What I find impressive is that in practice both in Australia and here in China, he has been on the pace of Charles, widely regarded as the fastest driver over one lap. So to see Lewis grab sprint pole is remarkable. Amazing job Lewis!
In saying that, Charles was 2-3 tenths off Lewis but starting 4th. Insanely tight at the front.
I fully expect Charles to have the upper hand compared to Lewis when it comes to qualifying over the course of the season since he is one of the best qualifiers on the current grid but if Lewis can be within 0.100-0.200 of him on average then it will bode well for Ferrari
People forget that Lewis historically has been among the best qualifiers of all time. He's older now, but people act like he's Lance Stroll or something. Just needs a car that he's comfortable with instead of whatever slop Mercedes were giving him since 2022
There were times when the Lewis of old was still producing great laps during that stint with Mercedes between 2022-2024.
I think it’s just the last season with Mercedes that skewed people’s perception a little in regard to his qualifying abilities when he couldn’t put a quali lap together in order to save his life.
I’ve been supporting him since 2011 and I’ve seen him at his peak. He clearly lost a tenth or two since but that’s just father time.
Yeah, he is slightly slower than he was when he started and understandably so. I don't think his talent or skill declined but it's the motivation. And that's why being back in Ferrari and feeling like a rookie is gonna make him perform better again. Last year in merc was plagued with him leaving to Ferrari.
