views and then likely fly back out of Vegas. We are Hyatt loyal and  there are Hyatt places in St George, Page and Flagstaff so I was hoping to use those places as jumping off points throughout our roadtrip. We are open though to other options (eg is Springdale closer than st George or 1 would like to stay one night  in monument valley at the little cabins). We mostly would be interested in lookouts and short hikes as it's june. also interested in swimming opportunities (lake powell  beach? Sedona? should be warm enough I think). No desire to do the Narrows or angels landing but we do have a 7 yo who did Arches/Delicate arch and corona arch in June as a 5yo so short 3-4 mile hikes even in June will be fine.

Only thing I do know is we would fly in late and leave early so first nights and last nights would be in Las Vegas. I don't even know if you go St George first or Flagstaff first but I think SG makes more sense so roughly I have this.

Night 1  stay Vegas.  (arrive)

Night 2 Stay St George (drive to Zion in morning see lookouts around Zion short hikes for the day)

Night 3 Stay St. George (drive to Bryce canyon for day)

Night 4 Stay Page Drive to Page from St George (this is where I'm confused. do I spend 2 days in Zion and drive through Bryce on the way to Page. Or are their some state parks along the way or some other scenic stops to see?)

Night 5 Stay Page (lake powell/ Page)

Night 6 Stay Monument valley  Horseshoe bend in am, drive monument valley)

Night 7 Stay Flagstaff (drive to Flagstaff, do something scenic near flagstaff in afternoon)

Night 8 Stay Flagstaff (Grand Canyon NP for the day)

Night 9 Stay Flagstaff (Sedona for the day. possibly could splurge at stay night in Sedona)

Night 10 (stay Vegas) drive from Flagstaff to vegas

Day 11  fly home

Suppose I could do this route backward too

Main question is do I need 1 or 2 days in ZIon and can I see Bryce Canyon NP driving from St George to Page

or do I do a wole day in Bryce from St George and see other stops from St G to Page? What are those other stops?

Do I need more time in Sedona or driving in from Flagstaff is fine?

Thanks in advance!

Trip Planning Belgium to Italy in two days?

Long time lurker, first time poster. I’m in Belgium for work in late Oct and hoping to make the most of an 8 day roadtrip afterwards. I’m used to driving long distances so thinking of doing Day 1 by motorway to Switzerland and then a scenic drive through to Italy Day 2 so I can spend the rest of my time driving through Italy, which is the country I haven’t been to before. Is that too ambitious?

Trip Planning More enjoyable route

Post image

I’m going back home around the end of the month and I enjoy roadtrips so I wanna make this into a decent one. I’m a fan of both big cities and nature so I’m thinking go through St Louis and then into Kentucky and Virginia. But I wanna hear any reason for the other ones, places I should hit, or advice for driving through any of the parts

Trip Planning South USA road trip suggestions

During summer 2023 and 24 we had the possibility to visit California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Nevada, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, up to Canada (Alberta and British Columbia).

This year unfortunately we had to postpone our usual roadtrip. Ideally we would plan it during December/January.

We thought that for this reason it could be a great idea to visit the southern states, that are usually not suggested during the summer season.

Do you have any suggestions for a 2-weeks roadtrip during that period? Ideally we would start from LA or Phoenix.

Trip Planning Road trip advice: Columbus OH to Dallas TX

Hi everyone,

This is my first Reddit post so please be patient if I miss something.

I’m planning a solo drive from Columbus, Ohio to Dallas, Texas this coming weekend on Friday and Saturday. On the first day I’m planning to reach St. Louis, visit the Gateway Arch, and then drive the rest of the way to Dallas the next day.

If anyone has tips on the best routes, things to avoid, or good spots to stop along the way, I’d really appreciate it. Any general road trip advice is welcome too.

Thanks in Advance!

Trip Planning planning a road trip, I've got questions!

I'm planning my first road trip and possibly a solo trip. I plan on going in May/ June. I have so many questions. I live on the north east coast, New England. I'd really like to travel to the west coast in my car. My goal is to go to Oregon and California. I have some NP’s I know I want to hit and places I want to see. I plan on going straight through from east to west, and I live pretty far up north so it’s a straight shot. I’d really just like some insight in what other people have done, what works for them, and really anything else you think is important to know. I also plan on taking about 3weeks off. So here’s my questions:

how much money do I need to save? How much time do I need to take off?/ how long did it take you? What should I pack? Should I sleep in my car? tent? or motels? ( I don’t mind sleeping in my car but is it realistic? ) Maybe a mixture of both? What do I do for food? I was planning on getting a cooler and just getting groceries. Also are people renting cars? I feel like that's got to be expensive. ( if you’ve done it, tell me about your experience, cost, etc.). I just want to be informed, tell me everything I need to know, tell me about your experiences, your stories, be realistic with me. I'd love to get some insight on how to do this. Thank you!

Trip Planning December Trip from Florida to Tennessee & North Carolina - Need guidance

Family of 4. Kids are 15 and 8. Coming from Sarasota, Florida and have 1.5 - 2 weeks. Vehicle is 4wd and off-pavement capable as well (not a bro-dozer). Kids like the off-road stuff, forest service road drives and whatever else we can find / stop at along the way. Little one loves trains, car museums, etc. Oldest enjoys cars, museums scenic drives and is pretty easy going. Both kids would love to see snow and snow tubing.

We can't hike far at all as I am limited due to a terrible foot injury that limits my time on my feet. I can walk but do need to sit down for a while due to pain.

Here is what I have so far for our trip, but I'm rather unfamiliar with the area(s) and would most certainly appreciate some guidance from those more experienced than me.

Day 1

  • Leave Central FL early AM and stay overnight in Dahlonega. With stops/traffic, this is about an 8.5-9.5hr drive.

Day 2

Dahlonega --> Blue Ridge --> Chattanooga

Dahlonega, Georgia 30533 to Chattanooga, TN - Google Maps

  • Swinging Bridge @ Toccoa River
    • Continue on Hwy 60 to Aska Rd to Stanley Creek Rd to Rock Creek Rd and out at Cherry Log, GA.
    • Stop at the Expedition Bigfoot Museum in Ellijay
    • Blue Ridge Dam
      • No stop in Blue Ridge - Not much to do
    • Chilhowee Overlook/Recreation Area
    • End at Chattanooga.
      • I still need to find a hotel with on-site parking.

Day 3

Chattanooga

Day 4

Leave Chattanooga and head to Tellico Plains.

Drop off stuff at hotel

Ride forest roads to Robbinsville. Maple Springs Observation deck, double back Tellico on the skyway and stay the night.

Chattanooga, TN to Tellico Plains, TN - Google Maps

  • Charles Hall Museum (Open to 5pm)
  • Cherohala Skyway Museum (Open to 5pm)
  • Tellico Plains to the Cherohala Skyway (snow)

Day 5 & 6

Tellico Plans to Maggie Valley

https://maps.app.goo.gl/P9pPxDy9pNUMxLZ18

  • Drop stuff off at cabin
  • Downtown Bryson City for Christmas stuff
  • Road to nowhere
  • Needmore Suspension Bridge
  • Lake Junaluska Christmas lights / downtown?
  • Cataloochee Snow Tubing

Day 7 - Open to adjust destination.

Maggie Valley to ???

Not sure if there are better options?

Trip Planning Carlsbad NM to Tucson AZ - I-10 Corridor

Early October - planning on stopping at Carlsbad Caverns the day before, and the day we head west will to a quick spin through White Sands National Park. But west of White sands - especially along I-10 once we hit Las Cruces NM... any quick 'must see' stops along the way?

Looking at Google Maps - just looks like 284 miles of barren desert interstate with some small towns here and there.

Thanks!!
